About the authors
I am a retired Marine infantry colonel and now a full-time writer living in Colorado Springs with my wife Kiwi and twin five-year-old girls, Danika Dawn and Darika Marie. I am a two-time Nebula Award Finalist, a two-time Dragon Award Finalist, and a USA Today Bestselling writer.
I published my first work back in 1978, a so-so short story titled "Secession." Since then, I have been published in newspapers, magazines, and in book format in fiction, political science, business, military, sports, race relations, and personal relations fields. I returned to writing fiction in 2009, and I currently have over 100 titles published, 80 being novels. My novelette, "Weaponized Math," was a finalist for the 2017 Nebula Award, "Fire Ant" was a finalist for the 2018 Nebula Award for Best Novella, "Integration" was a finalist for the 2018 Dragon Award for Best Military Science Fiction or Fantasy Novel, and "Sentenced to War" was a finalist for the 2021 Dragon Award in the same category.
My undergraduate degree was earned at the U. S. Naval Academy (Class of 1979), and I have attended graduate school at U. S. International University and the University of California, San Diego, earning a masters and doctorate. I am a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the US. Naval Academy Alumni Association, and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America where I'm serving as the Nebula Award Commissioner.
I have rather eclectic tastes. I have won awards in photography, cooking, writing, and several sports, earning national championships in rugby and equestrian events. When I'm not writing, I'm reading, cooking, going to the gym, taking my girls fishing, or traveling. I attend quite a few cons over the course of a year, and love meeting other people who love books.
I write because I love it. I only hope that others might read my work and get a bit of enjoyment or useful information out of my efforts.
Kayelle Allen writes sci-fi, space opera, romance, and gay romance. Does she write happy ever afters? Some stories require endings that offer happy-for-now, or hopeful-for-the-future. But all provide endings that satisfy, and never leave you dangling over a cliff.
She did a tour in the US Navy, where she climbed around airplanes (on the ground, thankfully) fixing black boxes that helped pilots find their way home. Kayelle wrote her first science fiction novel at eighteen and to this day, she hides it under the bed, where she vows it will remain. Gems from it, however, launched several series in her galaxy-wide universe of stories.
From childhood, Kayelle was the victim of an overactive imagination and inherited the Irish gift of gab from her mother. From her father, she got a healthy respect for mechanical things.
No wonder she writes Science Fiction and Fantasy peopled with misbehaving robots, mythic heroes, role playing immortal gamers, and warriors who purr. She's been married so long she's tenured.
Michael (Mikey to friends) lives and works in a tiny village on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon. He writes stories with characters you can believe in and plots you can sink your teeth into.

