This book was adorable. I loved both our boys, and their chance to reconnect after unavoidable circumstances dragged them apart, growing from what had been the closest of friends to so much more.

Really engaging and very well written. Highly recommended for a sweet contemporary romance. There are some sensitive subjects discussed, but with a light touch and only in retrospect.

Can't wait to read Diego's and Rory's books.

I was absolutely loving this until the end got unnecessarily dramatic and ridiculous. That pains me because I was mentally giving this so much credit through most of the story for resisting the urge to go over the top and going instead for a more realistic tone. The third act machinations were a disappointment, but didn't ruin the whole story for me.

Caleb and Julien were written in a way that really worked for me. They had a plausible history, took an implausible trope and spent the time needed to fall in love through the plot devices in a way that worked. That time take was one of the things I applauded the author for early on, because others might have taken childhood besties separated by an evil father reunite as adults to spite said father and instantly fall in love upon seeing each other again. The way it actually built up in the story was beautiful and I loved it.

Also, have to say that this cover model is a perfect representation of Julien. No idea if the author had that image first and wrote Julien to fit that look or was able to find such a perfect image for their character. I rarely pay much attention to whether a cover actually matches the content, but that model became Julien in my head the second I read the description of Julien's haircut.

Delightful and engaging love story that has all the feels for me! I just so enjoyed the story-line because it was creative yet felt authentic to me. Best friends in childhood who lose contact and then necessity brings them together as adults. I really connected with the MC's in this plot, they are multi-dimensional and likable. The writing flowed and the plot was was well laid-out.

Julien and Caleb's connection and attraction sets the stage for a wonderful journey into their developing relationship. They communicate pretty well and act age appropriately which i really like. Their is some angst, but it feels like it fits and the 'bad guys' play their role well.

There were some really beautiful moments between Julien and Caleb that you will enjoy and will leave a beautiful memory of this story in your mind. I loved the supporting characters and am looking forward to hopefully seeing some stories about the men from Miami.

This was a an easy read, entertaining, nicely written. The marriage of convenience trope is one of my favorites, but I prefer more steam, genuine attraction, and less angst.

I love DJ's books and I loved the story of Caleb and Julian, but the slow burn was a little to slow for me, lol. I was getting frustrated, wanted then to hook up, lol. Once they were together, everything blossomed. What a great couple.

This story has it all. There are emotional highs, and lows, a bit of angst. There's discovery of who you are and who you have always been. The characters go through loss, fear, anger. There are parts with humor and laughter, loving and caring, as well. It has all the feels. There are characters you love from the start, like Julien and Caleb. Ones you hate, I'll let you build your own hate for them. you'll know who they are. Then, there are the rest of the characters, that pull you in as well.

This is a well written, wonderful to read story. This author writes stories that I always enjoy. I can't wait for the next book.

I loved the fact that the two main characters communicated with each other, slowly building trust and love. It's nice to read a story where the conflict or angst doesn't come from a place of miscommunication or poor assumptions...I have to admit I was mildly distracted for a bit by the authors discription of champagne as 'sweet' but it passed quick and didn't pop up again. I definitely recommend giving this story a go.

I loved this book!! Seeing Caleb and Julien take their first tentative steps into a relationship rather than a simple business agreement was so satisfying and sweet. The characters were well developed and the writing was excellent. I highly recommend this book, especially if you love fake relationship/marriage of convenience stories!

4.0 out of 5 stars Learning to love
Reviewed in Canada on January 26, 2020
This was a very well done slow burn romance book. It starts with a contract and a memory of friendship but with time, patience, hope, and growing love it becomes so much more.

There is a little bit of oddness in this whole thing that is never quite explained and is genuinely odd. Caleb and his mother are in debt, their private resort island in danger of going under. But the debt is from a loan by a very rich man, a man who used to be a close family friend. The debt can be entirely excused if Caleb simply marries one of the man's children. This was an odd clause to include which sets up the whole premise of the story, and it is something that I would have loved to have further explored. So Caleb needs to marry to settle this debt or else lose the island. But should he marry the girl he remembers from childhood, the one he knows he doesn't love and worries about hurting? Nope. He decides to stick it to the man and marry his son Julien instead. Not that this makes things any easier.

Julien and Caleb were once good friends. They were inseparable as young boys and loved hanging out. As they grew older Caleb went to a boarding school which had them seeing each other less. So when Julien was kicked out for being gay Caleb didn't find out until later and then Julien didn't want to be found. But this old friendship gave them a base to work from. It also gave them a common enemy as there is no love lost for Julien's father by either of them and using a marriage to get out of debt seems like a good deal to each of them.

There is a slow burn and lots of discovery between these two. Not all sexual discovery either. It takes time to figure out who they are as grown men, talking and rediscovering what has happened in their lives. This also brings them to know what hurts have happened in their past and what is going on now. Julien slowly learns that not everyone will betray him. Caleb gets to learn that having a love doesn't mean giving up the work he loves. Each of them has to grow and this slowly blossoms into what could be a real relationship if they let it.

A beautiful story that did not force the ties or the growing connection between the men. It builds a complete life of possibilities that are easy to imagine and a love that is easy to see. Great story!

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly refreshing take on an old trope
Reviewed in Australia on October 18, 2020
    Contains mild spoilers

I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy Surprise Groom as the trope is quite familiar, however I found the story to be sweet, refreshing in it's openness and extremely satisfying in the inevitable downfall of the nemisis (who is just the right side of over the top - the character is really well done actually, not too ridiculously bad but still bad enough to make you extremely satisfied when they get bested).
Julien and Caleb are lovely together, and watching Julien's prickly exterior give to Caleb's steadfast, gentle nature is the reason we love romance so much.
