Ari : A ghostly paranormal horror novel (To Each His Ghost Book 1) Kindle Edition
The moment Ari Bowers stepped inside the abandoned farmhouse on the outskirts of White Haven, Pennsylvania, she wanted to hightail it out of there like the ghost-fearing girl she was. Instead, she let her crush, Marcus Wagner, lead her into the shadows.
Oops.
As she predicted, they ran out screaming. But something followed her home.
Since that night, Ari is haunted by something she can’t see. It watches her when she sleeps. It caresses her in the shower. It carves words into her skin and lives alongside her, never satisfied with her terror. It always wants more, and Ari begins to fear it will take her and her date back to the farmhouse… forever.
For Ari and Marcus, it’s not a matter of whether or not monsters are real; It’s a life-or-death race to figure out which one is out to drag their souls to hell.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAri (To Each His Ghost #1) by S.M. Boyce is not your standard ghost story. It is a dark trip through the paranormal filled with creepy and horrific scenes that leave you feeling that this could happen to you.
Ari and Marcus have just started dating. Marcus is the star wide receiver of the local high school football team and a bit of a player. Ari is the quintessential good student and quiet girl who keeps to herself and is beyond thrilled that a hot guy like Marcus asked her out. In fact, she doesn’t quite believe it, and keeps looking for the hidden joke to be played on her. Marcus, on the other hand, just wants to get laid and then move on to the next girl. After finding out that Ari watches paranormal TV shows, Marcus drags her on a “date” to the local deserted, decrepit, haunted house that has stood abandoned for many years. He figures that she will be more amenable to making out and perhaps going all the way in a terrified state.
The evening doesn’t go as Marcus had planned. As our couple is exploring the house, Marcus enthusiastically and Ari reluctantly, they encounter a small boy who just disappears, disembodied heads floating in a closet, scratches and pokes from invisible somethings, and get totally spooked. While running out the door in terror, Marcus breaks through the rotten floorboards and lands in the basement, where he has another paranormal encounter that he doesn’t know what to make of. The teens finally reach Marcus’s car and speed away, both furious with each other. Each blames the other one for their terrifying encounter.
Both Ari and Marcus discover scratches on their backs that they can’t figure out how they got there. Ari starts to believe that the spooky activity in the old house was truly paranormal. Marcus refuses to believe that ghosts are real and the only way he can justify the sighting in the house and the scratches on his body is to believe that Ari “set him up” with recordings and projectors to make the house appear haunted.
Little do Ari and Marcus realize that their living nightmare is only beginning, because something has followed them home. It’s not initially apparent what that is.
Both of their lives begin to take a downward spiral. Ari continues to experience ghostly activity around her and becomes increasingly frustrated and desperate trying to discover a way to make it stop. Of course, no one believes her, and they begin to question her sanity. Marcus isn't’ attacked by typical ghostly activity, but his life seems to start to fall apart after one unlucky event after another. He is unable to catch a touchdown pass from then on, and loses his starting lineup spot. That is only the beginning.
This novel is well written in every way. It moved fast and held my interest throughout. As the novel progressed, the characters of Ari and Marcus evolved into actual people that you could care about. (Yes, even Marcus.) The stories of Ari and Marcus are somewhat different, and so are their personalities and how they react to events.
Is this story scary? Does the book live up to it’s promise? My answer is “yes”. This is a very scary story (but in a good way). I recommend it to all fans of horror and the paranormal.
S.M. Boyce is a talented author and I am going to read the second book in this series when it comes out.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBOOK DESCRIPTION:
Ari Bowers, your typical goth girl with an interest in the paranormal, is taken aback when the popular jock, Marcus Wagner, asks her on a date. He thinks the best way to charm her pants off, literally, is to take her into the infamous abandoned farmhouse on the outskirts of town that's rumored to be haunted due to a nefarious past. His surprise goes unbelievably wrong, and they both leave screaming and with an unwelcome third party.
Ari knows she's not alone anymore. She constantly feels like she's being watched. And then she begins to touch her and scratch her in her sleep. It soon becomes clear it feeds off her fear and can never be satiated. It wants her to suffer. It wants her to come back to the farmhouse. Forever.
For Ari and Marcus, it’s not a matter of whether or not monsters are real; It’s a life-or-death race to figure out which one is out to drag their souls to hell.
MY REVIEW:
I read this book as part of my #yearofindiewomen.
It had been a while since I'd read a paranormal novel, and this was a fun jump back in. The overall plot of this is intriguing, unique, and quite creepy. The villain is horrifying, and the backstory leaves you wanting to know more about the house and those who lived (and died) there.
Marcus and Ari's characters started off a bit cliched -- Marcus as the womanizing high school jock who only cares about the notches on his belt, and Ari as the goth chick into ghost shows and the paranormal -- but as the story moves along, their development becomes more nuanced. Marcus' relationship with his mother was a nice touch; it really helped to make him likable and less of a douche.
Boyce used a lot of the most tropey (is that a word) paranormal story things (i.e. scratches, footsteps/knocks in the night, whispers, etc.) in a way that felt close to ironic to tell a story all her own. She referenced ghost shows, almost poking fun at them. I don't know if this was her intention, but I liked it.
I finished this book in one day, and immediately had to download the prelude to this book, 'Origins', which I read in one sitting. I hope Boyce continues this series because she's got a knack for writing ghostly tales.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI received a free copy of this book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.
When Ari Bowers and Marcus Wagner, a popular football player, were on a date, Marcus wanted to impress Ari by taking her to the local haunted house, a real haunted house. Ari was terrified of the house and wanted to leave immediately. But Marcus refused to leave until her could make it with Ari. His goal of adding her to his list of conquests was his main concern. Not Ari or her panic. By the time she and Marcus get out of the house, Ari feels she is being watched. And she’s right. Something evil has attached itself to her.
Ari’s battle for freedom from this evil begins. First with feelings of not being alone, then seeing shadowy forms, being touched, scratched. The evil is taking over. The question is, can Ari save herself and live a normal life? Ms. Boyce’s story takes you to the edge with twists and turns and surprises. Her characters run the gamut of feelings and you care about them. You care what happens to them and how the spend their lives. Take the journey with Ari and Marcus and learn what happens when you disturb the spirits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scary Story
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book was a scary read in the genre of the Victorian era. It was excellent in the way that the suspense was gradually jacked up. This is a book to be read on a dark evening, with a log fire burning in the grate. I liked the way that the book ended, with a hint of more to come. Cannot wait for the next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI haven't read a creepy book in awhile. This had the right balance and was definitely worth reading.
Probably not a good idea to read in the dark in bed but as this is my quiet time i did and it helped set the scenes perfectly.
S.M.Boyce is a good writer in more than one genre. Give her books a try. You will be pleasantly surprised.