Timothy Ellis lives on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia; where he battles with his cat for possession of his desk chair. Daleks do guard duty, and he keeps his sonic screwdriver next to his lightsaber and wand.
He spent his life reading and watching science fiction and fantasy, and has been playing Space Genre computer games since he used to be smuggled in to play the original text Star Trek game on a university mainframe, long before the PC or Apple appeared. Since 2004, he's written game guides for the Egosoft X Universe series, culminating in two versions of the X3 Handbook, and an X4 Shipyard building guide. He has also designed major mods for the various games, and dozens of mini mods.
He has been a farm worker, Antique Dealer, Computer Programmer, Systems Analyst, Operations Manager of a small retail chain, and Retail Store Owner. He is now a full time author, who still does Spiritual Healer and helper work.
After leaving behind the corporate and business worlds, he was opened to his Spiritual gifts. Now a Feng Shui Master, Feng Shui led him to Buddhism, Karma, the Tao, and back to western spiritualism. Since 2006 he has been writing spiritual articles and helping people via spiritual forums and Facebook Groups. His spiritual books include "Personal Healing Using Basic Meditation", "Life Harmony, Feng Shui in Plain English", '101 Tips for the John of God Brazil Experience', and "The Wisdom of the Ages is available for the price of asking a question" series of 8 books. His own spiritual healing led him to writing novels.
His first novel, 'Hero at Large', spawning the long running 'The Hunter Imperium' universe, brings together his love of the space genre, magic, spirituality, and cats. Now 12 series long, the universe covers 3 galaxies, 4100 years, and as at Unlock, 85 Novels, 8 shorts, and 2 companion books. There are 7 main entrance points across the 12 series: Hero at Large, Admiral of Gaia, Yesterday's Spacemage, Crossover, Midshipman Spacemage, Old Magic, and Killer Bunny. Alternate entrance points if you don't need backstory first, are Adrift, Mage King, Dragon Rider, and Unfair. There is also 2 parody shorts with a crossover with Villain Support.
The fastest way to find out about a new release is my Facebook group/page, which get advance warning about a week before release, and again when the book is uploaded to Kindle; and my email list which goes out close to midnight of release day in the US. Bookbub will let you know about 3-4 days after they get the pre-order date right. Amazon may or may not tell you at all.
I normally will release in advance of the specified pre-order release date whenever possible (which due to Amazon policy I set at 2-3 months, but release around 30 days from the last release date normally. So if you are a Kindle Unlimited reader, you will want another method to be notified of the actual release date, so you can download and read on day 1.
Some things which might help you choose to read my books (or not):
- You and I are on the same journey of discovery. Me as I write it, and you as you read it.
- I mainly write 'life in space'. Living the life of the character is more important than what happens. Or if you like, bathroom breaks and throwing up are part of life.
- I don't write using 3 acts. I'm a 'pantser', not a plotter.
- There is no pacing. What happens, happens, as it happens. Or put another way, life happens. Perfect pacing for me, isn't real life. Sh*t all happens at the same time, and then there's a lot of boredom. Deal with it.
- I use the 'Oxford Comma', and when I read a sentence, where I pause gets a comma. The comma is a pause, so if you are pausing, you're reading it as I wrote it. Any discomfort is you're own problem. Apparently I put too many in, and not enough, and in the wrong place, and all at the same time. Deal with it.
- I dislike the assumption that as a main character levels up in skills, the bad guys do as well, or the situations must get worse.
- I intensely dislike a main character who is strong, but has to do stupid, or pull a rabbit out of an orifice, because the bad guy is always stronger.
- I really hate the assumption that a main character should always be threatened with death or worse, no matter how strong they are. If you need your main characters to be under threat all the time, don't read my books.
- If you're reading the Spacemage books with the expectation of overpowered meets bigger overpowered, you're missing the whole point of what I'm writing. The important conflict is always internal, not external.
- I don't actually write Epic Saga, like so many SF&F authors do. In spite of the first series going 14 books, and setting up a universe. I'm more interested in how characters deal with things, than momentous events. 11 series later, the universe is epic all on it's own.
- I'm Australian, and I use Australian spelling, and ways of talking. Writing Australian is not bad grammar, it's just different. Word is trying to turn me into an American, but I'm fighting back. You either like the way I write, or you don't. Either way, it's your problem.
- I don't use ARC's and no longer have a Beta reader. I don't send out free copies for reviews. I don't discount on day 1. Deal with it.
- I actively fix any goof/typo/issue in my books, as they get identified. This is not a matter of bad editing, but being aware you can never find everything, and us Indies can fix it when we find it, and so we do. My pet peeve is all the Trad books I re-read where none of the many goofs have ever been fixed.
- You can let me know any issue through my Facebook group/page, or via my new release mailing list email I send out from. All my books have had updates. Check for update buttons in your Amazon account settings, or request Amazon to update your copy, since they don't auto-update every time I do one. This includes KU, where updates are also not automatic. You must request an updated version by removing the book, and downloading again.

