About the author

H.C. Helfand has been a lawyer for more than 30 years and a writer longer than she can remember. She has published essays and an acclaimed book for children, "And There Was Evening And There Was Morning." "Fee Simple Conditional" is her first novel, and the beginning volume of The Arcadia Chronicles, which tell the story of an attachment to land that transcends time. Influenced by her work and studies in the U.S. and Canada, her books weave details of place and the twists and turns of law that intertwine with human frailties and aspirations. Like her characters, she loves land and longs for Arcadia, the place of dreams.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2024H.C. Helfand has written a gorgeous novel about the redemptive nature of family in a changing world. In this third book in the author’s Arcadia series, David Armacost, her male protagonist, grapples with truths about his background that he might prefer not know. David looks to his feisty wife Abby Fischer for strength, even as she struggles to resume her ailing legal career. Readers who loved the earlier books will find much to savor here as the characters forge unusual relationships and try to reinvent their lives; those unfamiliar with Ms. Helfand’s work will have no trouble starting the series at this dramatic juncture. As always, the author introduces quirky, intriguing characters who enrich the story, including Callum Maclaren, an aging relative new to David, and Agnys DeSilva, a woman Abby once helped who reappears after playing a vital role in Abby and David’s family life. I read this riveting novel in two days because I couldn’t put it down, cheering for both the central characters and the minor ones, too. I can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s heart-warming, yes, but it’s also observant and trenchant, exploring universal truths in clear, luminous prose.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2024Having read the first two books in this series, I was anxious to read “The Right of Redemption,” by H.C. Helfand. I was not disappointed. This is another poignant novel by a gifted author. It begins with David Armacost finding an old envelope wedged in his father’s desk and this mystery is carried throughout the book as the character ponders his family’s unknown history. Meanwhile his wife, Abby Fischer, my favorite character, allows her big heart to override her logical legal brain, often leading her into trouble. This is a story of two people struggling to figure out who they are while, fortunately, able to rely on each other. Honest, passionate, and in many places, humorous, I truly enjoyed this book and can highly recommend it.
