Many years in the past a mage committed the great crime of telling humans how to enslave magical beings. After seeing what great harm he has caused he now devotes his energy to righting that wrong, even at the expense of the health and lives of others. Llyris, a handler of a magical being used to transport travelers from place to place, comes in contact with an old healer, Viden Misk, who needs a team to find a special volumn to heal the son of a wealthy merchant. Llyris moved the team of knights, clerics, attendants and baggage to an area near the place believed to hold the volumn and the adventure begins. Many secrets come to light and I look forward to diving into the next book for more adventure. These were interesting characters and I would like to see what happens next.

Immediately Engaging. Compelling Plot and Characters. Pulled Me Out of my Reader’s Slump.
I loved this book and I could not put it down! Well-written and engaging on every level; Mr Blake’s characters were interesting and well rounded, and I was delightfully surprised to see that our hero is an intelligent, thoughtful, female handler (a person who controls humanish, partially magic creatures) that the author skillfully navigates in a way that few male writers are capable. In fact, all three of his major female characters are interesting, have backgrounds and futures well beyond romance, and are each independent and skilled in their own rights. Bruce Blake has written a hell of a book and I am eagerly awaiting the sequel!
I bought a paper copy and the quality is fantastic! Exactly the right size with soft, matte cover. Call me old school but I particularly appreciated the inclusion of a list of characters at the end.
