Stone Cold Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 4,296 ratings

From #1 Amazon and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Winter Renshaw comes a scorching hot forbidden romance ...

The most humiliating moment of my life begins with an early morning message from my ex’s notoriously heartless best friend.

Jovie—

In no way does this mean my opinion of you has changed.

I’m reaching out because sometime in the middle of last night you tagged yourself in Jude and Stassi’s engagement photo.

I don’t care if you were drunk or it was unintentional. I suggest you remove it immediately since the wedding is in two months (which I’m sure you know since you were clearly FB stalking them). The damage is done, but no reason to make things more awkward.

You’re welcome.

Stone

I waste no time removing my accidental tag before the sharp-tongued novelist in me fires off a response to the man who harbored extreme and inexplicable hatred of me during the three years I dated his best friend in college.

Only I didn’t expect him to respond.

And nothing could have prepared me for what he would say …

… or for all the ways this gorgeous villain with cruel icy blues would become the biggest plot twist my life had ever known.

For Those Who Saw Them First
5 out of 5 stars
For Those Who Saw Them First
2nd Chance “SHOULD’VE BEEN” Romance What started out as a desperate attempt to ward-off her worsening cold symptoms and meet her book deadline, Jovie makes a plea to the Nyquil gods. Unfortunately for her, the Nyquil deities leave her with an innocent case of “cyber stalking”, instead. That dreaded “LIKE” button becomes the weapon that instigates an unforeseen battle with her ex’s best friend, Stone. Stone (SHOULD’VE SAID) “I saw her 1st” …. is a 27yr old orphan that hails a career as a sought-after divorce attorney. He’s seen the ugly side of humanity in his clients and is, therefore, ANTI-relationship/marriage. He’s your typical rude anti-hero “HERO”, who secretly has a heart bigger than the state of Texas. But he’s put that same heart on lockdown and reigns his world by carefully constructed self-mandated rules. He has valued loyalty and his friendship w/Jude (his self-centered, over-indulged, life-long best friend) over his own happiness. I think his greatest regret and his one true fault is being an enabler to Jude. Jovie (SHOULD’VE REALIZED) “Nyquil is my metaphorical social hurricane” …. is a 27yr old, highly successful, passionate, historical romance author with a hefty, diversified retirement portfolio. Always quick with a comeback in the on-going battle of wits with Stone. She's confident and comfortable in her own skin and has always had a plan for her life. Unfortunately, she’s had her world burned to the ground, not once, but twice and is actually still battling the blaze from her latest failed relationship. She’s got an amazing, #rideordie bestie that any self-respecting woman would aspire to be. Jude (JUST SHOULD’VE) had his as* kicked a long time ago…. is a #grassisalwaysgreener kind of guy, immature, narcissistic, a taker. Winter NAILED his character. EVERYONE has had, at least one person like this in their life. He's always had a co-dependent relationship w/his dad and Stone, which has resulted in him being a spoiled, over-indulged man-child, who can’t see anything beyond his own wants/needs. He’s been a horribly selfish friend to Stone. He’s the guy who sucks the life out of those who love him and will need a lot of soul-searching to redeem himself. But I see hope for him, for sure. WINTER… has ALWAYS been a “one-click” author for me. I highly recommend this book if you love an unapologetic alpha who is brought to his knees by a mutt he never wanted to know and the woman who teaches him to embrace that Texas sized heart and live for himself for a change. PS…I’m also anxious to see if Jude gets his own book 😉. He deserves a chance to get his sh*t together. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Ever hear a story about a guy and a girl and another guy? Both men in love with the same girl?

They all met at the same college party. Jovie who had been drinking heavily, met Stone first but didn’t even get his name before she had to make it the restroom fast. In the bathroom, she nearly tackles Jude on her way to the toilet. She spends the rest of the evening eating pancakes with him at the local diner. Love is born…for all three.

Jude and Jovie became inseparable. Stone watched the match from a distance. When Jude introduced Jovie to his best friend, she recognized him immediately, but he did not “remember” her. Supposedly. Occasionally, Jovie would wonder “what if” something had happened between she and Stone if they had continued their conversation. What if they fell in love?

The three of them even lived together as roommates their senior year of college until the guys-only vacation to Tulum. Jude noticed Stassi, the siren, at the resort and suddenly there was no more Jude and Jovie.

Five years later, all three are thriving. Jovie is a successful historical romance author. Stone is a prosperous divorce attorney, and Jude works for his future father-in-law. They don’t interact at all until Jovi tags herself into Jude and Stassi’s engagement photo on Facebook.

