The Last to Know Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 261 ratings

Being married to your best friend isn’t as easy as it sounds.

Grace Hart wants a baby. She’s hitting her late 30s with no children, no husband, and no prospects for the happily ever after of her dreams. But she’s decided the perfect partner to help her change all that and build a future is right in front of her in the form of her best friend of twenty years. And she won’t let a minor detail like being very straight and her bestie being a lesbian stand in the way

Caz Madden has no right to be attracted to her best friend. Yes, Grace is beautiful, and the two of them share a level of emotional intimacy and trust that only deepens as they begin a cosy domestic partnership, then marriage, that even their closest loved ones are convinced is a true romance, but that doesn’t make it real. Does it?
Against all odds, an irrefutable spark kindles between Caz and Grace as they share space and their lives, but giving into it could end up shattering their friendship and both of their hearts.
Blurred boundaries and growing feelings sweep them to the brink of a love more passionate and tender than they could have ever imagined. Will they let themselves fall, or will fear drive them apart?

Heart-warming and original, The Last to Know is a friends-to-lovers, marriage of convenience, toaster oven, sapphic romance that shows the poignant heartaches and quiet joys of finding lasting love in the one place you should have been looking all along.

Claire Highton-Stevenson is a British Indie author. She writes heartwarming, Sapphic romance in contemporary settings. Claire's characters are bold, strong, independent women who love women.

However, she is also known to throw in a mystery or two. Claire likes to move around the tropes at will, and will often bend the rules to create exciting and often unique situations. She's not afraid to tackle darker topics either.

Grace and Caz have been each other's person for so long seeing the depth of their love they just did not grasp. The delicate way their relationship embraced the let's just live together was priceless. Claire Highton-Stevenson does a magnificent job of weaving the straight girl and her way friend who have made a decision to marry , then grow even more together. The ups and completely sad moments are full of dialogue that will bring tears and laughter. I also love the support both have in family and chosen family. It took a while for Grace to step into being their for Caz too and so I would love a part 2 but I always want more from Claire. This is just a great story filled with so much emotion, delicate and harsh experiences guaranteed to touch your heart.

This story had me hooked from the first page. Caz and Grace make such a great couple and I’m in love with their love. This book is filled with love to the bursting but it’s also filled with some tears and heartache and I had to literally wipe my eyes a few times while reading it. I adored this story and I’m totally smitten with both the characters.

Beautiful, emotional story! Caz and Grace are the bestest of friends close to reaching the forties. Grace wants a baby and decides that Caz is the perfect partner.
I loved the glimpses into the past. I loved their connection and chemistry. I loved their bond.
Oh! And the sweet cameo of Alex and Morgan was divine ;).
    Highly recommend!

I am a total fan of all of Claire’s books and this one is amazing! The fact that Claire brought back Morgan and Alex from Euphoria makes this even better! I love the past and present perspective, learning about their love and they begin to experience these new feeling at the same time! Such wonderful story and love and support! And I gotta admit Caz standing up to her MIL to protect Grace was pretty hit! 5 🌟

So, straight to the point, it’s definitely worth a read. This author actually has many books I’ve enjoyed. Honestly though, I have all the side-eye in the world for Grace. She was borderline problematic. My biggest issue with this book is the reinforcement of certain toxic behaviors in the LGBTQ + community: the selfish/curious straight woman, the doting, patient, friend-zoned dyke, it was here tenfold. Of course it was a bit more layered and nuanced but it was that painfully archaic trope at the center. It made it hard to root for them, especially during the traumatic moments. The readership is more evolved than this storyline.

I love everything Claire Highton-Stevenson writes and this book is no different. It brings two best friends, one gay one straight, together. Grace and Caz. Neither finding love. Grace wants to have a baby and because these two love each other, Grace wants to have it with her including the whole package, Getting married, getting a house and having a baby. Claire takes us back and forth from when the decision was discussed and forward to the wedding a year later. A writing technique that highlights the good, the bad and the sad. It worked. There was love, support, heartbreak and so much more. Leaving a few things unsettled with hope of more to come.

This was a decent read. While I did enjoy the best-friends dynamic, and the fake marriage, I thought it dragged in the second half of the book.

The relationship and chemistry was palpable, and realistic, I only wish it had been addressed MUCH earlier. That is to say,, not in the last 3%.

The biggest reason for 3 stars is that the ending was....supremely underwhelming. So many things were left unfinished, unresolved. I honestly wasn't expecting it to end where it did.

Emotional is the only way I can describe this beautiful new story from Claire. Grace & Caz are perfect together, & their relationship evolving into what it probably always was, & certainly what it was always meant to be, is beautifully sculpted. The concept is partly old yet infinitely new. Claire`s writing style is evolving & the emotions expressed during the saddest chapters had my eyes leaking as a result. What more can I say other than read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A heartfelt romance

This is such a beautiful, emotional, heartfelt story.

Grace wants to have a baby, and decides her best friend is the only person she wants to co-parent with. So even through she is straight, she decides to marry her lesbian best friend and have a child with her.

But is this all a convoluted excuse for the two of them to get together without having to examine and admit to their true feelings for each other?

This book deals with some tough topics really well. One of my favourite books by Claire Highton-Stevenson that I’ve read so far. Possibly my favourite!

4.0 out of 5 stars Grace & Caz
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 21, 2025
Told with the skill you’d expect from the very talented Claire H-S, one of the very best writers of sapphic romantic fiction, The Last To Know’ has a rather unique storyline in which bff’s, the very straight Grace and the very gay Caz, decide that being in their late thirties they should get married with the aim of having a baby together, no man involved apart from an anonymous donor. It’s not a fake marriage trope, in this story they genuinely get married because they love each other in every way, except from the lack of intimacy that one would normally associate with married couples. There is a feeling of genuine love between the couple that extends beyond the bounds of romantic love, and genuine heartbreak in the story that might be triggering for someone who’s experienced pregnancy issues. That part was beautifully and realistically handled by the author, but overall I think it’s the unusualness of the situation that threw me off slightly, so I can’t honestly give my usual 5 stars for Claire. I think you’ve got to suspend belief and logic and just go with the flow as it’s a novel still well worth reading, if only for the delightful reappearance of Alex and Morgan from ‘Euphoria’

I actually really liked the back and forth. The only thing I will say is I wish there was more, I wanted to see the afterwards. Great story though.
