TASTE: A steamy Enemy to Lovers M/M romance (London Love Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 242 ratings

Finn Christensen doesn’t do feelings. He doesn’t do relationships. When he has an itch to scratch, there are always clubs and hook-ups. Quick, dirty encounters in dark places that feed the need that brews in the pit in his stomach. He works every hour of the day as the front office manager for the Clouds Westminster Hotel in central London. He’s a good boss, and he knows his shit.
Then Mark Quinton swans in like he owns the bloody place, and Finn’s carefully managed world starts to fall apart.

Mark Quinton is impulsive and stupid and childish. He’s the last person in the world who should be allowed to run the food and beverage department at the Clouds Westminster, however many brilliant ideas he has and somehow miraculously pulls off. He needs…something. He needs Finn Christensen.

It’s a match made in hell. A recipe for disaster. There will be a bloodbath one day. They both know that. Everyone knows.

TASTE is the second book in the London Love series, following extraordinary ordinary couples living real fairy-tales in the city of London. TASTE is a hurt comfort, enemy to lovers romance set behind the scenes in a busy inner city business hotel.

Trigger-warnings for off page mentions of domestic violence, depression, kleptomania, ADHD and culinary crimes involving cheese. HEA.

What a beautiful story with wonderfully human and complex and unique characters. Love the hotel setting and all the stories that go with it. And Mark and Finn will stay with me. Loved it!

This is an enemies-to-lovers romance, for real. These aren’t two people who just snipe at each other to mask attraction-- there’s a bit of that, but there are really complicated emotions, a ton of backstory that only one of them initially knows, and a lot, and I do mean a lot, of really hurtful actions, mostly from Finn. Mark can be immature and playful in thoughtless ways. Finn can be a vindictive piece of work, and his default is to lash out at anyone getting close to him: to do damage so he can’t be damaged in return. Finn has plenty of demons to work through: the choices he’s made to protect himself from his past have come at the expense of himself and anyone pulled into his orbit. I’m not going to lie, even as I empathize with him in theory I spent a fair amount of time hating him in practice for some of the things he did to Mark. They’re both complicated, they both have baggage, but it’s Finn who weaponizes his baggage for so long that by the time he’s willing to put it down, I didn’t entirely trust him to do it. Luckily, however, Mark has the necessary patience and faith to see things through. I liked that they clearly both have work to put in, but eventually they’re willing to do it, and I liked that nothing about their relationship is effortless or easy, because it makes the value they place on it so much more powerful.

I also loved the supporting characters: Mabel is a key part of the story and an absolutely fabulous person. The rest of the hotel staff are interesting, as are many of the guests (not all of the guests are interesting in a good way, but still, interesting). You can definitely see that the hospitality industry is one the author knows well, and seems to hold a deep affection for, although there are definitely no rose colored glasses either. The last few chapters make all of the angst and anger of their predecessors worthwhile, and while the ending might seem a bit abrupt, even if we don’t get the exact details of the event it’s building to, the happily ever after for Finn and Mark is clearly a done deal, and that’s honestly what both of them need most. Tl;dr: intense, emotional, a romance that is about character development, healing, and growth.

Not long ago, I saw a recommendation request for a “real enemies-to-lovers” romance in one of my book groups. The poster noted that they wanted a book where an intense rivalry was palpable, not just one that was easily brushed aside. As a fan of the trope, I read through the thread, adding some titles to my own to-be-read list and recommending my favorite. I thought a lot about that request while reading Taste because it was precisely what the reader was looking for—a true enemies-to-lovers romance where outright hostility turns to love.

I love books featuring character redemptions, so I was intrigued by the idea of coworkers and enemies going toe-to-toe only to discover something more. Unfortunately, some aspects in Taste never really worked for me. I liked both Finn and Mark for the most part and I very much appreciated their depth and development. However, I struggled with some of the abrasive, hurtful behavior they hurled at one another, and I did not recover from it in time to appreciate their blooming romance fully.

Although I truly believed both men deserved love and a happily-ever-after and I liked the idea of having main characters who had readily apparent faults they were choosing to work on, I think I needed more time with these characters. I wanted a chance to see their changed approach to one another take root before they launched into a relationship. Unfortunately, in Taste things between Mark and Finn seemed to change from hate to love rather quickly and I simply didn’t have time to adjust my feelings for them.

While reading Taste I realized that though I like volatile chemistry in my enemies-to-lovers romances, I have a difficult time seeing past mean characters, even if they have a reason for their behavior. Regardless, of my own connection with this couple, I cannot deny that Taste is a well-written, carefully crafted story featuring characters with a large amount of depth. The surprise revelations and history Finn and Mark shared worked quite well and added an interesting complexity to the storyline. For those readers craving a “real” enemies-to-lovers romance that isn’t watered down, Taste has all the legitimate and palpable animosity one could hope for.

This book goes beyond shallow and descriptive narrative typical for the genre. All the characters are well defined, story and emotions are described and developed in a way that keeps the attention of the reader from start to the end. Excellent writing, an interesting and dynamic story along with captivating characters makes this book an excellent and worthy read.

