Terra and Imperium (Duchy of Terra) Paperback – February 12, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
Powers great and greater
With Terra caught in the middle
Humanity's first colony is a project neither the Duchy of Terra nor the A!Tol Imperium can allow to fail. The planet Hope in the Alpha Centauri system has been lavished with resources and attention but when an unknown alien force attacks the system, all of that is in danger.
An ancient alien artifact is the apparent target of the attack, an artifact older than known galactic civilization. Suddenly, the backwater colony of a second-rate power is the gathering point for a confrontation of the galaxy's greatest powers.
Duchess Annette Bond might be pregnant. She might be five light years away. She might have another galactic power on her doorstep demanding she surrender their rebels who've settled on Earth.
But she speaks for both Terra and the Imperium and the galaxy will listen.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2017Excellent book, well written, good plot, good (and well foreshadowed) character development.
I would downgrade it to 4.5 stars maybe, because of some typos, but meh. It's an excellent book
If you liked the first two, get this one.
It has a focus of a couple different characters than the first two. They are, as is typical for Glynn Stewart, well written. Again, as you typically notice with his characters, they have distinct voices with distinct personalities that come out well even in a relatively short book you can read in a day or two. :) I recommend you buy. This is better than most Glynn Stewart and better than the DT1 and DT2 books but not quite up to the starship's mage book 1 and 2 plots. But close. Enjoy it! He writes well and writes fast
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2020Right off the bat I have to say that this is less of a review on one book and more of a review on four books (being books 2,3,4,5) First off I should say that I love the story's, the character's and all around settings for the Duchy of Terra series BUT (we all knew there had to be one) my issue is with the final battles in books 2,3,4,5 (no spoilers) book 1 had an interesting final battle that left you on the seat of your pant's to find out what Annette Bond was going to do and book 2 also was pretty cool as well, my issue comes into how Glynn replayed the battle from book 2 over and over and over again in that the duchy of terra has a large contingent of opponents who outnumber the total number of terras navy so the navy is ready to hold out as long as possible till SOMEONE (changes per book) comes just in time and all the navy needs to do is make the enemy blink and waste more time till the cavalry rides in to help save the day......... there is no issue with this setup in book 2 as a final battle but when it is the final battle for books 3,4, and 5 you start getting a wee bit annoyed with the repetition and by book 5 I am more than ready for a completely different ending for one of the books even something as simple as "the navy and the enemy where evenly matched but the different weapons on both sides would make all the difference as to who won"
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2017Stewart has created a "universe" with complexity, and promised more. It is interesting to see how he has used some of the storytelling ideas of Weber, to develop a storyline as enjoyable and believable. The strongest link, of course, is the main protagonist being a Duchess (!).
This third yarn has lots going, a mystery, conflict with superpowered aliens, detailed battle scenes, lots of personalities, a continuation of the diversity of a galaxy full of different species (well, part of a galaxy. Hard to tell the real extent, as hyperspace travel still seems to take days to reach nearby stars, so Arm powers and Core superpowers still need to be within perhaps a thousand or two LY of each other. One of the least considered issues. Also, this book has a number of typos, indicating hurried editing. Still, the plot flows, there are few anomalies, and it's a really good tead. Looking forward to the next trilogy.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2023If you like fleet battles with high stakes and vastly superior forces this book will be one of your favorites.
Also a lot of other good stuff, including the politics I enjoy, and we get to spend more time with more characters too which was a nice treat. The universe is a lot bigger in this one, now that the foundation has been set so the scope can expand.
Can't wait to see what happens next.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2017The series has been excellent, and I was impatiently waiting this episode. The book dives straight into the action, as a Terran Militia ship is attacked by a mysterious enemy having advanced technology, who drops shuttles on a remote part of a planet. When Terran forces engage them, the invaders suicide rather than being captured, triggering a search for whatever was worth so many lives. The answer pits Duchy of Terra forces against the oldest races in the galaxy.
After two readthroughs: The book is typically excellent in pacing and characterization, with mixes of action and dialog that blend toward the climax. Stewart widens the base of characters (he killed a lot off in the first two books) while moving the series plot along nicely, though Annette gets less page space this time around. I don't consider it a big flaw, but I found the subplot with the A!tol bigot (sorry, no spoilers!) to be a bit thin on motivation.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2023As Humanity begins to spread out and explore the surrounding systems, the first Human colony is begun with the blessings of the A!Tol Imperium. Unfortunately it appears that there's ANOTHER alien race with designs on something on that planet, and suddenly several superpowers look to be headed towards a confrontation...
Recommended, especially if you're a fan of the first two novels. The universe keeps expanding and the story continues to reveal surprises....a fine read indeed!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2017Four and a half stars. The Duchess Annette plays a strong but almost secondary role in this third book of the series. This actually works out well because it gives ample opportunity for other stars to shine. There are battles (actually just very large skirmishes) to keep the action fans satisfied. A great deal of the book actually takes time to develop the history and politics of this universe Stewart has created. He also makes time to more deeply develop several characters not the least of which is Ki!Tal.
Stewart already has plans for a fourth book. It will be interesting to see which direction he takes. This book completes an excellent trilogy (Book 1; Earth against the Imperium, Book 2; Earth enters as part of the Imperium and in Book 3; Earth becomes a vital member of the Imperium.) I won't turn my nose up at another book or three, but it will be hard to improve on this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wham Bam...
In her fifties and pregnant with twins ..The Duchess still proves she's got a heck of a lot of moxie..An excellent continuation of the previous books in the trilogy. Enough battles and nerdy stuff and a damn fine tale.

5.0 out of 5 stars On wow! Me Stewart never fails to delivera
It takes a lot to get me to review a book, and generally speaking even special offers or advanced copies won't do the job. However, I've just finished this 3rd instalment of what is currently a trilogy with little time taken for a break and despite the length and breadth of the universe that has been woven here, little has bored me.
Even with longer chunks of writing over the books, there is little time wasted on catching up readers as to who is whom, and I just love the effort that has gone into building then alien races.
Glynn Stewart has bought us a wide range range of fiction, from space opera, to supernatural police SWAT teams to who knows what else.
If you, like me, tend to shy away from the "earth invaded, one ship has to save the human race" type genre, this series should be given a try. It's well worth the effort!!!
Thanks, and being on more of this and ONSET. I can't wait.

5.0 out of 5 stars As always its everything i imagined...
The story is becoming interesting. I cannot wait for darkness beyond. In every race has it advantages but what if mankinds advantage is how human adapt and overcome adversities, what if the human race follows the doctrine of G. R. I. N. (Genetic manipulation. Information technology. Robotics. Nano technology.) Thank you once again for all your stories. All of them!
