Stealing Time: Book 1 - A Time Travel, Historical Fiction Adventure (Stealing Time Series) Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 776 ratings

A devastating hurricane. A time travel betrayal. Will Ronnie survive the witch hunt or forever be lost in time?

Stealing Time is the first book in the best-selling "Breathtakingly original" time travel series that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

As Hurricane Charley churns a path of destruction towards Orlando, Florida, Ronnie Andrews scrambles to prepare for the storm and seeks shelter at her boyfriend’s weather lab. What she finds there is more terrifying than Mother Nature's destruction.

During the peak of the hurricane, Ronnie is hurtled back in time to eighteenth-century London where she is caught in a web of superstition, deception, and lies in a life and death struggle to return to her own time.

Her best friend Steph is thrust into the middle of the hurricane, where it quickly turns into a living nightmare as she is faced with losing everything.

Stealing Time is the first book in the “breathtakingly original” Stealing Time Series of time travel wrapped in a hurricane. If you like strong-willed modern women and gripping stories that transport you back in time, then you’ll love KJ Water's Books.

Don’t miss the next book in the series,
Shattering Time, available now, set during Hurricane Frances tossing Ronnie back to the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island in a fight for her life and for those facing the mysterious disappearance of our first colony in America.

Killing Time - Book 3 in the Stealing Time series will be published on September 27, 2021.

Diane Rapp5.0 out of 5 stars Nailbiting tension in two stories!Reviewed in the United States Verified PurchaseLoved this original twist on a time travel story. During a hurricane in Florida, Ronnie is hurtled back in time to eighteenth-century London and occupies the body of a real woman. She must learn how to survive the "witch hunt" mentality of her cruel brother while she tries to find a way back home. How did this happen?
Her best friend Steph faces peril of a different kind--the wrath of a killer storm. She gathers a small group together and tries to keep them all alive. The book is filled with nailbiting tension and kept me reading well into the night to find out what happened. Recommended!Buk crzy
5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Now that's what I call a man going the extra mile! Way to go!Reviewed in the United StatesVerified PurchaseWhen Ronnie leaves at the start of hurricane Charley to meet her boyfriend Jeffrey, she didn't realize that she was in for the ride of her life. Her boyfriend has secretly made her the test subject of his study on time travel. She is transported back to a time before women are permitted to voice their opinions or even speak out of turn. Ronnie switches bodies with the soft spoken Londoner, Regina Ingram, sister to Jack Ingram. Jack is trying to marry his 17 year old sister off to put the family business in better standing. This is a fantastic story with many twists and turns with wonderfully loveable characters and a awesome hateable one in Jack Ingram. I can't wait to see what happens next in this series.

From the Author

This is my first book every published! After spending ten years, I finally wrapped it up and paired it down into a trilogy. Since then, I've added enough to create a four book series and may continue with a fifth or pursue a few spin off ideas I have. Killing Time is the third book in the series and will be released on September 27, 2021, where the time travel adventure continues during the tumultuous 2004 hurricane season in Central Florida.

Bananas time-travel entertainment
4 out of 5 stars
Bananas time-travel entertainment
With its bananas time-travel plot, whirlwind-fast pace, and considerable evidence of diligent research, Stealing Time is one heck of an entertaining read. Switching back and forth between present-day (2004) Florida and 18th century (1752) London in this series starter, Ms. Waters tells the story of American Ronnie Andrews who was flung into the past right before the Calendar Change, and her Scottish best friend Steph who had to endure the calamitous Hurricane Charley. Both stories were action-packed and placed the major characters in life-threatening situations. Of the two parallel plotlines, I am partial to Ronnie’s unwilling adventures in the past. Those scenes brought to life the awful living conditions of the common people in England, the evils of the patriarchy, and the horrors of the Witch Trials. Ronnie’s plight as the hapless Regina Ingram was downright heartbreaking. Her fight to survive amidst impossible obstacles endeared her to me. Matthias’ wholehearted support of her despite physical damage to himself did as well. My interest in the succeeding books is all because of the promise of these two eventually achieving their happily-ever-after ending. While I was impressed with the realistic description of the disasters caused by a powerful hurricane, I wasn’t too engaged with the story of Steph and her friend Nick. Their scenes only distracted from knowing about what’s happening in Ronnie’s fight for her life. One of the things I liked about this book is that it incorporated historical facts seamlessly. Before reading this, I wasn’t aware of the details of England’s switch from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar and the missing eleven days. And, although gruesome, the vivid depiction of the hangings was incredibly fascinating. Along with the weakness in the B plot, the inconsistencies of the accents and the punctuation errors brought my rating lower for this otherwise entertaining book.

