Sticking to the Script: An Opposites Attract M/M Romance (Cipher Office Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 578 ratings

Steven Thompson had a bad year. A string of mean, kinky (the alarming kind, not the good kind), and crazy dating debacles combined with a boss who appears to be experiencing male-prenatal-psychosis means Steven’s stress levels are high. They’re so high, he’s decided to quit dating and focus instead solely on his job. Until he meets Dr. Ken Miles.

Doctor Ken Miles is having a fantastic year. His hard work is paying off in a big way . . . professionally. But his social life? Not so much. Until he meets Steven Thompson. Steven isn’t so sure about Dr. Miles, but Ken is one hundred percent certain about Mr. Thompson. And even though both men know full well that the key to getting what you want out of life is hard work, they can’t seem to make them—together—work.

Will they ever get on the same page? Or just keep sticking to the same old script?

'Sticking to the Script' is a full-length contemporary romantic comedy, can be read as a standalone, and is book #2 in the Cipher Office series, Knitting in the City World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

First off: if gay sex freaks you out, skip those pages or find another book. It's a great book. Just putting it out there because I'm tired of seeing complaints of 'gratuitous sex scenes' in review for romance novels. If you want everything stopped at the bedroom door, read 'Christian romance'.
I really enjoyed the book. It was great to see Steven in Steven's voice. I've read ALL of Knitting in the City including the fragments tossed from the original books. You get to see Steven as a good friend and fun coworker. This version of Steven was sympathetic and real instead of zany and kind. Not that those aren't some of my favorite character traits, but it was great to see more than flamboyance.
His reaction to his assault was real. I find it a little distressing that he never used that word. It was assault. But I think the author not staying it flatly maybe because Steven is doing the victim's recrimination dance. At what point am I going to be believed? What could I have done differently? With my being gay is a cop even going to fill out a form? Many people don't know when to ask for help and the fear of not being believed or not having enough evidence to do anything about the situation makes people helpless. This would have been a very different story had he NOT been a wealthy white male living in a secure building with backup from friends and coworkers.
I really appreciated the realistic handling of so many of the characters reaction to Dr. Ken Miles' bisexuality. It's very difficult to be bi. Both gay and straight friends automatically assume you're 'confused' or 'playing' at being bi.
It was good to see Ken redeemed. Dr. Elizabeth Finney ( from Friends Without Benefits) gave us a DKM who was mostly pompous jerk who picked his nose. ( granted Elizabeth's view of things is frequently a grain of salt situation) He's much more relatable in this book. The fact that he doesn't explain to Steven that these are dates says a lot more about living in his own head and less about self-absorbtion. I liked that when he realized that he hadn't made his intentions clear, that he rectified it quickly without the fifty pages of angst that many romance novels fall into.
I liked that we met Ken's family and that things improved after they all got together to air their feelings instead of leaving him out in the cold or with more reasons to privatize his sexuality and emotions.
    A great read.

Sticking to the Script by Stella Weaver is a release by Smartypants Romance which tells stories within Penny Reid's Knitting In the City (KITC) universe. Steven Thompson has an amazing job and great friends but falls short when it comes to romance. Dr. Ken Miles lives a solitary life consisting of mostly work and exercise. Steven and Ken find themselves drawn to each other after a few surprise interactions. As they get to know each other and their feelings grow both men find secrets and life are pulling them apart. Can they put their fears and secrets behind them to really embrace each other or will real problems keep them apart.

The story is paced where you get the full insider knowledge of how each feels as their relationship changes and grows. The beginning tended to drag for me a bit but around the halfway mark it picked up and moved at a more steady pace. The romance is sexy but sweet and you feel that it adds to the story. Overall, Sticking to the Script was a unique mm contemporary romance, and I am interested in reading other books by Stella Weaver

Sticking to the Script is a fabulous read. Fabulous. Marvelous. I might be slightly in love with it.

This story has so much going for it, it’s hard to know where to start.

First, the story-line. There are just so many different angles in there. The main story is of course the out-of-sync relationship between Steven and Ken. It’s heart-warming, frustrating and downright nerve-wrecking to read about. With a spectacular HEA. I came away with all the warm fuzzies imaginable. But there are so many side-stories that are just as intriguing. Steven’s stalker and his strained relation with his grumpy boss. The prejudice Ken has to deal with because of his sexuality and his family’s reaction to his love for Steven.

Then, it’s the characters. They’re so lovable. Funny. Quirky. Imperfect. Steven is super funny and sweet but always deflecting and downplaying to hide his own insecurities and hurt. Always looking out for everyone else but afraid to let someone see the real him. Then there’s Ken. The model-perfect Doctor hiding his tender heart and warm personality behind a facade. Always coming off as arrogant and rude when in reality he’s mostly just socially awkward and unsure. Both Steven and Ken are just so real. It’s beautiful writing and beautiful character development. And there are so many supporting characters to fall in love with too. I know I will buy more books about the Cipher world because I need to get their stories too. Elizabeth and Nico, Kat and Dan, Quinn and Janie.

The story-telling is really impressive. The way all the different threads of the story is weaved together is bloody talented. It was entirely engrossing, all the the time. There wasn’t a single part of the book that had me bored or wanting to skip forward. I was caught in each single moment, just along for the ride that Weaver so expertly conjured.

This is great romance. Great entertainment. Great everything. Read it.

I've been waiting for Steven's romance, but I never expected the guy to be Dr. Ken Miles from Elizabeth and Nico's book. They don't seem like a good pairing based on the earlier books, but they actually are perfect for each other. The story is concurrent with Kat and Dan's book and includes some of the same material (not that it's a problem at all).
Dr Ken or DKM mellows a lot here. His backstory is interesting and he's so puppydog eager to have a relationship with Steven. I admire his ability to put it all out there. Steven's stressed by a number of things and so misses some clues at first, but once he catches on, wowza!
Another great addition to the Smartypants Romance pantheon.

    I loved this book!
This book is published by Smartypants Romance and as such is based in the Pennyverse. Thus I had met both Steven and Dr Ken Miles before - Steven I liked, Dr Ken Miles I thought was an utter arse. In this book, Stella Weaver has created a story that allows the characters to really develop and by the end of it, I was firmly rooting for Ken! The characters are real, with flaws, which makes their story a joy to read, whilst heart wrenching at the same time. It stands alone and you do not need to have read any books from Penny Reid’s Knitting In The City to enjoy this M/M romance.

Just. Awesome. I especially loved how you incorporated some of the scenes from Kat and Dan’s book but from Steven’s perspective. We had been really looking forward to Steven’s book and you just nailed it! Thank you