Though he's been writing his entire life, Justin Bell published his first novel officially in 2014 and hasn't looked back since. Thanks to a great partnership with Muonic Press, Justin has established a solid foothold in the Post-Apocalyptic genre, quickly racking up nearly 100 published novels alongside #1 best seller Mike Kraus. Justin has found a love for the genre and greatly looks forward to telling more.
Justin cut his teeth in fiction with the works of Steven King, consuming the entire 1600 page novel of The Stand when he was just twelve years old. That novel made a lasting impression and his fascination for post-apocalyptic tales continues to this day.
When not writing, Justin spends quiet time in rural New Hampshire with his wife, his kids and his dog, enjoying the wilderness and relishing the simpler ways life used to be.
Craig is a million-selling author of science fiction (post-apocalyptic, military sci-fi, and space opera), thrillers, and non-fiction.
Craig retired from the Marine Corps after a long career in the military intelligence community, having worked with most of the U.S. Government's three-letter agencies. After a short stint with physical security, Craig went to law school, graduated summa cum laude, and went into business consulting. From intelligence, to the inner workings of company board rooms, to on-the-ground leadership, Craig has seen it firsthand.
His books are an extension of his experience, putting the trials and tribulations of a fast-paced world into your hands. Whether in Science Fiction, Thrillers, Fantasy, or even his Non-Fiction, you'll find consistent themes of justice and doing right by those who are counting on their leaders. Leadership is a service, not a crown to lord over others.
No matter where Craig went, he always had a book with him. Thanks to 21st Century technology, He now has thousands of books at his fingertips and with him wherever he goes. How many books would he have read on deployments had he not had to carry a physical book?
No one is encumbered like that now. Craig loves the works of Robert Heinlein, Anne McCaffrey, Andre Norton, JRR Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, and so many more. He has been compared to Andre Norton and that is humbling - she was an incredible author with a huge list of novels to her credit. With every new book, Craig aspires to live up to those that you, the readers, have compared him to.
Through a bizarre series of events, Craig ended up in Fairbanks, Alaska. He never expected to retire to a place where golf courses are only open for four months out of the year. But that's the way it is. It is off the beaten path. He and his wife get to watch the northern lights from their driveway. Their dog has lots of room to run, just until temperatures reach fifty below zero. They have from three and a half hours of daylight in the winter to twenty-four hours in the summer.
It’s all part of the give and take of life. If they didn’t have those extremes, then everyone would live in the sub-arctic.
I was born and raised in Tampa, Florida. I joined the Air Force, and my career took me from coast to coast before depositing me in the St. Louis, Missouri area for several years. After a tour in Korea and a short return to the St. Louis area, I retired and moved to the greater Denver, Colorado metropolitan area.
I write speculative fiction, mostly science fiction and fantasy. My favorite writers over the years have been Robert E. Howard, Philip K. Dick, Roger Zelazny, and Michael Crichton.
Yudhanjaya Wijeratne is an author, data scientist and general tinkerer from Colombo, Sri Lanka.
His fiction includes novels like Numbercaste, The Inhuman Race, and The Salvage Crew. His stories have won the Gratiaen Prize, been nominated for the Nebula and Independent Games Festival awards, appeared in venues like Wired, ForeignPolicy and Slate, and been Washington Post and Audible bestsellers. He has several cats who care about none of these things, and spends most of his time on his homestead in Kandy.
Drew Avera is a Navy veteran turned science fiction author who brings thrilling space adventures to life with heart, grit, and a touch of redemption. A lifelong fan of Star Trek, Star Wars, and anything Marvel, Drew blends cinematic storytelling with emotionally driven characters who fight for hope against impossible odds.
He is the author of multiple series, including Absolution, a tale of betrayal, loss, and redemption set against the backdrop of interstellar conspiracy, and Consulate, a high-stakes military sci-fi adventure that explores loyalty, duty, and survival.
When he's not writing explosive space battles or crafting layered, character-driven narratives, Drew enjoys instrumental music, classic sci-fi, and dreaming about what’s waiting beyond the stars. He currently lives with his family in Virginia and continues to dream big dreams.

