Sweet Mercy (Empire Nightclub Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 7,576 ratings

From internationally bestselling author K.A. Tucker comes the dark and steamy Empire Nightclub series.

One visit to my father in prison—convicted for a murder he didn’t commit—and I’ve attracted the attention of the last man I’d ever want knowing that I exist.

Gabriel Easton.

Son of an infamous crime boss. Deplorable womanizer. Scoundrel to the core.

Worse, he has figured out how desperate I am to protect my father from brutality behind bars. He has the power to grant that protection, and he has offered it … for a price.

I'll do anything for my father, including agree to Gabriel's cruel game. But I won't comply with his every whim and wish.

Unfortunately for me, I think my loathing for him is what he’s enjoying most.

That's fine. By the time I’m through with him, he’ll be crying my name.

Mercy.

Mercy mercy mercy
Sweet Mercy is the first book in the Empire Nightclub series. This is my first book by K.A. Tucker and I reviewed this as an audio bookGabriel locks his sights on Mercy while visiting his father in prison, his father is a bad man, the whole prison seems to be very lax when it comes to him, they simply turn their head. Mercy is also visiting her father who was just put in.Mercy is held up from seeing her father the next week so Gabriel can be there and he has that "power" but when Mercy sees her dad she is upset that he's been in a fight,Gabriel propositions Mercy under the premise that he has the power to protect her father. She eventually accepts the deal that involves Mercy staying at Gabriel's house, sleeping in his bed, for a week. It sounds like a dark read. At home Gabriel is a lot more kind than I expected- she's free to do whatever at the house and still work etc.Things heat up and Gabriel decides he needs her for more then a week so he offers up a lawyer to appeal her fathers case if she stays longer and she agrees but wants to make sure he's not deep into the bad things his father does so she asks and he lies to her. He's been wanting out and trying to plan it safely but now he's trying to be done right here right now. That's where book one ends. Not a super bad cliffy but I'm invested enough to download book 2 and see how bad lying will bite him later!K.A. Tucker writes beautifully and I'm excited to continue! A lot of the prison scenes were spot on (I used to work at a prison) then the inner dialogue for Mercy was really good- I liked seeing her struggle on the inside but still hold her chin high and keep going!!!

What can I say…this series is absolute fire! It was very difficult to rate each book separately as you need each one to understand the full story.
Each book took you through all of the feels: anger, exhilarating anxiety, angst, drama, smiling; everything!
And the steamy spice factor was a bonus!
Books 1 and 2 were such an awesome build up. I couldn’t put either book down until I finished. They were so exciting. Book 3 slowed down a bit, but it was necessary as this book was the one where things started to change and differ stories unfolded. This one had the specifics and details. I will admit Book 4 dragged on a bit for me and I found myself taking breaks from reading this one or skimming parts because it was too much detail and I was just anxious to see how everything turned out. But I would not knock a star for this because it was just a me thing.
I also would’ve liked to have seen a little more of the ending play out in how they told her dad, how their life was as a married couple, etc. Definitely would’ve like to have read how things turned out with the FBI. I doubt they just dropped everything and even anything about does Caleb ever stop the party lifestyle. The Epilogue tells a bit that I won’t spoil, but I would want more information. Also the follow on her friend M would’ve been interesting as well. Again, this isn’t enough to take anything away from the overall writing quality, character development, storytelling, etc. it’s just my preference and own personal additional interest.
Overall, just an absolutely fantastic series that I enjoyed thoroughly. And yes, I found myself rooting for the “bad” guys halfway through. It was that good, especially the way the characters became so relatable.

First, let me start by saying that this book isn't a standalone with Book 1 leaving things up in the air. There's not a cliffhanger, as such, but Mercy and Gabriel's story isn't finished. Gabriel sets eyes on Mercy while visiting his father in prison. She's also visiting her father and upset because it appears he's been in a fight. Seeing an opportunity to manipulate the situation (which is a bit weird because he never really even tried to ask her out), Gabriel propositions Mercy under the premise that he has the power to protect her father on the inside. She eventually accepts and the rest of the story revolves around the dynamics between the two as the deal involves Mercy staying at Gabriel's house, sleeping in his bed, for a week. It sounds like a dark read but it really wasn't - more on this below.

