Stars of Ice and Shadow: Book One (The Gaellean Prophecy 1) Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 34 ratings

He took an oath to kill...

...but prophecies don't die.

Godwin is many things. Demon-slayer. Assassin. Star-cursed.

But he's no traitor. That is, until the Sages put him in an impossible situation.

After being assigned to slay an unlikely target, he embarks on a quest to find answers--and he'll take on every demon in Gaellos until he gets them.

The only problem is there's more than demons in his way.

The Empire is out for a second chance to conquer his home. The shifting of the stars heralds new magic--some of which is very suitable to things better left in the dark.

And when a prophecy as old as the gods unfolds, Godwin learns what's truly important to him--and what he'll have to sacrifice to protect it.

You'll love the first book of this epic, dark fantasy series because swords will dance and nations will tremble.

Author of Dark Epic Fantasy and known cat dad.

I write books about ordinary people who become extraordinary when the times demand it. If you want to experience midnight assassinations carried out with magic rune-blades, demonic rituals conducted by regular folks who took a wrong turn in life, and men and women who use sorcery to shatter armies, then you're in the right place.

Court politics, medieval factions, wars with swords and wars with words... you'll find all of that and more in my books. Come on in. The water's swell!

This book is amazing! C.S.Vass has built a truly unique world. The diverse range of characters and how they interact with each other is marvelous. There is so much action, adventure and raw emotion that you can't put this book down. Just when you think you know how the story is going there are unexpected twists you turns you didn't see coming to keep you on the edge of your seat. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I very highly recommend this book .

Though I don't like half a book given to world building as some books do, a little more in this story would have been helpful. I would have liked a map to at least give me a general idea of the land. A few grammar mistakes, but not bad. That said, I enjoyed the book, beginning to get to know the characters. Though they do need to be fleshed out more. hope that happens in the next book, which I just ordered. Looking forward to reading more from this author.

Interesting read and storyline while treachery and espionage intertwine with the prophecy as evil fights within the kingdom and across the land and seas.

“It’s the Odruri. Godwin of Brentos. The Darksword!”

"He was only a boy in his teens. His hair was black as jet and tied in a short braid that fell to his neck. His silver eyes surprised Gregory, but not for their unusual color. They were narrowed in a rage unlike any he had seen. They were the eyes of a killer. A murderer’s eyes." - Gregory

"Can they not see it? The murder in those eyes. Those evil eyes that glow like twin moonstones in the darkness. Do they not know that their fate is written in those eyes? Run. Hide. You cannot win."

Godwin is an assassin. A Shigata. Stone cold, emotionless; deadlier and swifter than any viper. He lives to uphold his vow to complete any and all contracts given to him by the Sages. He and his comrades stand against the darkness... Or do they?

Having received a contract, Godwin undertakes to fulfill it when he is confronted by Yaura, a former partner. Determined to wring her fair share of the reward from him, Yaura demands he hand over the bounty of his current assignment to her, as he had left her for dead when last they'd met.

Confronting the warden at the frigid hel prison that is Snowpit, Godwin and Yaura track down their fugitive, only to make a horrifying discovery....

“Fairy tales are the children of legends, which in turn are the children of myths.”- Yaura

Stars of Ice and Shadow slithers into your mind as if an intangible entity; filling your thoughts with foreboding and kisses of fear. It wraps itself tightly around your imagination, stealing free will until all you can think about is FINISHING.THIS.BOOK!

Riveting! Stars of Ice And Shadow is full of action, subtle nuances, and characters that leap off the page and demand your attention; the intertwining plot lines resemble a Gordian Knot. Don't blink, you might miss something! Highly recommend to anyone that enjoys fantastical, mystical realms, swords and sorcery and unlikely heroes.

I did enjoy reading the book, but it also seemed to drag a little here and there. I will continue on this journey, but some additional background and explanations of this world might have helped.

The premise of this book sounded interesting to me, but I found myself over and over just not being able to get into the story. I think part of it was the writing style and part of it was just having a hard time following the jump cuts to different perspectives (too many names to keep track of that just wouldn't stick in my mind). The author seems good and I think my experience says more about me than him; I'd still recommend giving this one a chance and sort it out for yourself whether this one is for you or not.
