Editorial Reviews

Review

"The author gave us the whole package: sweet, sexy, with a sprinkle of angst, and a lovely happily ever after. Highly recommend." Gay Book Reviews"

When I finished the book I had a huge smile on my face. This was a wonderful, character-driven romance, a book that left me happily sighing by the end. Plus, is was hot! Bonus!"
Sinfully Gay Romance Book Reviews"

The Law of Attraction is the perfect office romance: strong MCs, hot sex in inappropriate places, workplace camaraderie, and a smoldering undercurrent of (un)fulfilled sexual tension."
My Fiction Nook

"This is a trope that has been done a billion times. But Northcote put a spin on this that made it fresh, and I read this story in a devouringly short amount of time. There is nothing about this that says 'this has been done.'"

Jay lives just outside Bristol in the West of England. He comes from a family of writers, but always used to believe that the gene for fiction writing had passed him by. He spent years only ever writing emails, articles, or website content.

ay Northcote is outstanding and, her characters Alec and Ed were magical together with or without the Harry Potter duvet.

Alec had the world. He has the job he has always wanted, is on track to make partner at the firm, he is young and attractive, and is financially well off. Alec should be feeling on top on of the world. In reality, Alec is deeply closeted and it is a very dark, lonely and miserable place. All that changes when Ed comes into his life.

Feeling lonely and horny, Alec heads to gay bar and spots Ed. Ed pushes all of Alec's buttons physically and, he takes him home. Alec is more than a little disconcerted when he also feels a tiny spark of something - something more than just physical. Alec doesn't have the courage explore that spark. He allowed Ed to spend the night and, Alec has never done that before. Driven by fear, he hastily ushers Ed out the door the next morning.

Fate can be a fickle bitch. Alec and Ed are both shocked to their cores come Monday morning. The new temp hired by Alec's firm is none other than Ed. Watching these two navigate this mine field is a spectacular read. The physical pull between them only gets stronger (hotter) and the emotional connection deepens. (Loved the trip to Scotland and the killer spider.)

Alec realizes that in order to have Ed in his life he has to come out of his closet. He is 32 and finding that courage will not be easy. Longing to be with Ed and more importantly being able to finally be proud of himself will help him find the way.

Ed's family was everything a family should be - warm, caring and loving. In contrast, Alec's parents were cold and distant. I could not understand his mother's reaction when she finds out what her husband did to Alec when he was a teenager. I could never love, trust or respect my husband again if he did something so vile and violent. She should have hugged her son and headed straight for a divorce lawyer.

I love Northcote's writing style. Her books flow easily and her characters are easy to relate to and care about. I wanted grab a shovel and help Ed dig Alec out of his closet.

This book starts with what is supposed to be a one-night stand, but that gets a lot more complicated when a few days later, Ed is introduced as the new temp on Alec's team at work. Now the guys have to work together, something that is proving to be a challenge since they both felt a connection during the night that they spent together.

Alec is deep in the closet, while Ed is out and proud, and as they start to grow closer, this becomes another obstacle, because Ed is determined not to be anyone's secret.

This book was great! I loved the connection and chemistry between the main characters, and I really enjoyed the journey that Alec went on in this book. Ed was my favorite, but Alec definitely grew on me a lot throughout the book, and the relationship between the two of them was a wonderful mix of sweet, heartwarming and sexy. I highly recommend this book!

Alec and Ed's story was heart warming.

Ed is the young , confident guy. He is sure of himself and proud of the man he is.

He was attracted to Alec and acted on that attraction.

Alex was looking for a one night stand but found so much more in Ed.

ed was open and accepting. He was hurt by Alex's treatment of him after the night they shared, but still kept things professional.

He was right to refuse Alec a second one night stand.

but the attraction between them was too strong to ignore.

I loved seeing Alec smitten and in love. He had his reasons for keeping his sexual orientation a secret, but the demons of his past didnt make him happy, just lonely.

I loved seeing him open up to Ed emotionally and having the courage to come out to his family and work associates.

Ed is a character that stays with you. He was able to walk away from a relationship that wasn’t going to work for him. He stayed true to himself. Alec had to overcome his past, but in the end he found himself and got his man.

This is a straightforward romance with no cliffhangers, HEA. One quirk is that it is set in Brittain, but an occasional "kerb" or "favour" are the only clues, so Jay edited the story for clarity in the
    US.

The MC's are both interesting, one from working class and the other from somewhat well-to-do parents. First meeting? In a bar - before a one night stand.

Ed's day 1 on the new temp job at the law firm surprises him and Alec, his new boss. Lots of fun with angst and attractions on both sides. I was glad there were no cross-Atlantic attorney issues for corporate cases presented. Only enough details to keep the story interesting are involved.

Include a delightful trip to Edinburgh, meet both families, and shake - with plenty of good sex scenes - voila!

This yummy erotic romance is fun and satisfying. There's enough obstacles to satisfy, and the men seem real. A fun read in the genre.

    Thanks, Jay!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finding Love in an unexpected place
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 8, 2018
When Alec's one night stand Ed turns out to be the new office temp, you know the chemistry is going to be electric as they navigate their initially awkward but inevitably beautiful relationship.

Falling for Ed was never part of the plan but seeing each other day in day out proves too much for Alec, and despite being initially stubborn and refusing to give in to his feelings, the more time they spend together shows Alec that Ed is just the person he needs. You melt as you turn the pages and will this relationship on. Alec just needs the confidence to truly open himself up and Ed is the driving force behind that.

Absolutely loved this story and it is so well written it is easy to become totally invested in these characters as if they are your real life friends. Will definitely be reading more books from Jay Northcote.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ein warmherziges Buch mit starken Charakteren
Reviewed in Germany on May 10, 2021

Good story, as one would expect from this author. Alec is quite a sad character, to be expected from what happened in his teens, he's very lonely and adrift, despite his success at work. Ed is out and proud. After a one night stand with Alec he finds himself attracted and wanting more, despite Alec stating that he has no interest in long term. Finding out that he's working with Alec, shocks Ed, however, he does his job professionally, trying to hide his feelings for Alex. They both want a relationship but Alec refuses to come out. It breaks Ed's heart, but he refuses to compromise. I must admit that I admired Ed for not accepting an ' in the closet' relationship. After a small amount of angst Alec comes out and links up with Ed, they become a couple. The only thing missing was an epilogue (have to agree with former reviewer here). I'd have liked to've seen how the couple got on in the future, the ending was a little tenuous.

Okay it was a lovely live story with the terrible uncertainties and fears of coming out. I liked the characters and how their relationship grew with support for each other. But I also felt respect for Ed on saying no to being in a closet relationship. A lovely HEA.
