4.4 out of 5 stars 70 ratings

From the moment he was old enough to know what girls were for, Oliver Wynn had it bad for Meifeng Chan. But she was too realistic to ever accept a date with him; Ollie from the billionaire Wynn family and the little Chinese girl from the takeaway shop? Not going to happen! They come from different worlds, and heartbreak isn't on her family restaurant's menu.

Fifteen years later fate has slammed them together again. Ollie’s cousin Anna has asked him to keep flight attendant Mei hidden in their family’s new beach house so her abusive boyfriend can’t find her. Ollie is a man to be reckoned with now - furious and protective and spoiling for a fight. He swoops in like a knight in his silver plane, but Mei is wary and defensive and no way ready to trust him.

Will these opposites be so attracted that their long-delayed scorching love affair finally blossoms?
They have three long days to keep their hands off each other – if they can.

SUMMER SPICE is the third standalone book in the Scarlet Bay Romance series. Buy it now and enjoy a deeply emotional story about family, friendship, and never giving up.

Thanks for coming to meet me. I love words, and I use them to make the world a happier place by creating people who are perfect for each other – although maybe they can’t see that to start with.

I began writing at my local radio station in New Zealand and never stopped. TV followed, then horticultural articles (because I'm a keen gardener). After several advertising agencies, I then spent happy years as a retail ad manager. Totally hooked on fabrics, I surprised everyone by going into the curtain installation business with my husband and working for some of the capital city’s top designers. Good for my body, and it freed up my brain to write fiction. I didn't fall off my ladder once through drifting into romantic dreams, but I’ve certainly seen many beautiful homes and met wonderful people, and I may just have stolen glimpses of them for the books. (I didn’t say that, did I?)

I write sexy contemporary romance under my real name and the Merry Summerfield cozy mysteries as Kristie Klewes. These are funny and flirty and absolutely clean. (Well - apart from the bloodstains!)

I’m the author of more than thirty novellas and novels, three of which were finalists in New Zealand’s Clendon Award. Each can be read as a stand-alone, but some make up linked series. I hope you enjoy them all.

My more recent romances are billionaire beach stories about the wealthy Wynn family in Scarlet Bay - Summer Sparks, Summer Secrets, and Summer Spice. And the new Promise books - Promise You Nothing and Promise You Plenty.

Kris es una chispeante autora de romántica contemporánea, pura y simplemente. ¡Bueno, quizá no tan pura!

Charming even with all the hurdes
This book has a slow start but it does take the time to make a pretty good foundation. A good foundation of both of the M.C.'s lives both past and present. And there is quite a wide amount of difference in their growing up as kids. The author does a good job of showing that. The attraction is still there for both of them but Oliver has to take things slowly and carefully because Mei's trust in men has been damaged. There is also a wide divide standing between them not only because of their differences in culture but because Mei's dad hates Oliver's family. Mei has fought to be independent but she also doesn't want to hurt her mother and father either. Her parents are still old world China in their ways and have been pretty inflexible about it. And add into all of that the fact that Mei's mother is pretty sick too. That's quite a few hurdles. Well, I've said quite a bit about Mei and now it's Oliver (Ollie's) turn. He's kind, tender, and he's protective of those he loves. He's also skilled as an airplane engineer and always there to help family and friends. Add to that he is handsome and a lot taller than he was in school, where he got bullied a lot for being a short nerd. He also treats Mei like the precious treasure that she is. Note to Mei- open your eyes girl, he's perfect for you! There were good supporting people in the story, mainly from Oliver's side both family and friends. I liked the Epilogue and found the story charming even though a few times it felt a bit slowed down. Part of that could have been because the author was so good with detailed settings. Speaking of detailed settings, the sexual scenes were both tender and detailed. As a side note there were a few things in the book that I was not familiar with. Like the, Pohutukawa trees. But the story made me curious enough to look them up. So I added the picture here on my review too. I voluntarily read a ARC of this book and this is my honest thoughts about it.

SUMMER SPICE is a part of a series but can be read as a standalone with a HEA - you will not feel lost as things are gently explained in thoughts and dialogue as the story goes on. The hero, Ollie, 30, a pilot and engineer is a big sexy guy with a lot going for him. He has his issues from childhood, being bullied and worse, he was not liked by his childhood love's father. He was attracted to Meifeng in elementary school but whenever he tried to be friends her father totally forbid it. He plans to find her and pursue her as an adult. Unfortunately she is living with a boyfriend.

Mei is Chinese. She was born in New Zealand to parents that fled China before their children were born but they stick to the old rules and beliefs of their country. Mei longs to be able to chose her own way but her father keeps a strict hand on her neck. Her brothers married Chinese girls and even though they are not happy they did as they were told. Mei plans to remain single rather than marry a "nice Chinese boy".

Ollie has returned to the family's new beach house to get it ready for the first visitors. He is to receive all the furniture and get it put together and placed. The old house that was built generations ago was falling apart when the family decided to tear it down and build a bigger nicer home for the whole family. They have spared no expense. When Ollie pulls his plane into the hanger he is met by his cousin and a stranger. As he keeps looking he realizes it is Mei. She has left her violent boyfriend and needs an escape out of the city where she cannot be followed or traced. Ollie is the perfect choice to fly her back to her home base when the week-end is over. In order to keep her hidden she will be staying with him a the beach house.

