Styx & Stones: An Ugly Cry Friends to Lovers Romance (The Friend Zone) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 113 ratings

We thought we had forever. We were wrong. Alaska Stone is everything I've ever dreamed of. For years, I’ve watched her in the halls, wanted her, but she never knew I existed. Not until she walked into my chemo session. For me, it was love at first sight. For her? It might take a little longer. But hey, it’s not like we’re on a deadline or anything.

All I have to say is .... I did not ugly cry. Yay me? Or is it my black heart again? Oh, there were tears but it was different. I laughed. I wept. I felt good and then the sads hit. Like the silent flow of tears you have when you know something may happen but you’ve come to terms with whatever it may be because you see the light in it all.
What a beautifully crafted book about a subject matter that hits close to home.

Styx and (Alaska) Stone are 2 17 year olds that run in very different crowds. Styx has held a torch for Stones (as he calls her) for years, but she has never even noticed him. So, when Stones walks in to his chemo group his world is turned upside down.

"The girl I've watched from afar for seven has cancer. The girl I've loved since the fifth grade walked into my chemo session, and I feel as if my whole world just ...... imploded."

These two teenagers have been handed a horrible deck of cards. Styx and Stones are two teens dealing with a horrible disease and they both are dealing with it in a very different way. Styx beat cancer once, but it's back and he believes he only has a short amount of time left. He deals with his life in humor. Dark humor and seeing the inevitable. Meanwhile, Stones has just been dealt her news so she is fighting. Or at least she thinks she is, until she meets Loner Boy (what she calls Styx). Then these two find out that they really need each other more than they ever thought.

"You don't distract me from my cancer. If anything, you make me more aware there's a chance I might die without ever getting to touch you the way I want."

Carmen Jenner took a horribly ugly disease and made two young people have to deal with this ugly word. There was no filler, no extra in this book. It was a fairly quick read, but included everything. From discovering the awkwardness of first love, to finding your own self in the middle of a disease. It was full of life, family and a softness. I laughed and cried and was right there with these two kids that deserved so much more than what life handed them.

If you take a chance on this YA whatever age you may be, you will find the wonder and the sadness that this subject matter brings to all involved. These kids didn't always make the right decisions, but they made the decisions that were right for them at the moment. Because their moments were for them only.
*Be prepared with tissues, something for your heart and perhaps a little alcohol to dampen all the emotions. Carmen fed it to us like we were starving for it. ;)

I have to admit I was a little bit filled with trepidation knowing the underlying topic of this story however I can truly say it is so much more and so carefully crafted. The darker side of the cancer is balanced with humour, especially through Styx, and he has a wicked sense of humour. I literally couldn’t put this down!

Styx Hendricks and Alaska Stone, although at the same high school, get to know each other through chemotherapy treatments and their illnesses. This is their story.

Styx comes across as brash and full of bravado but there is a lot more to him. His use of humour to help him cope with the gravity of the situation he finds himself in actually is funny, he endeared himself to me very quickly. Stones, as a character, I found to be very realistic and I could totally understand her reactions. I enjoyed watching her growth and especially liked how she also started to respond with humour. I found Styx’s reaction to her doing interesting though.

I’m not going to lie, the emotions in this story are deep and intense and at times heartbreaking. The ending is perfect though! I know this story is going to stay with me forever.

So, what constitutes a happy ending? I was just telling a friend of mine that the romance community forgives just about any sin of a romance couple as long as there is a semblance of a happy ending to end out a book, duet, trilogy, or series. It’s our final act of forgiveness. But what happens when the “happily ever after” isn’t what you expect? What happens if “happy” is framed in a different way than you might want? I call that provocative. And I think it’s the reason you should be reading Carmen Jenner’s newest book, Styx & Stones.

I need to state that I had not read the lead-up book to this one, Harley & Rose. What captured my attention and engaged me was the first line of the book’s blurb: “cancer sucks. And then you die.” How does one craft a story between two teenagers with cancer and create that obligatory “happy ending?” That was my question. Having not read Carmen Jenner before or the book prior to this one, I went in blind, not knowing what to expect. This is what I found:

*This book is more novella than a novel. It’s short at, I believe, 125 words. And you will gobble it down like a snack. Jenner keeps the reader engaged in this story of two teenagers who attend the same high school and find each other during chemo treatments. Styx is the hero. His cancer is back, and his prognosis isn’t good. Stones aka Alaska is new to cancer. Styx has loved Alaska from afar, and cancer brings them together. With his past experience with cancer, he helps her navigate the trauma of cancer and chemotherapy, and they eventually fall in love. However, both feel their days are few. How can they love each other when they have an impending end? Herein lies the genius of this book.

*You need to prepare yourself for the ending of this story. Styx lays this book out in the “Prologue.” You need to know: he isn’t lying. Trust him. He’s a straight-shooter. He says what is unpopular, and he treats life as temporary. As such, Jenner is going to give you a happily-ever-forever that you don’t expect. Be ready to accept it because I think it’s an important one in the discussion of cancer and death.

*This book is really an ode to people who have suffered with or had loved ones who have been touched by the ravages of cancer. This book is really a romance of sorts with that disease. Jenner offers insight into this life because she needs us to know its temporality. And the idea that love can exist there.

*I loved that Alaska and Styx’s first $ex is messy and uncomfortable. Neither is skilled. Jenner could have followed the pattern of others who have written YA/NA and crafted teens as skilled lovers. That isn’t the case here. However, Styx is a worthy student, and his love for Alaska makes him hungry for her. It was equal parts awkward and sweet.

*Yes, these two are teenagers, but Jenner gives them old souls. Even when they act like teenagers, you recognize the depth of their souls and their love for each other. That’s the essence of this story: their abiding love for each other, crafted in a short time under intense circumstances, but deep nonetheless.

If you have ever walked this journey or walked with someone else, this book could be a trigger for you. But I’d love for everyone to read it because Carmen Jenner is playing with the “happily-ever-after” here in a genre that thrives on it. Ultimately, Jenner’s Styx and Stones reminds us all that tomorrow is not promised, so love deeply, and find your “forever” with someone, even when it might not be there tomorrow.

Now, I am an old fart, so I don't really read much YA anymore, however this is a Carmen Jenner story, so it is a no brainer that I am going to read it.

The subject matter is not the easiest to read - F&ck Cancer and all that. However I was completely drawn into Styx and Alaska's story, and I ended up reading this book in one night.

Now, I know that the subject matter of this story is not going to be for everyone. I tackles heartbreaking subjects, and you can't help but cry for our lovelies as their stories unfold.

Now, I knew before I went in that this was going to be an emotional book, and I held it together for about 80% of the book, but then I was a blubbering mess, reading the story through copious amounts of tears.

Ms Jenner, I will be emailing you a bill for the shares in Kleenex I must have bought as I read.

I don't want to give anything away, as this is story you need to dive in blind and experience with the characters.

Just know that you need to read it.

I can't wait to see what Ms Jenner brings us next.

Styx & Stones is a truly heart breaking, soul crushing story, one that will stick with me for a long time.
Carmen Jenner is at her best when she is ripping out hearts out and Styx & Stones definitely does that. You'll be reaching for the tissues through out the entire book.
The story is about two teenage cancer patients who form an unbreakable bond and fall hopelessly in love while fighting for theirs lives. It had all of the feels.

A nicely written story, if all a bit predictable. Be warned, the story finished at 82% which was a surprise.