I found the book description a little misleading. Firstly, her father was convicted of a crime that he absolutely did commit. It was a justifiable murder and he got a rotten deal as the result of a terrible lawyer and being poor, but he did actually kill someone to protect his daughter. Secondly, Gabriel is described as being a pretentious liar. I've got no idea why because there wasn't lying through the story. Thirdly, the blurb gives the impression Mercy is a prisoner in Gabriel's house - she's not. She's free to go to work and classes and their deal is only for a week, so I think the author took a bit of creative license with her description. Finally, there was no ruthless spark from Gabriel apart from him trying to get her to agree to live with him for a week. He didn't take advantage of her at all and was mostly pretty sweet and kind to Mercy. She offered herself to him and he turned her down as he wouldn't sleep with her unless she was willing. This stopped it from being an overly dark read for me, but it was still enjoyable.

There's not a lot of action between Mercy and Gabriel until 80% or so, but the book has plenty of gratuitous sex scenes due to a promiscuous brother and mutual friends that get up to all kinds of activities at their shared mansion. Their relationship is pretty much built on sexual tension as they both want each other but Mercy tries not to give in. Usually I hate it when the heroine is so in lust with her 'captor' that she forgives their behaviour and gives into them but the author did a good job of making their relationship pretty mutual apart from the circumstances that led to Mercy staying with Gabriel. She was a pretty strong character and he didn't move heavily into jerk territory so it worked.

Gabriel was dirty talking, made no apologies for wanting Mercy and was jealous and possessive (but not excessively so). I'll warn readers, though, that Gabriel is with at least one other woman after meeting Mercy. They weren't together so it didn't bother me but I know some people prefer to avoid this. Some of the tension between the two was pretty hot and the writing was solid throughout the book. I took a star off because of the book description and due to the fact that there was quite a bit of repetition in the book, mainly around Mercy's constant pondering about Gabriel's family's criminal lifestyle. There was a lot of 'I'm so attracted to him but I can't be because his father is an infamous crime boss and they possibly sell drugs and are morally corrupt and really rich so there could never be anything serious between us'. This came up a lot and was laid on a bit thick.

The book finishes just after 90% with an excerpt from the next book but the story was a decent length. While it wasn't a conventional hostage situation, it was an entertaining read and I enjoyed the relationship between Gabriel and Mercy. I'll be continuing on with the next book.

That’s the best Maria Romance series I’ve read or listened, and believe me, I’ve read dozens of them. Would love to watch a Netflix show based on these books, the story is so vivid, I easily imagined the plot as if it was being played on a big screen. Bravo, author!

I understand this is a series, but I was so disappointed with the story arch and the way everything ended so abruptly. I am invested in the series and will obviously be moving to book #2, but felt this one was cut short for sure.

I was really hoping this would be more of a standalone, guess not.
    Anyway, spicy lots of spice.
    and a story!
Its a bit OTT, but whatever, mafia prison story, I wasn't expecting it to be run of the mill.
Ill definitely read the next book.

A few points. Glocks do not have an outer safety. It is a tiny switch/button under the trigger that keeps it from firing unless there is a finger pull. Not a huge deal, but worthy of note. Also, there was mention of wondering if something was real or was she not dreaming - those are the same. Again, Nora big deal, but worthy of a mention.
    All-in-All, a very captivating storyline.

Ooohhh.... I'm so in love with Gabriel and Mercy right now...

I listened to the Audiobook of this one AND MY GOODNESSS.... What a freaking experience it was feeling the tension, the burn of desire and the conflict between Gabriel and Mercy come to life with the amazing narrators of this book - Ada Sinclair and Alex Kydd were freaking amazing.

I was pulled into this book right from the start as we see Mercy visiting her father, in Prison. Mercy feels so much pain seeing her father in prison because her dad is a good man and all he did was protect his daughter never expecting what happened accidentally.

I felt for Mercy so much because visiting her father in Prison is important but she hated the way the guards leered at her and troubled her by making her wait.

The first time Gabriel sets his eyes on Mercy sets the stage for his fixation on her and I was both scared but also intrigued to see what would happen next.

Gabriel strikes a deal with Mercy, which even though is unacceptable to her at first, yet when circumstances keep on aggravating, what other option does she have left?!

I liked how Gabriel surprised me with how he beautifully treats Mercy. I liked that even though he's the son of the Bratva and has been living like not much makes a difference to him ... Yet the way he treats her... cares for her.... Oh my ...

I highly recommend you listen to the Audiobook because both the narrators make you feel all the emotions and the heat so realistically... Ahhh .. it feels like you're actually there with Gabriel and Mercy. Can't wait to dive into the follow-up book after this. Loved this one.♥️