** spoiler alert ** Wow. Really great story. Mark and Finn are quite the pair. The shared history, the pain of it, makes you just want to give them both a hug. Then bang their heads together and get over themselves! Finn is the worst- Mark has issues that he's trying to overcome.
Finn is a complicated character. He's worked so hard to prove himself in the world away from the farm. The hours of work he's put in, the divorce, the wall he puts up between himself and the world all make him hard, as it was pointed out to him. He's so closed off that no one can get close.
Mark is more of an open book, even though he has such a significant issue with depression. He's very self aware when it comes to that. He's very cognizant of the signs and effects of a deep dive.
It's interesting that though they're two completely different men, they both have the skill of seeing when they're needed at work, and jumping in with just what will fix the situation.
At any rate, it's a good, easy to read book that I enjoyed quite a bit.

I had trouble connecting with this book, at first, because there are too many inner monologues and a very few dialogues between the MCs, it seemed to me that I was missing something. I adore Sophia Soames and her writing, but this was not a very easy reading.

Finn is uptight, closed off, always by himself, keeping people at distance; it seems he doesn't have friends; Mark is impulsive, way too exuberant, the life of the party, he keeps making dumb decisions and he doesn't respect boundaries (he also fights depression and that part was very realistic).
Finn and Mark hate each other, but also like each other very much and have a strong sexual connection, but while Mark was brave, asking for more, Finn kept rejecting him. That was very frustrating, I couldn't understand why Finn was so adamant to hate Mark.

Then, there's the plot twist! It's so incredible, I wasn't expecting that at all! And it made all clear, suddenly Finn's behaviour made so much sense.

I didn't like Mabel's choice to keep secrets, it created too much drama around Mark who's always been supportive and kind with them. Their behaviour contribuited to hurt Mark.

I loved that Mark decided to listen to Finn's explanations and that, after all the revelations, he took his time to absorb the truth and consider if he and Finn could have a future together. I also loved that, when they got together, things weren't instantly resolved but they had to work for their happiness. Mark handled Finn's ex husband situation very well and he set the necessary boundaries.

The epilogue is beautiful and I get the author's choice to not explain everything. They're happy and it's all that matters.

One last thing: Ben is amazing and the way he takes care of Mark when he has his depressive episodes was beautiful and made me cry. I cannot wait to read his book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Story

Hurt/Comfort to the max. Sweet with heat. Hard won HEA for these 2 mc’s. The back/forth was a little hard to handle but it felt so real, the pain and history that contributed to it. I love how the history between them unfolded a bit at a time, the reader realizing that there was more going on than what we had so far learned. And the liberation that came once Finn allowed himself to be fully vulnerable. Beautifully told, as I’ve come to expect from this author.
Minor complaint: the editing in this book needs a going over. Plenty of missed words. Some of the dialogue not divided up properly to indicate who is speaking. And personally, I appreciate that each viewpoint is clearly indicated at the start of each chapter, it’s really well done, but it’d be nice to have each chapter labeled.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fantastic read

One of the reasons I never miss a Sophia Soames new release is that, without fail, they make me feel really 'gushy' and this was no exception.

Mark and Finn battled for their HEA and some of the 'goings on' within the walls of the hotel are eye opening and really intriguing, but such blinking hard work, a bit like the duck analogy.... effortless and graceful above water but paddling like mad below the surface.

As with most of Ms Soames' offerings, I laughed, cried, questioned and angsted my way quickly through the novel (as I said, all the feels) but this wasn't my favorite of her books and I really can't put my finger on why.

It's still very much a 5 star read and if you're like me and won't even contemplate a novel without the promise of a HEA, then rest assured you'll get your ending but I think Sophia knew this one would cause a few 'ripples' in the ending department with her offer in the thank you note at the end of the book to feel free to shout.... So I guess this is me shouting that I wanted that particular loose end (no spoilers here!) fleshed out on the paper.

Well done Sophia Soames, I'm still tossing it around in my head days after the initial read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Explosive, emotional and romantic love
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 6, 2024
I liked this story, it was very emotional, tense and painful at times. I even shed a few tears a couple of times.

I loved Mark and Finn's characters - the story was more powerful because of their opposing personalities. They both had some past trauma from their childhood and their back stories were sad and heartbreaking. To begin with they constantly clashed with each other, each one retaliating against the other. This caused a lot of arguments between them and disruption in the hotel. But despite all these disagreements Mark and Finn just couldn't resist the attraction between them. Their chemistry was scorching and the passion explosive.

The other staff in the hotel added depth to the story and Mark's colleagues were very supportive when he was suffering. I wasn't keen on Mabel's part in the story and I found it confusing when "they" and "them" were used as I wasn't always sure at the start of the sentence if these words were referring to one or more people. I would have been happier if Mabel was there for a while at the start of the story but not throughout. Also, there were many times including at the start of every chapter, where I wasn't sure who was speaking until I read a whole paragraph.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings on the characters
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 16, 2024
This is a slightly chaotic feeling book. The characters are all supposed to be brilliant and have wonderfully supportive staff and simultaneously act like teenagers and have staff that catalogue their every move. Thus is also reflected in how their mental health issues are dealt with as they are both ignored in the workplace and yet cause lots of time off to be taken. I like the 2 main characters despite their inability to communicate, but really struggled with Mabel. Mabel is gender fluid which is well portrayed and the issue of dead naming is done well, however being gender fluid is not an excuse for being selfish and cruel and Mabel is both. There are multiple trigger warnings in this book, but strangely not one for the mental and emotional abuse which Mabel inflicts both in the past and during this book.