“Tales of heroism and wonder are important. They help us remember the best parts of being human, teach us to rise above what we are to become what we can be. I aspire to tell those sorts of stories. Thank you for being a part of the journey!”
The multiple-USA today bestselling author of over a hundred science-fiction and fantasy novels, Kevin McLaughlin writes daily to share stories of adventure, hope, and heroism.
Born in Far North Queensland, I ended up being dragged over most of the state before the age of ten--and then into the Northern Territory and back, so that I attended four different primary schools and two high schools by graduation. In a country that inspires the imagination, and in towns that made me dream of worlds beyond my own, I started writing early, and reading voraciously.
In high school, I discovered writers like Anne McCaffrey, Harry Harrison, John Christopher, Douglas Hill and Alan Dean Foster. They kept me company--and semi-sane--through most of my young adult years, and beyond. I’ve done time in the Royal Australian Air Force, worked as a governess and teacher, and been an analyst, and, all that time, I kept writing, and exploring both my worlds and those I was privileged to be invited to share. Now, you can find my stories in ebook form at most of the major distributors. Thank you, for sharing this part of my journey with me.
Why do I write? Why does anyone write? Because they have something to say. For me, I have ideas boiling around all the time–situations, cool concepts, occasionally diatribes, but overall, I have characters in my head that demand their chance at existence. Who am I to stand in their way?
I was born at a very early age. As part of a military family, we moved around a LOT. My dad’s last duty station was West Point, NY, and I was fortunate enough to be admitted to the Class of 1982 (“The Select Few”). It was at West Point that I met the woman I would marry, Barbara. We’ve been married since 1983. I was in the US Army for 6+ years, ending my tour in West Germany (how quaint that sounds!). I joined a civil engineering firm in NYC, then, six years later, a transportation company in NJ.
I ran into National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo.org) and actually wrote 50k words in one month. I looked around their website, looking for other opportunities to write. And found them.
I started writing short stories and submitting them to markets. I read blogs and learned craft. I went to events like Pitchapalooza to learn how to pitch agents and publishers. I had dozens of near-misses, and still do--some markets get flooded with hundreds of submissions. The key is perseverance--just keep working at it. You never know when a break will come.
I give back--by helping others who are just starting out, and encouraging others who are on the road to publication like me
NaNoWriMo: I am one of two Co-Municipal Liaisons to the Central NJ Region.
Princeton Writing Group: Since NaNo tends to peak in November and rapidly dies off thereafter, I help with the Princeton Writing Group, a Meetup.com group that has been going strong for years. Write-ins, daytrips, Book-Con outings, PWG does it all.
Three Day Novel: I got into this as a direct result of being in NaNoWriMo, finally taking the plunge in August of 2010. Insane! Write a 30k novella in 72 hours? But I did it, and haven’t missed a year. "The Longest Con" is my 2014 entry. I will polish and publish most of them during 2017.
Can you do what I have done? ABSOLUTELY! Want some guidance? Check out my blog, and feel free to contact me through the blog.
David J. VanBergen Jr. is a life-long science fiction and fantasy fan. After reading those books for 30+ years, he had an epiphany while reading a popular fantasy book in the bathtub. He said to himself, "This book is really bad . . . I can do that!"
At that point he learned the power of self fulfilling prophecies. His first fantasy book published on his 40th Birthday in 2013 and truly fulfilled the prophecy of writing a bad book.
Things soon got better, though, and David's writing journey took him to strange and wonderful places like the Amish Romance and Western Mail Order Bride sub-genres of Christian Romance before spending an extended period traveling in futuristic worlds of science fiction adventure. Those books (written under pen names) were merely part of the journey, though, and he eventually made it back to the destination he set out for. Sort of.
Today, David writes mostly fantasy stories that involve dragons or elements of role-playing games. Or both. He is currently working on at least two different series himself as well as several co-authored projects.

Nathan Mutch’s first novel, The Unity, is the first book of a planned three-part Science Fiction series. The second book in The Unity Empire Series, A Song for the Dead, was released June 2017.
His current projects include two co-authored books; a stand-alone fantasy novel tentatively titled, Between Realms; and of course, the third installment of The Unity Empire Series.
The first of the two co-authored books is an experimental science fiction mind-bender written (so far) entirely by correspondence. The second co-authored book delves into the Fantasy genre.
Nathan Mutch currently lives in Northern Canada with his family.
David R. Bernstein is a Torment Publishing author who writes sci-fi and fantasy young adult fiction. After several years in the Pacific Northwest, he recently returned to his native Southern California to focus on writing.
David has three wonderful children and has been happily married to his beautiful wife for over 14 years. When he's not writing or researching his next story, you'll most likely find him wrestling with their kids around the house, working out at the gym, or hooping it up on the local basketball courts.

Lyn Forester graduated with a Bachelor in English and an Associates in Graphic Design. She worked in the graphic design industry for ten years before deciding to pursue her other life long dream of becoming a writer. She grew up reading mostly fantasy books, though later in life found a love of urban fantasy and science fiction. She currently works from her home in Washington State where she squeezes in writing time around a busy schedule. When not working, she can be found experimenting with new recipes, reading, or playing video games and the occasional board game.
Lyn Forester also writes paranormal gay romance under Sophie O'Dare and new adult paranormal romance under Lili Black.

