Scotland, 1800

Isobel Ritchie is about to marry money to save her family from ruin. She spends one of her last days of freedom in Caerlaverock Castle where - tempted by a beautiful sunset - she strips off her conventional gown and dances alone, high on the battlements.

Major Robert Anstruther is back home in the Scottish borders to recover from his wounds. He is eager to get back to active service against Napoleon, but he's not yet fit enough. So, frustrated and restless, he makes another trip to his favourite place - Caerlaverock - at his favourite time of the day - twilight. He loves the old ruins for their fairytale atmosphere, though he's never seen any fairies there.
