It’s that difference between you and the end of the line, and that one thing that keeps you from slipping over the edge forever. Deep down, when faced with impossible odds, we find a way. A way to keep moving. A way to overcome. Whether death is a disease or a storm, an addiction, or a psychotic killer, or sometimes even our own mind, human beings find a way. We are resilient. We are strong. We are survivors. Even in death, we carry on.
Here are sixteen stories of survival.

About the authors
Kenneth W. Cain is an author of horror and dark fiction, and a Splatterpunk Award nominated freelance editor. He is also the publisher and editor-in-chief at Crystal Lake: Torrid Waters. Cain is an Active member of the HWA and a Full member of the SFWA. To date, he has had over one hundred short stories and thirteen novels/novellas, as well as a handful each of nonfiction pieces, books for children, and poems released by many great publishers such as Crystal Lake Publishing, JournalStone, and Cemetery Gates Media. He has also edited ten anthologies, with a new one coming in 2024. Cain suffers from chronic pain, and as such, likes to keep busy. He lives in Chester County PA with his family and two furbabies, Butterbean and Bodhi. His full publishing history is available on his website.
If it screams, squelches, or bleeds, Kristin Dearborn has probably written about it. She revels in comments like “But you look so normal…how do you come up with that stuff?” A life-long New Englander, she aspires to the footsteps of the local masters, Messrs. King and Lovecraft. When not writing or rotting her brain with cheesy horror flicks (preferably creature features!) she can be found scaling rock cliffs, zipping around Vermont on a motorcycle, or gallivanting around the globe.
Gwendolyn Kiste is the three-time Bram Stoker Award-winning author of The Rust Maidens, Reluctant Immortals, Boneset & Feathers, and Pretty Marys All in a Row, among others. Her short fiction and nonfiction have appeared in outlets including Lit Hub, Nightmare, Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy, Vastarien, Tor Nightfire, Titan Books, and The Dark. She's a Lambda Literary Award finalist, and her fiction has also received the This Is Horror award for Novel of the Year as well as nominations for the Premios Kelvin and Ignotus awards. Originally from Ohio, she now resides on an abandoned horse farm outside of Pittsburgh with her husband, their excitable calico cat, and not nearly enough ghosts. Find her online at gwendolynkiste.com
Chad has written for Famous Monsters of Filmland, Rue Morgue, Cemetery Dance, and Scream magazine. He's had dozens of short stories published, and some of his books include: OF FOSTER HOMES & FLIES, STIRRING THE SHEETS, THE PALE WHITE, SKULLFACE BOY, THE NEON OWL and OUT BEHIND THE BARN co-written with John Boden. Lutzke's work has been praised by authors Jack Ketchum, Richard Chizmar, Joe Lansdale, Stephen Graham Jones and his own mother.
He can be found lurking the internet at www.chadlutzke.com
Somer Canon lives in Eastern PA with her husband, two sons, and five cats. Her preferred escape has always been reading and writing and horror has always been the hook that catches her attention best. Feel free to find her on social media and never fear, she's only scary when she's hungry!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2020Format: PaperbackWow! This collection is simply incredible! A lot of these authors were firsts for me and I’m not sure how they’ve slipped past my radar. Some of the stand out stories to me were Into The Night by Hunter Shea, Sick Burn by Somer Canon, Culling the Pigs by Chad Lutzke, and Discussions Concerning the Ingestion of Living Insects. I was gifted an ARC from the publisher but I also went ahead an order an ebook copy because I am all for supporting a good cause! I highly recommend this anthology to anyone who likes a good collection of dark horror stories. It’s also a great way to check out an author’s style that may be new to you. Thanks to Alien Agenda Publishing for the ARC and I hope you’ll consider picking up this charity anthology for yourself!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2021Format: Kindle“There was no liberation in war. You had to track and fight, not run and hide. Cowards.”
Survival is our most basic instinct. To live another day. To perpetuate and create a legacy for posterity. To stave off that final day for as long as possible. This anthology is a collection of 16 terrors in the form of death and disease, natural disasters, addiction, psychotic killers, our own mind, all trying to end us a little too early. What would you do to survive?
Boy, have I been reading a plethora of anthologies as of late. And I must say, I’ve become quite the fan. I wake up early before work, sit with a cup of coffee, and read a story or two about death and destruction. Truly the perfect morning. This is the most recent anthology to have accompanied my routine and I enjoyed its desperation as a great marker to my day. Some stories are straight forward and wild, others are more experimental and mind blowing. I like that you get to see what each author’s perception of survival means. It made me wonder what would mine be.
Proceeds from this book go to the American Indian College Fund, established to help the American Indian community thrive through education. Are you looking to be charitable AND pick up a great new read? Well, look no further.
