Stellar Fox (Castle Federation Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 2,709 ratings

LEGENDARY ... AND UNTESTED

Captain Kyle Roberts delivered one of the Castle Federation's few victories in the early days of the war. Even losing his ship in the process didn't prevent him being elevated as the hero the Stellar Fox his country desperately needed.

His status with the public demands a worthy command, and he finds himself on the bridge of the Federation's latest supercarrier and headed to the front lines of the war.

But the Navy sees his promotion as a public relations stunt. His subordinates and superiors alike question his lack of experience and enemies at the highest level of his own government manoeuvre to destroy him.

As the war heats up around him, the Commonwealth may not be the greatest threat to Kyle Roberts or Avalon.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Castle Federation - and Space Carrier Avalon - is straight up military SF in the finest tradition. [...] This series has enough pew-pew to scratch the itch for action and enough characterization to make you care about who gets killed."

- Nathan Lowell, author of the Solar Clipper series

"Space Carrier Avalon was a fast-moving space adventure story, with plenty of twists and turns and some stunning action sequences, and Stellar Fox continues in the same vein, but manages to still surprise. [...] I can wholeheartedly recommend this book [...] to any fans of military science-fiction, and I'm already looking forward to the next book to come!"

- Richard Tongue, Author of the Battlecruiser Alamo series

I really liked this book. It was better than the first in that character setup was already done. The flow, the twists, and the honor of the people involved.coupled with the dishonorable actions of the antagonist forces makes for a great story.

This was a solid story. It builds strongly on the foundation created in Space Carrier Avalon, and the characters are both believable and fun. Perhaps the only large problem is that some of the new characters introduced in this tale lack the attention to detail that characterized the original cast. The explanation for some of the motives and habits runs a bit thin in my opinion.

Other than that my only real complaint is one I've had for this entire series and that is that the technology doesn't make much sense. Missiles appear to function as self-guided kinetic weapons that require direct hits. Yet, despite that limitation small numbers can manage to break through ship defenses surprisingly often. Yes, this is often assisted by starfighters (which are this universes uberhammer), but it made me think that the military designers in this universe didn't have any understanding of point defense, as the ships are very vulnerable.

Give me a military technology set that makes more sense I'd probably give this 5 stars, as it is, I consider it a strong 4

I read this novel when it first came out but neglected to post a review. I've gone back and re-read it (something I do often with novels I really enjoy) and realized I liked it better the second time.

Glynn Stewart has two book series underway: this one (Castle Federation) and the Mage series (Starship's Mage and sequels.) This series is more of a military sf series, though not as hardcore "military" as Jack Campbell or some of the other recent military sf. The basic premise is that human space is divided into basically two federations, one centered on Earth and one consisting of former colonies which have banded together to resist Earth's dominance (the Castle Federation.) There are a few neutral systems but they don't come into play very much in the story.

The protagonists are part of the Castle Federation space navy, including Kyle Roberts, a Space Navy Captain (the titular "Stellar Fox".) Kyle is an intriguing character, a reluctant hero who is nevertheless an excellent leader and combat strategist. There is a strong cast of supporting characters, and the author does a very good job of telling the story from multiple viewpoints and weaving in secondary story threads without disrupting the flow of the action.

One of the things I found most interesting about this second novel, is that the Commonwealth (the enemies) are not portrayed as necessarily evil or corrupt, just a different government with a different point of view and a bit more ruthless approach to combat. Once it a while it makes you wonder if the bad guys are really "bad" . . and I look forward to seeing how Stewart explores this more in the next installments.

If you enjoy military sf as well as stories with a human touch, you will definitely like this one . . . although I recommend reading "Space Carrier Avalon" (the first novel) before starting this one. Happy reading!

Loved it. Lots of twists and turns. I hope there’s a book 3, but given it’s 330am (I couldn’t stop reading, I had to find out what would happen) I’ll look when I wake up. Great book. Love this author

Although this, the second book in its series, is yet a continuation of one exemplary! story, I'm somewhat disappointed because of what seems a rushed editing job. The writing continues to astound though, and after all the quality of a book depends on its content so much more than the correct spelling of every word. This story continues to make space faring believable. With all the many unbelievable facts and details, when it is written by Glynn Stewart, they almost become fact, utterly believable. It is definitely imaginable and that counts as a success to me.
P.S. Re: Glenn Stewart, this series is actually some of his earliest writing! No wonder we love to read everything written by this obviously talented writer.

Time to start reading book 3. I can't wait to get started with book 3 and, the suspense is killing me, to find out how Keith will handle the insane senator/s who out of sheer hate for him as the the captain, encouraged one of its worst person to instigate a mutiny on his ship. With so many of their own now dead and the destruction of parts of their, his, most expensive ship, most advanced build.
Though, I'm not one that enjoys reading about the often unbelievable dirt, selfishness, and outright illegal actions taking place in politics, I understand that this despicable action which happened on his ship and behind his back needs dealing with. Politics, it's history, learned through recorded truth and "dirt", with all the conflicts that happens when run by self inflamed and ego driven individuals, and them taking their personal conflicts into the business of running countries! that's the worst of politics! yet all too common, so reminds me of past and present events we all have witnessed or read about in history books. Having to experience such in real life is bad enough, I really don't like reading about it in a science fiction story, in a fantasy. It makes me feel vulnerable and defenseless. Just yuck 😝! But this story is actually about Keith, the remarkable captain of Avalon, and his story I do want to read! Politics and all 🤓 aside. So off I go opening book 3, and I'll be back to let you know whether it was as great as the previous two, yes, politics aside.

This book carried the team forward in a very good way. The challenges included military battles plus spies and political intrigue. Very well written, good pacing of the story, and expansion of the characters. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to the next book in the series!