One of my fondest memories as a child is sitting on my grandmother’s doorstep with my great uncle and having him tell me all about space. That moment led to a lifelong obsession with the universe and an insatiable curiosity. Growing up in a small Idahoan town with not a lot to do required a lot of imagination. Outside was my playground and adventure blossomed everywhere I went, even if it was only in my head. The library was another of my havens and it was only a matter of time before I began developing my own ideas. To this day I have notebooks filled with questions and ideas that I still reference. That “What if” curiosity is still present, and now I explore my curiosity through my own writing.

Information War by Craig Martelle
When a big story breaks what shoud you believe? The first thing you hear? Why are there so many conflicting reports? Why do news channels feel the need to spin the news for us, tell us what we have already heard first hand, sometimes twisting the words to suit political views? Where does the truth lie amidst all the "reporting"? That is part of the premise of this story.
Aliens have attacked one of our distant outposts in space. Or have they? Reporter Kenny Freeman is trying to guage the reaction of the crowd. The people are angry, frightened, watching the president's speech claiming attack. The facts are sketchy, and there is no video.
Kenny keeps a private notebook. This is where he writes the story he wishes he could publish. He isn't sure what the facts are, but he is sure the people aren't hearing them. He will file his story like the other reporters, but Kenny is different. He is determined to investigate. He wants to know the truth!

Breaker by David VanDyke
Humanity's fight for freedom never dies. Even in a world populated by clones the heart of freedom still beats as is so eloquently illustrated for us in this story.
Straker is the most famous freedom fighter in history, until he set himself up as a supreme ruler and was overthrown. He was sent to live in exile on an isolated planet. Then he rebelled.
Straker was caught. Now he is aboard a ship on his way to prison. During the trip Lazarus intends to interrogate Striker. He is determined to find out why the man became a rebel once more. What was Striker's ultimate plan? Who will win this battle of wits?

With writing that brings you inside the story along for the ride, step by step with his characters, this story delivers heart- stopping action, and emotion. Graduation day, pass the final test and be a Cutter, or the team loses and you wash out, nothing at all.
Sergeant John Chapman, team leader for the exercise, has everything riding on today. They all do, but it means more to John than a lot of the others. He is following in his sister's footsteps. Elizabeth died on her testing day. She never made it tp the Cutters. John has to make it for both of them. He doesn't believe that she made a mistake resulting in her own death. If there is a chance to find the real reason today, John will find it.
The team should do fine. They are all good at what they do. They have trained hard and they are ready. The difference is this is with live ammo. John and his team will be facing an unknown number of bots, several models and ages. The bots won't have live ammo but it will do damage, enough hits, and you will be termed "dead". John's team has to get past the bots on the battered destroyer The Pride of Titanan, floating in space, get the old engines running and fire up the ship.
Every team faces the same test. Today the rules have changed!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2018kindle unlimited, I have read some of the other compilations, main thing for me is not really into space operas really, but there were some interesting stories along with the not so interesting but I did cut some slack since mainly pulled it to see what Mikey's story was, plus since amazon says a 3 is 'bad' didn't want to go down that road again, and with anthologies added into mix of not being overly fond of space/military opera, but was 'enough' interesting ones to be okay though okay is a 3, see what I mean, 3 should NOT be negative review, so giving it a 4.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2018I absolutely enjoyed this entire volume of sci fi shorts. My favorites were, Messenger, by R.R. Virdi and Yudahanjaya (spelling?), Craig Martelle, and Timothy Ellis' one. You can't go wrong with any of them however. This is a wonderful steal and brilliant insight into the minds and worlds of so many talented sci fi authors. A good place to decide who to pick up in full and follow. For 99 cents, why aren't you diving into the expanse!?

- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2018I have become a fan of anthologies. I not only get to read a few favorite authors, but I get to 'sample' a few whom I haven't read before. So that's a win-win situation. There are some real gems in this book, and I've already gone on to grab some of their other works.
