SUMMER SPARKS: Steamy beach holiday romance (Scarlet Bay Romance Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 316 ratings

Industrial designer Anna Wynn is strung tight from a devastating, long-held secret. Surely a few solitary days in her wealthy family’s beach house will help to calm her soul?
She’s furious to find a man has moved into her bedroom… the arrogant jerk has left his T-shirt on the bed, his shaver on the bedside chest (and, she assumes, his condoms in the top drawer, although she’s far too polite to check. He’s tall and tough and handsome, and no doubt gets through a lot of them).
He also proves to be the construction boss for the big new house her family is having built on the land at the rear, so she needs to play carefully.

Jason Jones takes one look at hostile, edgy Anna and knows it’s ‘game on’. The scornful glances from her gorgeous eyes feel like sandpaper and acid on his skin, and the itch is intense – and needs scratching. She might be way out of his league, but flaunting his streamlined body with its huge tattoo for a lunchtime surfing session shows her what’s on offer if she cares to climb down off her very high horse.

Enjoy the first sparks of an impossible love affair where two closed-off hearts are under siege. Opposites attract, and these two have it bad. They may come from different worlds, but who says the judge’s daughter can’t have a little fling with the drunkard’s son? Anna and Jason are a train-wreck when they’re apart, and together might possibly be perfect.
But will Jason be man enough to stay when Anna’s devastating secret is finally revealed?

SUMMER SPARKS is the first standalone novel in the Scarlet Bay series, and is sexy, funny and heart-warming. It’s intended for mature readers.

Note from Kris: These novels take you to faraway places where real men and women seek lasting love, sometimes against daunting odds.
All my books are standalones, and there are no cliff-hangers. The Heartlands books and Scarlet Bay books are best read in order but all the others can be read any way you please.

Review

Read what these Amazon reviewers say:"The story is wrought with angst, guilt, insecurities, and a growing love that can't be denied. I thought my Kindle might catch on fire.""LOVED the book.""Steamy delicious holiday romance that made me yearn for the coastline.""I read it in one sitting.""Two opposites who couldn't be more perfect for each other.""I am right in this book. I am the heroine.""The hero is 'a bit of rough' but he does it so well.""I completely fell for Jason and Anna, they are quirky, defensive, traumatized, both carrying far more baggage than any one person should."

From the Inside Flap

He ran his fingers slowly through her hair. "Are you always this persistent?"
"Probably," she confirmed, eyes closed like a cat being stroked. "I know I'm a bossy control freak."
"Oldest child?"
Her eyes shot open again. "Yes - how did you guess?"
His mouth twisted. "First one always gets the bossy genes. Mum said..." He stopped.
"Mum said what?" she asked as an enquiring wrinkle appeared between her brows.
He shrugged. "That the oldest looks after the others. That it's built in. The first child gets more parental attention to start with and that sets their personality. The younger ones are less responsible." He released her hair and urged her toward the bedroom. "Like Cathy riding my bike when she'd been told not to," he added, hoping Anna didn't hear the censure in his tone. "Even though it was too big for her. Even though she knew Trev would give her a hiding if he caught her."
"I suppose you got the hiding instead?"
Jason was pleased she was now walking in front of him and wouldn't see his face. "Something like that. I've no doubt it helped turn me into a caring human being," he added.
Anna turned, forcing him to a stop. "Don't
do that," she snapped."Don't make jokes about horrible stuff the way you sometimes do. I hate it."
He let loose a short bark of a laugh. "Only with you, Frosty. I seem to keep my guard up okay with the rest of the world. I've told you things I've never told anyone else." He indicated the office chair in front of his impressive computer screens. "Sit. I'll get another one."
She sat, swinging slowly from side to side as she inspected his set-up. "Serious gear," she said. "I didn't quite expect this."
He pushed a second chair across the room. "I'm not into rubbish tools. Do it once, do it well. Not into rubbish women either," he added, bending to kiss her again.
Anna tilted her head back and tried to glare at him. "Not even when you were sixteen and desperate?" she suggested, narrow-eyed.
He lowered himself onto the chair, parting his legs until his knee bumped hers. "Was never
that desperate. Anyway, I meant it as a compliment."
Her lips twitched as she tried to supress a smile. "Hmmm. Thank you, then. So why do you want to wait until after the exhibition to add the birds? When is it, anyway?"
Jason locked a hand on her thigh. "God, you're relentless. Definitely an oldest child."
He opened his laptop. "Middle of January. Part of the city's summer holiday celebrations."
"Doesn't give you much time."
"I can burgle the display downstairs if I need to." He squeezed her knee.
She opened her mouth again but stayed silent for a moment. He knew she was far from finished though, and sure enough, she asked, "But why are you hesitating about getting them online?" Her face was alight with enthusiasm. "Has anyone ever said anything less than complimentary about them? They took my breath away when I first saw them. And today Eric said 'Go and see the boss's birds' so he's obviously impressed by them. In fact, why not sell prints direct from your website?"
Jason deserted the keyboard and leaned back in the chair, sighing as he did so. "How much spare time do you think I have, Frosty? I work long days. I have several jobs underway most of the time. It's physical work. And then I chase other contracts, prepare quotes, source materials, make sure everyone's paid, keep the taxman happy..." He reached out for her hand. "Yeah, nice idea, but not going to happen."

Thanks for coming to meet me. I love words, and I use them to make the world a happier place by creating people who are perfect for each other – although maybe they can’t see that to start with.

