After crash landing on a planet with no memory of his last assignment, Hil discovers that his handler is dead and someone’s put a price on his head.Injured and alone, he has no choice but to go rogue from the guild, fight to clear his name and wreak revenge on the people who set him up.

Residual Belligerence is the first book set in the high-tech Thieves’ Guild universe of galactic war, knife-edge intrigue, alien invasion, thieves, assassins, bounty hunters and pirates. Read it FREE on Kindle.

“Fantastic sci fi with tons of action…”

“If you love fast-paced military science fiction with an epic space opera feel that spans the entire galaxy, you’ll love this.”

“Feels like a whole universe the way good sci fi should…”

“…a very intelligently written sci fi story… Hatton doesn't spoon-feed anything to the reader: the background details, and the twists and turns in the plot, are incorporated into the flow of the story so that keeping track of them provides a stimulating reading experience without being confusing.”

“...the most exciting sci fi writer that I have read in the last 30 years.”

“Best find ever at a Comic Con…”

Very fast paced and difficult to put down. My heart was beating faster as Hil kept racing to escape all the different groups who were chasing him. Although the book takes place in the future, it didn't feel futuristic. Other than the AI space ships, there was a sense of people and events that would feel familiar in today's time.

Another reviewer mentioned that having each chapter begin with the two power brokers drinking wine and discussing how they plan to control everything was intriguing. I concur. It added suspense and tension.

As hinted at in the title, this book is indeed very fast-paced. But do not let that fool you into thinking this is just another action-packed sci-fi adventure. Like an onion, there are layers to this tale.

There are plots within plots and perhaps even another plot that encompasses all plots. And then there are probably side plots. The author reveals all very slowly through the amnesiatic memory of the main character, Hil, a member of the thieves guild. In addition, at the start of every chapter, there is a discussion between Hil’s superiors over wine where even more is revealed a sliver at a time. This is basically what makes this thriller very good and not just run-of-the-mill.

I plan on continuing to read the remainder of the books in this series with great anticipation.

Not sure how I really feel about this one.
A mash of too any stories within stories and unanswered questions that I assume will be answered in subsequent books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly addictive and imaginative story and characters, in my opinion among the best Scifi Novels I have ever read.

C G Hatton has produced a master piece epic story in the fictional world of the thieves guild of the future,
Set between Earth and Winter the guild and its agents are chased from one end of the galaxy to the other.
The Main character of book 1 Zak Hiyer is a top operative of the thieves guild and is very good at what he does though
he cant remember what he's done, problem is everyone else wants what he can't remember.
Residiual Belligerence is Highly addictive and imaginative, I raise my proverbial hat to the author.
As soon as I finished book 1 I immediatly bought book 2 and 3 now I can't wait for book 4.

    5.0 out of 5 stars A sexy action sci-fi
Reviewed in Australia on July 10, 2019
Our anti-hero main character Hil, aka Zack Hilyer starts off with not knowing what happened from retrieving a package from point A to send to point B. In the beginning nothing was given away as to which organisation was point A and point B. I even wondered what the hell was this package!?!

As his partner LC is missing and with a bounty for both their heads, he sets off with female bounty hunter Sean O’brien. It was amusing that she was compared to Martha on more than one occasion. It turned out that Martha and Hil had been an item previously. This could easy be a harem read - I mean come on, who is this Fliss character and why is she so affectionate? Even his AI led ship Skye calls him hun and honey, I was almost expecting her to morph herself into a holographic sex siren.

I like it how Martha is a fiery character, can hold her own and not afraid to use obscenities when needed. Compared to Hil who is polite and uses “freaking” when talking to outsiders, which I find cute. I think he is my new book boyfriend.

Each chapter starts off with Hil’s boss NG and The Man having a conversation over goblets of wine, as if telling us their point of view as the story unfolds.

I love how this universe has been created with the complexities of other planets and organisations throughout the galaxy.

My faith in sci fi is restored after this read. I look forward to reading more sci fi stories from the author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast-paced and intelligent urban fantasy/sci fi

I bought this on chance and very glad that I did. Great plot, well-written, and excellent characterisation.

It was listed under 'urban fantasy', which is accurate, but there is plenty within the story to appeal to those who are more interested in science fiction.

Some strands of the plot remain ambiguous, even at the end of the book. Betrayal and uncertainty drive the story, which has both intrigue and fast-paced action. The intrigue is wrapped around a complex political situation that should suit even the most tortuous minds. The fast-paced action balances the intrigue nicely although at times I wondered if the hero could take much more punishment. His indomitable spirit and sheer will to survive makes for an engaging character. There are plenty of hints about the main character's background that could provide a interesting prequel at some point, not to mention the elusive LC, who never appears directly in this book but whose presence is larger than life.

This is the kind of book I love to read. Full of excitement and pace. You genuinely feel for the characters and when certain characters get hurt or do something you weren't expecting, you can't help but carry on reading to find out what happens next. I can't wait to start book 2.