He sees this as his chance to let her know how he feels and to proceed with his plan to keep her forever. This is a very good love story. Each longing for the other but her knowing it can never be. There is a big secret that has had the two fathers feuding for years plus, he is not Chinese. There is a lot of chemistry between these two and when they get around to it, they set the sheets on fire. It is very sexy if that is a problem for you. It is an entertaining read, I loved it and I highly recommend it.

I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 2/2/19

The Heartland series by Kris Pearson is a great book about finding love and your soul mate. The love stories in the series are all written so the commoners, regular folk, can only wish that finding love were this easy and the chemistry just right. I’ve now read the Heartland and half the Wellington series and the other three book series and they’re all not only interesting told stories, but what every woman and man hope for in their lifetime.
I’m hooked on the author’s writing and love, sex telling stories. You’ll enjoy reading all of Kris Pearson’s books!

*Warning** If / when you download Summer Spice, this book will pull you in and you’ll likely put off the laundry, cleaning, and other household chores!

If you haven’t read any of Ms. Pearson's other books, you’re in for a double treat. First, this book is fabulous and it will pull you in! Secondly, you’ll now have a new author that you’ll want to put at the top of your favorites list.

If you have read any of the author’s other books, you’ll be really happy to read this book. Favorite characters from the Scarlet Bay series appear as supporting characters….it’s really nice to see familiar names / characters.

Why did I give this book 5 stars? The writing style, storyline, and characters

First of all, I am a super fan of Ms. Pearson’s writing and this book has solidified that. She weaves in realistic drama, characters who are one’s you’d like to know, and a solid story that doesn’t shy away from serious topics. The story is set in NZ and if you’re not a Kiwi you learn about the country and everyday life. I read this when I was super tired and I couldn’t put it down.

The storyline wove in several subplots into a story that made sense from multiple angles. The characters, Mei and Oliver, are multi-faceted and ones I would love to have in my world. Mei is dealing with cultural and family expectations where she has one foot in Asia and another in NZ. She fights against limitations that her parents put on her because of her gender…and brings that fight into her relationship with Oliver when he tries, with the best of intentions, to take care of her. Oliver has been in love with Mei since he was a schoolboy …. sigh! He’s buff, rich, and anxious to take advantage of the opportunity of helping Mei. He becomes singularly focused on a permanent future with Mei and, one by one, resolves the challenges in front of them, some of which are decades old and outside of their control.

Without giving too much away, this story brings sizzle, family, and friendship into a well written story.

Download this and settle in…the laundry and cleaning will wait!

I received an ARC. This is my honest review.

    Main Characters
    Oliver Wynn (Ollie)
    Meifeng Chan (Mei)

Little did Oliver Wynn (Ollie - aviation engineer from a billionaire family) realise when he volunteered to sort out the furniture at his family's new holiday home back in Scarlet Bay where he grew up, that instead of catching a wave in his down time, he would be enlisted to help a lady in distress. That lady has owned his heart since he was a teenager. They had not set eyes on each other for years until his cousin Anna's recent wedding.

Meifeng Chan (Mei - career woman, international flight attendant, gifted musician) is in a spot. Mei's family is very traditionally Chinese with specific views about who their daughter can be married to. There is a dark secret why her father will especially never allow her to be romantically involved with Oliver Wynn. Mei adores Ollie, but he doesn't know that.

Right now, though, Ollie has helped come to her rescue when she tries to escape her abusive lover, Kieran. Her petite frame never stood a chance against Kieran's bulk and drink fuelled aggression. Ollie is so angry with Kieran who has frightened Mei to the extent that she feels she can't trust a man any more. All Ollie wants to do is protect Mei but she's not allowing him to get close at all, keeping him at arms length. After all, she doesn't need anyone to look after her, does she? But Ollie wants to be able to explore a relationship with Mei, and he's not giving up easily.

Mei and Ollie temporarily take up residence in his family's holiday home in Scarlet Bay for three days. They are staying "under the radar" until all the furniture for the house arrives and then Ollie can quietly transport Mei and her belongings to his plane at the local airstrip and from there onto Wellington where she will live to be near her work base. Three days.... three long days for Mei to hold out against her wanting Ollie, three long days of reminding herself why nothing can happen because of her duty to her family's wishes. Both Ollie and Mei may tiptoe around each other, but will they manage to resist temptation?

Mei is elegantly beautiful, Ollie calls her a "vibrant rock-chick", and his Dragon Lady. Ollie is gorgeous, tall and handsome, so protective and enamoured of Mei. She believes the two of them will never be together as there are hurdles and problems she sees no solution for. Their journey is a roller coaster - Ollie often being hurt by Mei's determination to stay apart from him and Mei frustrated that she can't get him out of her mind.

Summer Spice has a delightful conclusion. There are several surprises near the end of the book, mostly good ones, some involving characters from previous books in the series. Summer Spice is Book 3 of Kris Pearson's Scarlet Bay series and is a standalone M/F romance. You will meet characters whose stories are told in Books 1 and 2 of the Scarlet Bay series but you don't need to know them to enjoy Summer Spice though I would recommend them too. Ollie and Mei's story is told from dual points of view and has a happy ending.
