To Catch a Falling Star (The Graham Saga Book 8) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 522 ratings

Some gifts are double-edged swords … For Matthew Graham, being given the gift of his former Scottish manor is a dream come true. For his wife, Alex, not so much. She doesn't want to undertake a perilous sea journey or leave most of their family behind in the Colony of Maryland. But letting Matthew leave without her is no option.

Scotland in 1688 is a divided country, torn between the papist Stuart king and the foreign but Protestant William of Orange. In the Lowlands, popular opinion is with Dutch William, and Matthew’s reluctance to openly support him does not endear him to his former friends and neighbours.

While Matthew struggles to come to terms with the fact that Scotland of 1688 bears little resemblance to his lovingly conserved memories, Alex is forced to confront unresolved issues from her past, including her overly curious brother-in-law, Luke Graham.

And then there’s the further complication of the dashing, flamboyant Viscount Dundee, a man who knocks Alex completely off her feet.

All the turmoil that accompanies their return to Scotland pales into insignificance when a letter arrives, detailing the calamities threatening their youngest daughter in Maryland – at the hand of that most obnoxious minister, Richard Campbell.

Matthew and Alex have no choice but to hasten back, no matter the heartache this causes.

Will they make it back in time? And what will Richard Campbell do?

Had Anna been allowed to choose, she'd have become a professional time-traveller. No luck there, so instead she became a financial professional with two absorbing interests; history and writing. These days, Anna combines an exciting day-job with a large family and her writing endeavours. Plus she always finds the time to try out new recipes, chase down obscure rose bushes and initiate a home renovation scheme or two.

Anna has authored the acclaimed time travelling series The Graham Saga , set in 17th century Scotland and Maryland, as well as the equally acclaimed medieval series The King’s Greatest Enemy.

Anna has also published The Wanderer, a fast-paced contemporary romantic suspense trilogy with paranormal and time-slip ingredients. Her September 2020 release, His Castilian Hawk is a story of loyalty and love set against the complications of Edward I’s invasion of Wales in the late 13th century.

Her most recent release, The Whirlpools of Time , is a time travel romance set against the backdrop of brewing rebellion in the Scottish highlands.

All of Anna’s books have been awarded the IndieBRAG Medallion, she has several Historical Novel Society Editor’s Choices, and one of her books won the HNS Indie Award in 2015. She is also the proud recipient of several Reader’s Favorite medals as well as having won various Gold, Silver and Bronze Coffee Pot Book Club awards.

It was with trepidation I began reading this the eight book and last book in The Graham Saga. Not because I feared I’d be disappointed, but because it was the last. I was not disappointed. Matthew and Alex and their extended family are as wonderful in this book as in all the preceding ones. And even better, from recent interviews I’ve understood Ms Belfrage is presently busy with a next book.
As always, Ms Belfrage pulls off an exciting story against a beautifully depicted setting. As always, she has me hoping that someday a crossroads will open at my feet. Someday. For those as yet not acquainted with Alex, her wonderful husband Matthew and all their adventures, I can but say congratulations – you have a marvellous journey in front of you!

I read all eight books in the series and I must admit, I couldn't wait to sit and read more. Belfrage is a master at presenting actual historical events in to this fantastical tale about time travel and magic paintings. I loved it! The only criticism I can admit to is that of the author's obssession-like descriptions of the sex scenes between the two main characters, Alex and Matthew. It became so redundant and boring and sophomoric that I would actually skip paragraphs. I am no prude, believe me, but these sex-laden pages, every other chapter, took away from the tale.

I'm not even sure where to start with this one. My heart is heavy when I think that it may be the last in this very special series of books. I have eagerly anticipated the release of each book in this series and have finished each of them within days of release. I have also reread the series a few times. If you just stumbled across this book and haven't read the others, I recommend starting from the beginning with A Rip in the Veil. You won't be sorry. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Ms. Belfrage can be convinced to write another.

I believe that the Graham Family Saga can and should continue.
Alex brought so much depth to the saga. Matthew was the glue to bind the story.
And in the stories Matthew would get stupid ideas... and Alex would fix the aftermath.
Deaths and births. Love and religious persecution.
The sadness of women not having equality in the 1600's.
I love this Saga. I look forward to sequels!!

    Commit to this reading!
It's life and work and survival.

    Thank you Anna Belfrage!

Anna Belfrage has written a fun series about a woman who falls through time into the mid 1600's. Alex falls in love with Matthew, they make their home in colonial Maryland, and have many children....with lots of adventures, trials and triumphs along the way. This particular novel details some of the religious bigotry of colonial America. Her characters are relatable and likable. Her writing is just a step down from Diana Galbadon, but is enjoyable none the less.

To Catch a Falling Star is the final end to the Graham Saga series and it was a perfect ending to the story of Alex and Matthew and their legacy. I so enjoyed the series and this adventurous love story. I also felt as if I learned something more about Scottish and American history.

This is the last book in the Graham saga and I find myself uncharacteristically relieved. Usually I am sad to be ending a journey that began so many books ago. While I must emphatically state that these books are well crafted, with characters that come to life in the reading of words. This is no small feat, I've read plenty of books that have not been successful in real character development. So..you may ask why 3 stars? The truth is there is simply too much turmoil, almost gratuitous in nature. I enjoyed many of the characters and their adventures. I just felt tired at the end of this last installment and I can't help but wonder how anyone could maintain their sanity in such constant turmoil. I would be remiss if I didn't reiterate that I did read all 8 books. Obviously that has to mean something.

Very much like some of the other reviewers, I find it very hard to finish this series of books, because as much as I wanted to read the last in the series of 'The Graham Saga', I really don't know how I'm going to live without Alex and Matthew in my life. They have all been extremely well written and I have been completely swept up in the life of the Grahams. The final paragraph had me sobbing like a baby. These books have been a part of my life for the past 18 months and I am going to miss them terribly.

This is a great book and I am sorry to see the series concluded. Another interesting spin off of reading the Graham saga is that the author has given me a window into what life was like for my ancestors who came to America in those early days. As I work on my family trees, I have a new appreciation of what of how hard it would have been to reach à ripe old age`.

Well I certainly hope there will be another book added to The Graham Saga, as they are definitely an excellent read. Anna Belfrage writes as if she has actually been there and done it all! I thoroughly love her style of writing, her attention to detail, and just her general plot. Amazing.

If you are looking for a fantastical escapest read I can recommend this saga of the adventures of Alex and Matthew in Scotland and the New World in the 1600's. The story draws you in and the author''s historical research and detail of life and death in these times is brilliant and makes you want to find out more about her characters - the time travelling element of the plot makes it all the more intriguing.
