The Cornerstone (The Walsh Series Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 2,472 ratings

Shannon Walsh is the boss.

She put herself back together again after enduring traumas no one should have to face, and now she’s too strong and secure to let anything slow her down.

That includes an arrogant Navy SEAL who gives her two of the wildest nights of her life. But those nights soon turn into stolen weekends and secret holidays, and then the moments begin to matter more than the hot nights.

But Shannon’s priorities are her family and their historic preservation architecture firm. She can’t—and won’t—sacrifice any piece of that for anyone.

Will Halsted has never walked away from a challenge.

After years spent in the Special Forces, his entire life is classified. Where he’s been, what he’s seen, what he’s done. There is no mission too dangerous.

Falling for a fierce, feisty redhead is the last thing he expected from a wedding weekend hookup but fighting it is like swimming against a riptide.

Every minute is a glorious power struggle with Shannon Walsh but her life and her family are in Boston, and nothing will ever change that.

Not even falling in love.

CW: history of emotional and sexual abuse by a parent; parent loss; estranged family member; caring for a side character with chronic illness; reference to a main character injured during active duty military service; brief reference to a side character who experienced homelessness; brief reference to being forced out of the home as a teenager

Meet Shannon Walsh. She's the grease that makes the gears turn at Walsh Associates, and then some. She's witty, no-nonsense, sharp as a tack, kicks ass and takes names. She's the poster child for bad online dating, but at least she can laugh about it.

Shannon is best friends with her brothers and she does everything for them possible, in both their professional world and personal lives. Everything from filing their taxes and ordering their dry cleaning to making doctor appointments and meticulously planning events. She finds that she's settling but doesn't know what to about it or how to fix it.

During her brother Matt's wedding, Shannon's been assigned by the bride to keep her older and overly protective Navy SEAL brother, Will, occupied and distracted so he doesn't kill Matt. Their personalities clash like oil and vinegar but there's something hidden beneath the surface of their argumentative banter.

If Shannon thinks she can write off the incredible night spent with Will Halsted as a one-night stand, she's horribly mistaken.

Life thrusts the two together again, slightly unexpectedly, but again, their chemistry bubbles and leaves them both with desire that has been unmatched.

Through the conveniences of technology, Shannon and Will are able to stay in touch, even when he's stationed around the world for top-secret "commando" missions and their "scheduled sex" relationship takes on a life of its own with feelings, emotions, triggers and broken promises.

Just know this: hot. So hot. So much hotness.

I can't write any spoilers because it goes against all I love about writing reviews. I've been a fan of Kate Canterbary since book 1 and fall in love with this crazy and perfectly flawed family with each new release. There's a beauty in her characters that is complete relatable and familiar, yet achingly chilled and broken. She delivers another fabulous story with moments that literally made me laugh out loud, times when I rolled my eyes and pages when I couldn't stop smiling. And of course, more is revealed about the brewing hatred toward Angus, the uber a-hole of a father who plays such a crucial role in this series...

If this review hasn't convinced you to read this book (along with all of Kate's other books), I don't know what will.

I have enjoyed each installment in The Walsh Series by Kate Canterbury, but The Cornerstone has moved right into the top position as my hands-down favorite of the series. I knew I'd enjoy it, but I wasn't anticipating just how much I would like it because, let's be honest, anyone who's read the series knows that Shannon is, um, well... she's difficult.

"I was the f***ing boss."

Shannon Walsh gives new meaning to the phrase small but fierce. She is a pint-sized powerhouse of a woman who, by her own description, tames lions for fun. An attorney running the day-to-day business side of the the family architectural firm, Shannon is the glue that holds it ALL together - the business and her brothers' lives. She's got a full plate managing Sam's medical and mental health, planning Matt and Lauren's wedding, handling the revolving door of assistants for the moody Patrick and reminding Riley on a daily basis to zip up his pants. She is in charge of it all for each one of her brothers. Dry cleaning, ordering suits, doctor appointments, hosting the holidays, and absolutely everything in between, she has so many balls in the air at any given time, it's no wonder that the woman just can't seem to ever shut it down and relax. Brusque, bitchy and bossy, Shannon is a five-foot-nothing, red-headed force to be reckoned with.

"You're a misogynistic meathead."

Will Halsted, a career Navy SEAL commander, is stateside for his sister's wedding - to a man he had no idea she was even dating - after nearly three years on the front lines leading dangerous operations hunting terrorists. He's meeting the Walsh clan for the first time at Matt and Lauren's wedding. Shannon is tasked with the assignment of keeping on eye on Will to prevent any potential kidnapping and interrogation attempts he may make involving the groom. Dealing with his "post-deployment horny," Will readily admits he does not like Shannon, but yet he is still very attracted to her, and thus a wedding hook up is inevitable. The sharp barbed insults the two of them hurl at each other only serve as foreplay, and they definitely set the tone for the rest of their dealings with each other.

