This is a great second installment in the trilogy. The story is sensitive, unique, and has many unexpected plot twists. I can't wait for book three!

Vance Bastian's narration deserves a call-out. The main protagonist in the story in a seventeen-year-old boy and Vance’s performance as Jason was perfect. Never once did I not believe I was listening to a young man. There were also quite a few teenagers, their animal selves, adult men and women as well as several older characters. Vance handled them all brilliantly. It was a seamless and beautiful performance.

Now to the actual book. As with the first Golden One book, I enjoyed it immensely. The creativity involved in writing a Young Adult fantasy novel is tremendous and I’m always impressed when a writer gets it right, as Mr. Hirschi did. This book is an example of when the global goes local. The world we live in and the world Jason inhabits are the same – and is on the same destructive path. Human are ravaging the earth, plundering her precious resources, polluting her, and general abusing her. And her animals? The number of animals who are likely to go extinct this century is staggering – all because of human greed and avarice. Humans are the dominant species so we believe we can act with impunity, ruling the animal kingdom, and destroying any animals who get in our way.

This book centers around Jason Mendez. He’s almost eighteen, a senior in high school, and the anointed leader of all Byeonsin in the world. The Byeonsin are humans who can transform into animals. In the first book, Jason was given the ability to become a butterfly. He’s not just any butterfly, though. He’s the golden butterfly. Golden Butterflies are extremely rare and only appear when humankind is on the precipice of making a grave mistake. In the past, these appearances have been around upcoming war or mass slaughter and although Jason might be on earth to make that kind of save, it appears he might also have more to do with Mother Earth than her residents.

As the leader of the Byeonsin, he is also the natural leader of the Ohana. The Ohana are the executives of the Byeonsin and have formed an international association as a way to cover their meetings – putting out in the open what had once been secret. The world at large still has no knowledge of the Byeonsin or the Ohana. Because of Jason, the leadership of the Ohana is leaving a major African city and is moving to his small midwestern town of Amberville. He assumes he will have some form of involvement but there are forces conspiring against him. Suddenly his reason for being isn’t so clear.

With the help of his friends Laurel, Dinesh, Hannah, and Peter, Jason must discover his true purpose to save Mother Earth before it’s too late. This book ends of a massive cliffhanger but I loved that because I know there’s a final book coming shortly. Fingers crossed it will be out on audio soon as well. Again, as much as I enjoyed the first book, I enjoyed this one as well and can recommend it.

In the first book, Jason, the Golden One had stopped drilling from happening on a sacred plot of land with the help of his friends. They raised awareness and questions and made us wonder just who is a friend and who might be a foe. This story picks up shortly after the first left off with the group of young Byeonsin wondering what the real purpose of the Golden One is.
So many questions are answered in this story along with so many new ones. There’s really nothing more that we could ask for in a book that plays lead-up to what’s sure to be a climactic ending of an epic fantasy novel. This story is engaging and I really mean that. Once I started it I couldn’t put it down! There’s mystery and drama, heartfelt struggles and real heartache (Once again Hans Hirschi made me cry!). There are heavy issues in this book and as usual, Hans Hirschi isn’t afraid to show us just how real he can make his work.
Of course the title of the story, Deceit, is apt. Kudos to the author for showing us that we shouldn’t blindly trust someone because of their standing in society. Being open to questioning another’s actions is smart business.
One of the things that I enjoy most about this series is seeing those heavy issues dealt with from the perspective of a younger person. It’s a story that gives me hope for the future in real life as well as being a fantastic tale that will keep you on the edge of your seats!
I highly recommend this book/series and encourage you to read it for yourself as well as to share this wonderful piece of literary fiction with any and all of the young people you know.

The first book in The Golden One trilogy, Blooming, author Hans M. Hirschi introduces us to young Jason Mendez, a.k.a. the Golden One, and his amazing story. In the second book, Deceit, the author offers yet another thought-provoking story, and a must-read for both young and adult readers alike. Deceit continues the Golden One’s journey through life, as he tries to navigate the obstacles he encounters along the way. In the process we get to better understand this fascinating character and his world, to root for him and hope for his success. In the process, we also get to take a second look at ourselves and our own world.

What I love in particular about the story of The Golden One is that it helps us rediscover our relationship with Mother Nature, and to reconsider our role and place in Nature. Thus, the story of the Golden One offers us not only a fresh new lens through which to look at our existence and the real-life issues affecting it today, but also a compelling read that keeps us turning page after page.

Upon finishing reading Deceit, one thought came to mind--what's going to happen next? I can't wait to find out!

How far would you go to get what you believe is yours? How far would you go to protect those around you? Could you ask hard questions knowing the answers might not be what you want to hear? This story will explore all of this and more as we watch Jason learn's more about who he is and his role in this world. This book was definitely a page turner that will have you on your toes and will at times leave you speechless. This book will make you realize that sometimes the person you think is your allie is really your enemy. This is definitely a different type of a shape shifter book that I'd highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Second Volume in a brilliant series

Having read and thoroughly enjoyed the first book in The Golden One series, I was very much looking forward to book 2 and it doesn't disappoint. It picks up the characters and concepts from book 1 and develops them further. Whereas the first book was largely involved with establishing the world in which these books are set and introducing the characters and their abilities, Deceit moves the story on at pace, introducing very real threats and jeopardy, while still maintaining the strong ecological message at the heart of the series. These are intriguing, beautifully constructed and written books and I now can't wait for the final book later this year.
