“In a world where there is already enough oppression and where each of us strives to be valued for who we are, being unique and being yourself shouldn’t be difficult as a writer.” (Loc. 368)

Author Devika Fernando’s booklet "Why Go Indie?: 6 Reasons for Self-Publishing," is the first volume in the "Writer's Toolkit" series; a project launched by the authors from The Book Club. This series is aimed at aspiring authors who may consider self-publishing their books or traditionally published authors who want to try the other route. Besides the introduction written by Rubina Ramesh and Devika Fernando’s bio, this booklet comprises of two chapters divided into smaller subchapters, a conclusion, a brief account of Devika’s early writing career and a blurb for the next book in the series.

In the introduction, Author Rubina Ramesh, the co-founder of The Book Club community, praises Devika Fernando for her hard work, knowledge about the publishing industry, but also for her kindness and honesty. Then she states a big truth about the bumpy road to success: “Indie publishing might seem very easy to you all. But not all authors see even the last page of the bestselling list. Not everyone sees more than 20k pages read from their book.” (Loc. 39)

In case you’re undecisive whether to go indie or not, Devika has your back because she explains how self-publishing has boomed in recent years and analyses which are the main reasons a writer may opt to become independent. Maybe they had bad experiences with traditional publishing, were rejected too many times, their previous books went out of print, etc. Though the indie path seems to be a gift sent from above, Devika warns that it implies discipline, dedication and hard work in order to build a career. This route does not suit everyone because you have to learn the necessary skills, besides writing, to stand out from your competitors. That’s why you should do a thorough research before you take this leap of faith.

“Many authors view their books as an integral part of themselves and treat it almost like a child. As such, they have a right to be involved in all publishing steps. In this regard, full control ties in with flexibility and freedom.” ( Loc. 328)

The second chapter of this guide is a concise overview of the six solid reasons why you should consider going the indie route. The six Fs of self-publishing are: Flexibility, Fair Royalties, Faster Results, Fear No Rejection, Full Control and Freedom of Expression. Bear in mind that the quality of the books and your success are your responsibility because you have the final say. You can seek help though from fellow authors editors or cover designers whenever you encounter an issue.

The conclusion comprises of a few pieces of advice for writers such as to be well-informed about self-publishing, reach out to other authors who took this route and analyse your own reasons for choosing to go indie. Last but not least, you can also read a chapter about how Devika Fernando began her writing career.

In short, this booklet was insightful, concise, well-written, documented and damn convincing. If you gravitate towards self-publishing your books, then give "Why Go Indie?" a try!

This book is vwry much geared towards new authors who are unsure about self publishing. It's definitely a bit biased towards self publishing in lieu of traditional publishing. That said there is good info about the pros of self publishing.

First of all, a big THANK YOU to The Book Club and the authors who have contributed to this idea of writing the toolkits. As it puts to rest so many doubts and queries which arises in mind of any future budding authors and are clueless about where to go and whom to ask.

Why Go Indie? is the first book of the series and is written by none other than Devika Fernando who is a well-known Indie author herself.

Devika has written beautifully the pros and cons of a traditionally published book through a publication house and also about self-publication i.e. being an Indie author. She has dealt with each and every struggle or hurdle that an author faces when one goes to publish his/her work through an agent/publication house.

Also, the benefits and advantages of self-publication and how to become an Indie Author is also dealt with and explained wonderfully.

Thank you, Rubina Ramesh, for this brainwave and thanks to all the contributing authors who have put forth their views and their experiences which will provide as a guiding light to all current and upcoming authors.

So, if you want to publish your book, go buy these toolkits and read to get an in-depth knowledge of self-publication.