"I knew this wasn't scheduled sex anymore."

Explosive chemistry and Will's uncanny ability to boss the bossy Shannon equates to more hook ups whenever he is stateside. For Shannon's part, the only time she can ever seem to shut down, relax and quiet her mind is when Will is ordering her to do so, generally while they're having sex. They add texting to the mix, and the witty, snippy banter doubling as foreplay continues. It's during one of their weekends away when Will confiscates her phone that all hell breaks loose at home, Sam implodes, and Riley lays into her upon her return about not being there when they needed her most that has Shannon deciding she has to end it with Will. Unfortunate timing given that Will is headed out on a long, radio silent deployment. Before he leaves he is able to deliver his parting shot to Shannon warning her that he'll be coming for her when he gets back.

"Someone had to make things easier on her, to lighten her load."

When Will finally comes back for Shannon, showing up unannounced at her apartment late one night, he has more than just a chilly reception from Shannon to deal with. He knows it's not going to be easy to win her back, but he also recognizes that this woman deserves to be fought for, to be won. While he's dealing with some major issues of his own, the only thing he knows for certain is that he wants to be where Shannon is, so he digs his heels in, determined to wait her out. Will a long-time-coming argument waged by hurling insults - and citrus - coupled with Will's never-ending, patient ability to manage Shannon be enough to end the war?

I positively loved this story. Shannon was a tough one to love, but Ms. Canterbary really peeled back this character's layers for her readers showing us what really made her tick. The beauty of this relationship was how Will just so totally got Shannon, how he understood what it was that she needed, and how he was the only person in her life able to give those things to her time and time again. As hilarious as their banter was, there were poignant moments, too. This is the Walshes, after all, and there is a world of pain that each one of them deal with relative to their childhood, the death of their mother and the horrid abuse at the hands of their father. There were several moments throughout this story when I could literally feel Shannon's relief at Will's mere presence, even when she was fighting it or refusing to acknowledge him. Will wanted nothing more than to give this woman a break, and he made it abundantly clear that in their relationship, he would be the one taking care of her, not the other way around.

As I've come to expect from the talented Kate Canterbury, The Cornerstone was exceptionally well-written and a fabulously developed story. It ticked off so many of my favorite things in a romance story with it's oh-so-smart humor, a patient and loving alpha male who was unmistakably in charge, a genuine love between the main characters and, of course, plenty of smoking hot sexiness. I enjoyed every minute of this book! I love the Walshes, I love this series, and I love Kate Canterbury! This, folks, is what contemporary, erotic romance is all about! Well done, Kate!

5.0 out of 5 stars Will and Shannon are the perfect match

I've said it once and I will say it again, Kate Canterbary is one of the most underrated authors there is! her writing if funny, witty, heartfelt, scrumptious and all the good things in the world! Will and Shanon are the perfect match and considering I've read all of the Walsh stories even the one in the anthology, I can safely say that they are the best Walsh couple (even though technically they become Halsteds) Shanon's relentless effort to push Will away will always be the best thing ever and Will's persistent attempts to break her walls are equally as good! I cannot state this enough, EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ THIS STORY!

there are some trigger warnings in the book so I think everyone should make sure you are good with that before reading it but in my opinion its absolutely worth the read

I like the Walsh series books. It’s comforting how they all find their HEAs after their awful childhood.
The only thing I’m not a fan of is that I feel that sometimes there is too much of an ellipse or blur around said childhood. I know it’s a choice of the author and not laziness or lack of depth but it feels like it to me while reading. It’s the same with the whole series and that’s why I like it but don’t love it.

Loved everything about this book. Humour, hotness & HEA. Kate’s characters are so real and I felt like cheering when they finally gave in to their true feelings. A spirited dialogue through texting between characters moved the storyline along vividly & teased insights to other stories. Must read those now, too!

5.0 out of 5 stars some spoilers

I discovered Kate Canterbary by accident, but after about Matt and Lauren I went on to download all the others. I then proceeded to have a book binge, I love finding a new author with a back list, Eventually I came to Shannon's story, and what a story it is. The depth of detail in Will and Shannon is just staggering. Listening to will's mental monologue about life of the battlefield. No earpiece with all the background noise, the weight of his body armor, the feel of a weapon strapped to his leg. It made him feel so real to me. Then the finer details about Shannon, to come to the awful understanding of just how much she sacrificed to keep her little sister safe was horrifying, yet at the same time shows that she has a resolve made of steel. Perhaps that is why she and Will are so well matched. I loved how their story and relationship grew through out the book, The texting scenes were hilarious and the epilogue was a delight, Froggie, I want to meet you. Will will finally have a "baby seal" to look after.
I would, and do, advise anyone who enjoys well crafted stories and characters to read this authors work. She is outstanding and now an automatic buy for me.