Stone, who remained silent about his attraction to her all through college, messages Jovie to take the tag down so begins the current plot of the Stone-Jovie-Jude saga.
Ms. Renshaw tells this story through flashbacks (Stone and Jovie) to give the reader the background of the characters interspersed with present events. The reader will fall in love with the integrity of Stone and the bravery of Jovie.

I must admit that I am a Winter Renshaw superfan and love her books. I don’t even need to read the synopsis to know that I want the book. I did receive this as an advanced reader copy from Booksprout, but L enjoyed it so much that I bought my own personal copy that I could read anytime I wanted.

My recommendation is it is a winner, very positive and entertaining. Buy it or get it on Kindle Unlimited. It’s an easy read that you will not be able to put down!

I knew I was going to like this from the very beginning as it had the same kind of vibe as Something Borrowed, which is a favorite book of mine. I have been to Portland, Maine, before and find New England just breathtaking and was happy to learn the story took place in the majestic small town.

Our trio of friends met in college when Jovie Vincent attends a party that both Stone Atwood and Jude are attending. Even though he saw her first, Stone takes a back seat when Jovie stops by the boy’s house in college, because she’s not there to see him, but Jude. As a result, he wears a shield for the next 8 years until a situation arises that has them crossing paths once again. Raised as brothers since childhood, these two are very close but couldn’t be more different.

The story is brilliantly told in the past and the present in dual points of view so as readers, we have an inside glimpse into how they are each feeling and what happened over the three years they were Jude and Jovie were together. Jovie was such a breath of fresh air, so honest and goodhearted, and not afraid to wear her heart on her sleeve or follow her dreams. She was so very likable!

I loved her relationship with her BFF, and what an honorable man Stone turned out to be. This was a slow burn as they each tried to process their feelings and not hurt the other, but was so glad when Stone decided not to deny himself any longer. Feeling tormented for years because of his friendship with Jude, it was Jude’s wise father, who actually gave him the push he needed.

There was lots of angst when the three of them were together in college, but the author did a wonderful job clearly identifying who the couple should be. I loved all the tension and build-up, and felt it was high time Jude did some deep reflection and grew up. Loved how once Stone professed his love, he was all in, and how Jovie, who was a romance writer, got her very own HEA. All the feels!

My only wish is that there was another chapter dedicated to them as a happy couple in the future. While I enjoyed the epilogue and felt the proposal was perfect and swoon-worthy, I felt it ended abruptly and would have liked more, especially since this is a standalone.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It was my first book by Winter and I'm happy to have discovered her. I listened to the audio in tandem with the book and loved the narration. The story is told in flashbacks between present and past. Sometimes flashbacks feel clunky or like they slow down the pace. But not here! Winter keeps the flow & continuity going throughout and the glimpses into the past help push the story forward. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

When I read the synopsis I was a little wary. Stone Cold sounded like it could either be a gem or one of those books with those tropes that just make me feel a little dirty (and not in a good way).

Am I so, so glad I took the plunge and opened this up. This is a story of two people who have done the work, have felt the emotional growing pains, and now get to reap the rewards of emotional maturity.

While so many romance novels (which I love) are a journey alongside two people doing the work and then finally coming together, this is a variation in which we get to journey alongside the validation that the work these two did on their own was such that when they finally came together, it was in a beautiful, heartwarming, mature and sexy way. And my god, do I love a contemporary bodice ripping 😍

My therapist would be proud of these two. And yet there was still enough drama that it was exciting and I couldn’t guess exactly how it was going to play out. And that epilogue… if I was an author… what a dream.

I loved Stone & Jovi so much. In a way they were very similar. Both of them were taken advantage of by a person who didn't deserve them. Difference is, Jovie got rid of Jude while Stone had to tolerate his commitment phobe self and bear the weight of his immature decisions until Jovie came back into his life five years later. Undoubtedly, Stone had always been the better man, he just took one wrong decision and let the love of his life slip away. But what he didn't realise that he had been the best choice all along. Overall, I liked the plot, there was no unnecessary drama just the sht that Jude spewed annoyed me a lot but I was happy that Jovi payed him no attention because he absolutely deserved it. It was about time that Stone finally got the one girl he always loved.

What can I say? I like Winter Renshaw. This is a nice love-story for relaxing, and - of course - with a happy end. But it's also a well written book with an actual story, a lovely main female lead-character and an reluctant male hero, who would like to not been recognised as such. The description of the friendly town was an added bonus to the story. I liked it a lot.
