Review

"In Tally: A Polyamorous Romance by J.M. Northup, Tally Abram is a successful lawyer but when it comes to finding love, the cards seem stacked against her. She longs for a family of her own, but time is fast running out. She has just broken off with her married lover and decides to ask the closest people in her life, her married friends Lex and Ishkode Ackerman, to help father her child. Her proposal and the events that follow uncover cracks in a seemingly solid marriage between the two men, and also unresolved issues of jealousy and confused emotions. The three friends discover that love is sometimes not enough to become parents. The law is also against them. There is only one solution but it means heartbreaking sacrifices must be made, ones that threaten to tear the friendship apart.
This is a story that will touch every emotion inside you. Tally is a wonderfully strong protagonist; she is willing to put her own needs to one side for the sake of others. Lex is a charming, witty and loving character too and the relationship between Ishkode (Kode) is beautifully relayed to the reader. The dialogue is realistic to the personality of each character. I thought the story was going to be about surrogacy and the emotional complications attached to it, but the author has cleverly woven a subplot into the story, dealing with the legalities of the trio's situation and how it does not align with the changing dynamics of the modern family structure. There are many great conflicts throughout, making the story incredibly engaging. The rights of the LGBT community to raise a family, the misconceptions around polyamory, and the confusing emotions of jealousy are all covered with sensitivity. There are some adult scenes but I feel they were appropriate and necessary to drive the story forward."

"J.M. Northup's contemporary romance novel is a warm and engrossing story about family and love. Tally's decision to make Lex a partner, and her request to Lex and Kode, come from her heart and she's willing to risk everything to make those things happen. Watching as the three friends come to terms with their relationships and establish new feelings of trust and security is a marvelous thing indeed. I especially enjoyed getting to see Lex and Kode's interactions as well as how they work to accommodate their relationship with Tally. The highlight of this book for me, however, is the dinner Tally hosts for her extended family. It's warm, magical and unforgettable. Tally: A Polyamorous Romance is most highly recommended."

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I saw the title of this book. I had never heard the term “polyamorous romance.” Yet, I didn’t look it up or look for a description. Since I’d never heard it before, I decided to let the book tell me what this meant. I have read most of this author’s books and loved them, so decided to let this one teach me.

What I found was that as in her past stories, this author knows how to describe her characters’ emotions and actions. She gets right into the characters’ hearts and minds. I won’t tell the ending of the story but in order to get to that point, this author puts her characters through some fears and hesitations and the reader experiences it all. The characters make mistakes, they learn. They heal.

In our changing times, I had not heard of this terminology nor knew what it implied. I was somewhat surprised that this author addresses a situation becoming quite common in today’s world. And she does it with finesse. Again, no spoiler here but this was an eye-opener of a story. I highly recommend any books by this author.

J.M. Northup gives the reader a glimpse into the complex emotions involved in polyamorous relationships. Her knowledge of the subject is on display as she weaves science and the emotions of her characters through the story. The tale is well conceived and written as well as apropos in modern society.

I have read and reviewed a number of books by J.M. Northup. Having read her stories before did not prepare me for this wonderful book. The story involves a number of characters, but the main three are Tally, Lex and Ishkode, or Kode. These three characters are fleshed out in the sense of you, the reader, knowing their emotions, their feelings, their desires, their fears, their ability to resolve difficulties in a non-judgmental way, and their involvement with each other in a romantic threesome. I will not tell you more of the story because to do so would spoil your read. Suffice it to say this is fast paced reading at the best. The story is modern, it is set in a locale which enhances its modernity, it is developed in a way which speaks of much research into its topic. You will have to read it to get more. But what you should do is get this book and read it as fast as you can, then go back and read it again. It is well worth the time and the effort, as well as very well worth the money.

It's bland, tropey, and the main characters go on rants inside their heads. No, gay dude, you don't need to mentally whinge about how people are dumb for thinking being gay is wrong/bad/whatever, including pausing to roll your eyes, while you get up to get yourself and your husband more wine.

TALLY: A Polyamorous Romance (Kindle Edition)
    by J.M. Northup
A short and sweet story showing the changing culture that is happening in America the LBGT community is gaining acceptance. The changing dynamics of the law throughout the land is affecting our interpretation of the legal ramifications of polyamorous relationships. It is the reliance on the law keeps people from accepting these changes. This book shows not only the legal changes that will accept polyamorous relationships but allow a realignment of our perception of family.
Tally is a strong female character that finds that her attempts to have a family has been prohibited by her inability to accept the love that is already in her life. Her best friend is the closest human to her in the world. Yet she has found endless problems in finding true love and creating the family she has always wanted. It is accepting reality that changes her life for the better.
This book in one of those first steps in understanding the change in america and how looking at love with an open mind may change your acceptance of life.

This book follows Tally Abrams and her friends. Lex Ackerman has been her best friend for most of her life. Ishkode or Kode Ackerman is Lex's husband and has cared for Tally since college. Tally and Lex have a discussion about Tally wanting the boys to be the fathers of her future baby. Being an attorney, Tally doesn't want to lose the chance of not becoming a mother.

What happens next is a beautiful love story of three fabulous people. We all know love isn't always without it's issues, but to read about what these three worked through in order to become parents with each other is almost miraculous. I guess if they all hadn't loved each for a long time, it could have been disastrous.

This book has likeable characters and will take you on a rollercoaster of mixed emotions. It also makes you realize that love is always the answer.