I began writing at my local radio station in New Zealand and never stopped. TV followed, then horticultural articles (because I'm a keen gardener). After several advertising agencies, I then spent happy years as a retail ad manager. Totally hooked on fabrics, I surprised everyone by going into the curtain installation business with my husband and working for some of the capital city’s top designers. Good for my body, and it freed up my brain to write fiction. I didn't fall off my ladder once through drifting into romantic dreams, but I’ve certainly seen many beautiful homes and met wonderful people, and I may just have stolen glimpses of them for the books. (I didn’t say that, did I?)

I write sexy contemporary romance under my real name and the Merry Summerfield cozy mysteries as Kristie Klewes. These are funny and flirty and absolutely clean. (Well - apart from the bloodstains!)

I’m the author of more than thirty novellas and novels, three of which were finalists in New Zealand’s Clendon Award. Each can be read as a stand-alone, but some make up linked series. I hope you enjoy them all.

My more recent romances are billionaire beach stories about the wealthy Wynn family in Scarlet Bay - Summer Sparks, Summer Secrets, and Summer Spice. And the new Promise books - Promise You Nothing and Promise You Plenty.

Kris es una chispeante autora de romántica contemporánea, pura y simplemente. ¡Bueno, quizá no tan pura!

OMG I LOVED this book. The hero is a "bit of rough" but he does it so well. Oh boy he is one hot, sexy, contractor. This story is set in New Zealand, they really grow great guys there, so you learn a bit about that area as well. Anyway, the heroine's family has a cottage on the beach that they all go to on holiday. The house is really old and is being replaced and she is there to clean out some treasures the family has accumulated over the years.

The hero, sigh, is building the house next to hers. She is the rich girl from a wealthy family that has a lot of privilege. Her father is a judge, one cousin a pilot, a lawyer, etc. She is a designer. She is a bit up tight and certain recognizes the difference in her status and the status of the contractor. She looks down on him from the very beginning with ever intention of putting him in his place. But at 6'4" and all man she is having a bit of a problem looking at him without drooling.

He is instantly attracted to her but feels she is way above his station so no need to even try. As the day goes on after their first meeting, she has decided to live a bit on the wild side and take him to bed. And do they ever set the sheets on fire! OMG. Ms. Pearson can write a hero to die for and then have him one hot number in bed. The is a great story. You will not be able to put it down once you start reading. It just holds your attention from start to finish. He is quite funny too, crude at times but trust me, you will love it!!! The heroine develops into quite a lovely person. They get their happy ever after and her secret was painful but handled quite well. I love it when every one gets what is coming to them!!! Just too good. loved this story and HIGHLY recommend it.

I was not paid for this review. I am not an author nor do I know one. I am not kin to this writer. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less.

Kris Pearson is one of my favorite writers and this book did not disappoint. I love her sexy hunky guys and the women they love. Kris describes her homeland of New Zealand with such breathtaking description and beautiful detail.

Jason is a hard working guy who owns his own construction business. He is in direct competition with his father and there is a lot of resentment and bad blood between them. Jason grew up without money and the project he is on is for a wealthy island family. The daughter of the project he is working is arriving before her family and Jason thinks she is a spoiled society girl. When Anna arrives, he treats her as such. Sparks fly, accidents happen, and the attraction and bickering begin.

I love the tension between Jason and Anna. Jason acts like a Neanderthal at times and Anna pushes his buttons to the limit when he does. They strike up a fling they know is limited for a few stolen days. Then Anna's family will arrive and she will go back home.

They each have family issues and insecurities to be dealt with but put it all aside for sweet moments in paradise where Jason lives. More is revealed of his private life there on the island and they each begin to fall for one another but know it can't go any further than the few days they have.

The story is wrought with angst, guilt, insecurities and a growing love that can't be denied. I thought my Kindle might catch on fire. Hip hip hoorah for Kiwi guys. Get this book now!!

I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader Copy of this book and my opinions are my own.

As a "kiwi" I related very well to this book; so much so that I read it in one sitting. I have just read it again after a year or two and the story is just as compelling. I feel as though I know Jason and Anna personally. There are great descriptions of New Zealand life and customs, very true to life here, and the steamy scenes are well done and credible. Am about to start the second book and will review that later. Watch this space!

Good story, kind of slow some chapters. But loved it.
Not so sure about the main character, and I guess it took me a bit to like her.

Privilege vs the School of Hard Knocks. Sometimes it really doesn’t matter, no matter what you believe. This is the case with Anna and Jason. There is so much chemistry, so much heat, and ultimately, so much love. Author Kris Pearson has a wonderful start to a new (at least to me) series with a lush, wonderful setting (New Zealand), complex characters that will steal your heart, and families (some crazier than others). Now I find myself needing, yes needing, to read the other stories in this series.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. The honesty and intelligence of each character coming together in spite of their disparities lent just enough tension instead of the eye-rolling drama so often employed in story lines. More than ever makes me want to visit that part of the world!

Anna meets Jason when she goes down to her families cottage to sort out all the stuff that's accumulated ready for the renovation. He's the builder and their initial meet wasn't good because she wasn't happy his stuff was in the cottage and he thought she was a stuck up female. It soon changed though because the sex was way beyond what they both thought was just some fun. She got to know how talented he was with his photography but Jason worried they couldn't keep it a secret and she'd leave.

I have enjoyed all Kris Pearson's books, and this was one of the very best. Very strong characters, but none of the messing about with misunderstandings or miscommunications you often see in romances. These people say what they are feeling and work their way through their barriers. An original story, and thoroughly enjoyable.
