    "Over windswept grass
kites form speech marks in the sky.
    Words never spoken."

It's no secret that I'm a fan of Anne Brooke's haikus. I've been reading them religiously on her blog for a few years now, so when I saw she'd published a collection of them, I was rapt. My mistake, but I didn't realise the book only contained 52 haikus (700 words), one for each Sunday in 2009. I read them in a flash and, like fine chocolate, I was left wanting more...

5.0 out of 5 stars freshly captured moments : a very enjoyable read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 27, 2016
(I'm not a haiku expert but I do know good writing when I see it.) I enjoyed reading this collection and will come back to them again as these 'captured moments' are described in fresh and original ways.

They're in 5-7-5 format and arranged by month. Subjects span: the seasons, nature, places, life. Also: people, things, mood, the tussle in the haiku-writing process, and last-but-by-no-means-least a grey dog with red mittens! They are mainly what I would call 'warm' haiku in mood.

'The English Apple' is great. Clearly one of the best, but I also enjoyed being transported to this musical moment:
    scented, we walk through
    a chorus of lavender
    like the bees, we hum

As a sketcher and people-watcher myself I also enjoyed 'seeing' :
    girl in a pink top
    and purple skirt is dancing
    amongst the fuchsias

But my favourite, because it makes us notice the everyday with a fresh eye is:
    a chaos of cracks
    dances across the pathway
    imitating life

(Luckily the ants were all off to Spain that week! :)

Many thanks for sharing them but you should have charged something -they're better than other collections I've bought. (And a contemplative picture on the cover too -would make a nice little gift in a paper edition.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Haiku Collection
Reviewed in Canada on June 26, 2017
For the most part, I enjoyed the poems in this collection. Evocative and original. Loved the cover too.

I'm taking off one star as it is there are a very limited number of poems for each month. I also didn't like a few of the poems, with darker themes.

Overall though glad I downloaded this ebook, it was worth checking out.

The haiku are expressive and honest. Following the writer through 2009 was a rewarding and inspiring read. It led me in one of my dark times to start my own haiku diary blog. What is delightful about this collection is the enduring quality, when I reread the haiku I am still moved and captivated by certain feelings that they arouse.