I have three fairly basic criteria that will earn a book an instant 5-star review: It's makes me laugh, it makes me cry, and it keeps me up past my bedtime. As you have probably guessed, "Stealing Time" definitely hit the mark. I also have tremendous respect for an author who takes nine years to bring a book to completion. Now, of course, this is really bad news if you have to wait that long for the next episode, which hopefully won't be the case! But IMHO, there's a certain richness that a novel achieves with time versus those that are kicked out in a few weeks. No offense to those who do so, of course, I'm probably just jealous, because I'm another one who takes a while to finish up a book. Sometimes much longer than nine years, but that's another story. What I'm getting at is the quality of the characters, imagery and plot details show when a book, like a fine wine, has aged a bit, giving the author time to rethink, embellish and perfect their story. Yeah. Like a fine wine.
As a time travel story, this one is outstanding. The mechanism that transfers the heroine, Ronnie, back in time is in the realm of science fiction, i.e., credible, but not belabored. Thus, this is not true science fiction fodder, but more in the realm for those who love historical fiction since the majority of the story takes place in 18th Century England with some flashbacks (or would it be flashforwards?) to Florida enduring Hurricane Charley, back in 2004, which precipitated the transfer.
The research for this period of time was incredible. The reader is truly transferred back in time to a world so different than ours it feels like another planet. If you don't think the world has made any progress in the past two hundred fifty years, you definitely need to read this book. While today's world definitely has its problems and fundamental human nature doesn't change, it's incredible to get a glimpse of what England was like back in 1752. Wow. I, for one, am reminded how lucky I am to be living in this century. There are plenty of undercover lessons here, too, with regard to superstitious and unreasonable beliefs that drive a culture, in this case the ridiculous view of what qualified a woman as a witch and how she was subsequently tried and treated. Chilling and horrifying are the first words that come to mind.
The imagery and action was absolutely breathtaking, especially the last fourth of the book, at which point I just sucked it up regardless of the late hour and finished. Since this is the first book in a trilogy, I knew everything wouldn't be solved, but it did provide a satisfying ending, though there were certainly plenty of unanswered questions to drive the reader's hunger for the next volume. I highly recommend this well-written story to anyone who loves a thriller, historical fiction or romanticizes the past. Believe me when I say we have come much farther than you may think.

I really enjoyed this book on so many different levels. I live in Florida, so it was easy for me to relate to the descriptions of the hurricane. Actually, this author is amazing in describing everything. It was never overly done (you know, those stories where you are reading paragraphs of details without anything ever happening). Everything was described in such a way that it sucked you into the scene and helped you to hear, smell, see, and taste it (and there were many times that you absolutely did NOT want to taste or smell it...lol!).

I do not like historical fiction. I stay away from the stories that take place in past centuries, but this one was surprisingly refreshing. The story line for Ronnie was so fixated on her situation that I could easily accept the historical fiction. In fact, it was brilliantly embedded. I can honestly say that I am SO happy that I was not born during that time. I doubt I would have lasted as long as Ronnie. lol!

I loved the perspective of Steph, Ronnie's friend, as well. The author does a great job of alternating perspectives at the right time to keep you in suspense and to tease you into not putting the book down. It was great! I also liked that Ronnie and Steph were strong characters. They both dealt with fear and worry and panic, but they also had strong resolves, and I loved that.

When I first started reading this book, I did not know that it was part of a series, so as it got closer to the end, I was expecting the wrap up which didn't happen. I was quite disappointed with the ending. I love cliff-hanger endings, so it wasn't that. In fact, it wasn't much of a cliff-hanger (no spoilers). It just ended abruptly. I could tell that the author was throwing in some hints, and they worked; I am curious about many things that were dropped at the end. I just felt as if the ending felt rushed. :-/ I wouldn't let that deter anyone from reading the book, though. There is no doubt that book two will pick up right where book one left off, and if it's anything like book one, it will be a fantastic read! :-)

As Hurricane Charley is bearing down on Florida, Ronny seeks refuge in her boyfriend’s science lab. That’s when strange things happen. She is thrust back in time to 18th C England in a stranger’s body. As she’s trying to come to terms with this change of events, navigate the customs of that era and try to find her way back, her life is put in peril many times over.

While Ronny is dealing with this, her friend Steph is trying to survive the hurricane in a parallel storyline.

This was a good read however, the storyline with Steph seemed like it had a different author. The writing style was different, seemed rushed and irrelevant to the overall plot. It was a bit amateurish.

Oh. My. Gosh. Talk about a page turner! Two of my favorite genres skillfully intertwined with mind boggling suspense!

This book pulled just about every emotion out of me that you can think of! It's very well written and seemed to be well research lending believability to some pretty unbelievable situations, time travel aside.

The characters are interesting and diverse and introduced at a rate that is not too hard to keep track of. The creative storyline deserves a standing ovation!

I love not being able to figure out what comes next and this book kept me on the edge of my seat unable to stop reading, so bravo for that! While I understand subtle cliffhangers are expected where sequels are concerned, the end of this book left me a little unfulfilled, though I expect they will be answered in the next segment! Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant read!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 8, 2015
The first book in this trilogy opens with an idiot thinking he could outwit Hurricane Charley. Breathless opening sequence as the storm seeks him out, followed by an accurate and disturbing description of what happens to somebody caught in a hurricane.

This storm affects the people in this story very differently. Ronnie, the female lead, is somehow transported back to the eighteenth century. She feels the same but looks very different, and in this strange antiquated world, she has an angry and violent brother.
There turns out to be a very good reason for her transportation, and it has a lot to do with a bracelet she wears. I loved the way the author makes us jump through time and back again, as we keep track of the storyline.

Going back in time is usually portrayed as an exciting occurrence, but not in this book. Ronnie has never been treated so brutally before, and the bloodletting scenes are brilliantly written. It’s not just Ronnie who has been misplaced, parts of history are not right either.

This book has it all. Mysterious circumstances, violent characters, historical facts, and more than a touch of the supernatural. Our heroine is subjected to an arranged marriage, a witch hunt and a little romance along the way. Her life is threatened more than once, and her struggle to live will leave you breathless.
