Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Crime and detective thrillers don't just hype crime, but shed light on the timeless struggle of good versus evil--not just the battle but the mental game and emotional toll that crime takes.
In writing Tom Stone: Subterfuge, we see Detective Tom Stone trusting a man who's fighting for his family's honor, Luis Delgado.
I hope there's a little bit of Luis in all of us, people willing to stand up for what's right when the pressure's on to cave in. The man knows he has little power against organized crime and yet he perseveres and chooses his actions that turn from impulsive revenge to calculating the right moment.
My co-author, Lon Casler Bixby, and I didn't start out with a carefully plotted and planned approach but wrote based on what we had learned about narco-subs sailing the Pacific and even making their way across the Atlantic Ocean.
As we developed the story and the characters we began finding the passion. This book is the 6th in the Tom Stone series and, like all books, can be read as a stand-alone novel.

About the Author

Don Simkovich and Lon Casler Bixby took a dive into crime fiction with Tom Stone Nitty Gritty Christmas and other Tom Stone Detective Stories by bringing in elements of life of adopting out of foster care.
Don began writing early and knew fiction and non-fiction would be his way to report on life and illustrate life. Lon's work in film, photography, and script-writing is a perfect compliment and his screenplay Stone Cold became the basis for
Nitty Gritty Christmas, Sweltering Summer Nights, and Day of the Dead.
Simkovich and Bixby explore humor, justice, society, family, and the many nitty gritty details that make Los Angeles both an exciting and challenging place to live.
Don Simkovich - Don has always enjoyed the art of storytelling as a journalist, author, and marketing content writer. Fiction grabbed his interest at an early age and he has returned to the craft in the past several years, enjoying the mishaps, emotions, and happy endings his characters experience.

He lives with his family and dogs in Pasadena, California.

Lon Casler Bixby - Lon is a published author in various genres: Fiction, Poetry, Humor, Photography, and Comic Books. Each of the Tom Stone novels is engaging, drawing the reader into to action and the personal lives of the characters. But with Subterfuge and One Shot One Kill, the authors have really hit their stride! I didn’t think a submarine was a plausible smuggling tool, but recently read that they’re used to smuggle drug across the Atlantic to Europe! The authors not only know Southern California, they’ve researched the underbelly of society as well. Tom and his partner Jake try to shut down a ruthless cartel establishing itself in the suburbs of Los Angeles, while also trying to help a seemingly helpless Mexican caught up in the crossfire.
I’m looking forward to the next book in the series!

I chose to read and review a free digital copy of Subterfuge but that has in no way influenced my review.

Subterfuge is the first novel I have read by the team of Simkovich and Casler Bixby. It’s an intriguing story of smugglers, mafia style gangs and the police trying to stop them. When two cartels collide there is always friction and the creaky alliance made between the leader known as ‘Rabbit’ and De Vito’s gang stops this being the classic Cops vs Gangs, adding a third dimension for alliances and treachery.

One aspect of Subterfuge that shone through was the character of Luis Delgado. Delgado is the lone survivor from a failed drugs run. His life has been destroyed and he’s scared of going home in case the cartels find him. He becomes the unpredictable element in a story filled with drama. Casler Bixby and Simkovich have written a story that can be seen from 4 sides. The Cops (Stone and Sharpe) are a good pairing. Determined to get results even if it means using some friends in low places. De Vito’s cartel is a scary place to live – “serve well or die quickly” appears to be the unofficial motto. De Vito’s empire is growing with just one thorn in his side – the Ojo Negros Cartel. So when Rabbit from the Ojo Negros walks into De Vito’s stronghold and declares a partnership an uneasy truce starts to take place. The fourth and final view is from Delgado who finds himself in the middle of a situation he could never have imagined. A twisted character torn between revenge, staying alive and justice – which way will he turn?

Every time I opened this book I was desperate to see whether the characters would survive. Who would be gaining the upper hand and who would be taking a one way ticket on the next submarine smuggling drugs across the oceans. The authors do a wonderful job of making the readers feel empathy for some of the victims of the cartels. You want to protect them, you want them to win out, but you know they are up against all the odds and the chances of them being double crossed are high. The authors keep the action high throughout the book, luring the reader on for one more page in expert fashion.

Subterfuge is a recommended read for anyone looking for a thriller with plenty of action and strong characters. It will pull you in and keep you riveted until the final page. I’m sure there is more to come from the authors and I will be keeping my eyes peeled.

I chose to read and review a free copy of Subterfuge. The above review is my own unbiased opinion.

A mob boss and a cartel are in battle to be the top group in Los Angeles and surrounding areas. They are against each other until the leader of the cartel decides that they could work together with his contacts and the mob bosses’ ideas and contacts, they could rule the Los Angeles area, and both get richer than they already are.

Detective Tom Stone and his team are in a battle to bring the cartel and the mob boss down and put them behind bars before more bodies show up or more drugs make it to their town. He’s a determined detective that won’t rest until he can bring them all down and help the lone survivor of the submarine wreckage that was found. Detective Stone is determined to help Mr. Delgado, a man that was taken along with his son at gun point to work for the mob boss.

I really enjoyed this story. It is action packed and engaging from the first page until the end. The characters are entertaining, determined and focused while working to get the needed information to bring down the drug dealers. I give this story a 5-star review and look forward to more Tom Stone Detective novels to come. If you enjoy a fast paced, action packed, police detective stories, you should pick up Subterfuge.

Book 5 in this series is awesome, I haven’t read the previous books in the series, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. It’s a brilliantly written book that sees the detectives working to bring down a drug cartel and human trafficking ring. The plot is fast-paced and exciting to read. The characters have depth to them, and I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat at times. If crime thrillers is your genre then you have to read this book and read this author.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Many thanks to the authors / Books N All Promotions for the digital copy of this crime thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Human trafficking, drug smuggling, drug cartels, and a California mob boss. Toss in Detective Tom Stone and his investigative team and the mix becomes explosive.

The explosion was heard overnight .... in the early morning light, they saw bodies floating in the water ... blue barrels bobbing up and down in the water. But there was a survivor... Luis Delgado. He was forced into helping the men who were running the boat and his son was killed during the explosion.

He vows revenge and Tom Stone wants nothing more than to bring down the cartel before there is anymore blood shed.

It's easy to get lost in the non-stop action that begins on the very first page. The suspense is wrapped around deftly drawn characters. Although 6th in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone, but I do recommend starting at the beginning. The backstory is not to be missed. The ending comes in fast and furious ... and explosive.
