Splitting Heirs (Empire State of Mind Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 444 ratings

A dead-end career. A love life that’s DOA. When fate sends her on a wild goose chase, can she land the deal of a lifetime?

Struggling realtor Lauren Bent is desperate for a break. If she can’t close a deal soon, she’ll need more than her million-dollar dreams to pay her bills. But abandoning her chosen career is even harder than landing a sale.

When her wealthy great-aunt passes away, Lauren has a chance to turn everything around. To inherit the fortune, she must compete against her eccentric family in a contest. Between scheming relatives, accidentally setting fire to a client’s apartment, and a poodle mistaking her for a hydrant, winning seems like a long shot. And then she comes face-to-face with Johnny, her attractive high school nemesis. With him judging the tournament, her odds of surviving the competition sink lower than her sales numbers.

Lauren has every reason to walk away from it all. But something about Johnny—and her great-aunt’s mission—keeps drawing her back into the fray. Will her quest for success reward her with a prize beyond her wildest dreams?

Splitting Heirs is the lighthearted first book in the Empire State of Mind chick lit series. If you like laugh-out-loud humor, relationship drama, and zany characters, then this fast-paced story is for you.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Quite possibly one of the best chick lits I've read by a mile." ★★★★★ A Quintillion Words

"Gorgeous read. Highly deserving of hundreds of stars."
★★★★★ Little Miss Book Lover 87

"Splitting Heirs by Diane Michaels is a funny but, in places, bittersweet story about life. It's really well-written, pulling you into the story right from the start and taking you on a journey of ups and downs, of fun and heartbreak; a story of decisions and choices. The characters are amazing, real people that you can really relate to and identify with in a fast-paced story with a few twists and turns to keep you on your toes. We all have dreams of what we want in life but few of us achieve them; Diane has written a story that anyone of us could be living right now, a real-life story with real-life issues. Great story, I really enjoyed reading it."

This book was like a great romantic comedy movie ... even when you’re pretty sure who will end up with whom, the story is still surprising in so many ways! The author deftly juggles a large, complicated family, while infusing the characters with realism and heart and wit. Also I loved the way it describes the whole gamut of NYC real estate. Can’t wait for the next book to come out!

I very much enjoyed this book. I have read several of Diane Michaels’ books, and enjoy her breezy style of writing. I particularly like that she can transport me fully into many different worlds - musician, artist, real estate lady and more.
In Splitting Heirs, I could definitely identify with the family interactions; sibling rivalries, family grudges, vying for approval, and trying to make your own way with and despite family support/judgements. Lauren goes through several self transformations which are completely recognizable in my own ‘I think I’ll do better if I try to do this differently’ kind of way.
The rush of new love, as well as despair with fighting with the ones we love, is well captured.
I’m glad the author mentions the current global situation in the end notes, because that was running around in my head while reading. ‘Social distancing!’ I kept shouting in my head. Ms Michaels called it a love letter to NYC - and I love that.

While I've only been to New York City three or four times, I know the struggle four suitable housing is real ... And not just in NYC. To work such a social justice issue into a romance takes great writing. Well worth the read.

I felt like I was in NYC again. It was certainly a more likable character than some of beleaguered Lauren’s relatives. I enjoyed Lauren’s growth and her coming to understand what a natural fit she was for Aunt Donna‘a legacy. Looking forward to Emma’s story …

Lauren Piccolo has real estate running through her veins. Daughter of agents, she is also the great-niece of one of Manhattan's most successful and compassionate real estate moguls. When that great aunt (Dorothy) dies suddenly, the family is thrown into a quest. The prize? Aunt Dorothy's millions. Along the way, the true nature of family members is revealed.
This is an excellent book that gently leads us through the lives of the Piccolo family and helps us learn about a whole life Aunt Dorothy lived without her family's support or knowledge.
Interesting characters and realistic descriptions make this a delightful book to read.
    I loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and original romantic fiction!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 28, 2020
This is an original and well written novel, which I have really enjoyed.

The plot is original as it follows two life changing events in Lauren's life and explores the impact of them on her mental and emotional wellbeing. The first is meeting (or re-meeting) Johnny, and the second is the death of her beloved but somewhat neglected great aunt Donna.

The two plot points are intertwined perfectly and serve the reader well as it helps us to really get to know Lauren and see her develop as a character. I could really identify with her as she grew through the book and ended up on a completely different trajectory and life path than we first thought.

Though dealing with the somewhat serious issues of love & death, the tone and style of the writing is lighthearted and there are lots of funny moments in the book.

This has been an entertaining and thought provoking read as it's left me feeling totally empathetic towards Lauren and wondering what I would do in her shoes.

Undoubtedly a five star read and a must buy for fans of fun, original romantic fiction!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great if you love New York!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 29, 2021
Just spotted this advertised on Kindle and thought I'd give it a try. Very chick lit, which wasn't really a surprise judging by the cover and blurb. However, I'm a Brit who loves New York, and that was what sold it to me. The story itself, whilst well-written, is very far-fetched and a bit tedious at times with the "will they/won.t they" romance, but it was a bit of light-hearted fun, tho I don't think I'll be reading any more of Ms Michaels' books. However, if you really enjoy chick lit with a bit of comedy, then you may well enjoy this particular novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Argh, this book!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 23, 2020
Quite possibly one of the best chick lits I’ve read by a mile. It’s filled with wonderful characters, a very engaging plot and is just the perfect book for a quiet night in. I guess we’re all having a lot of those right now!

A perfect balance of humour and intrigue hit me from the very first page. You know that feeling you get when you don’t even have to read much to know that a book will be truly fabulous? That was exactly what I experienced here, and the pages that followed were just as witty and wonderful. Lauren is such a likeable character and is a real dreamer – in fact, she dreams big, especially where her career is concerned. It was very refreshing seeing a female main character with ambition and determination, and it was really rather contagious.

I enjoyed the book so much – from the hunt to find Aunt Donna’s perfect heir to understanding more about the importance of family, friendship and love, this story simply had everything I’d hoped, and more. The author’s humour, attention to detail and unique way of portraying her characters made this book so special, and I have no doubt in my mind that the next book in the series will impress just as much! A very worthy five stars – I definitely recommend this one for lovers of chick lit and a good old rom com.
