Andrew Madigan had everything he ever wanted.
He’d worked hard to build this perfect little life. A stable relationship with a successful man. A beautiful home in a quiet suburb. And best of all, a job where he spent his days talking about literature.
Then his tenure was denied and, too quickly for him to stop it, everything crumbled.
Now, with his dreams in the dust and his confidence shattered, Andrew has one summer to figure out his next move.
Bulbs, Florida, is like no place Andrew’s ever known. It’s small and provincial. It’s hot as hell. Storms roll through every single day. But Andrew just has to keep his head down. Finish his book, find a new job, put things back on track. Easy-peasy.
He didn’t plan on making a friend.
Coley Brandt has a green thumb and an easy smile. He’s much younger than Andrew, but he puts Andrew at ease, makes him feel at home. Their time together reminds Andrew what having a purpose feels like.
Suddenly, this long, lonely summer feels too short.
But Coley has dreams of his own, and they’re a million miles away from the life Andrew’s trying to get back.
Maybe this is just a summer fling. Maybe, like the lightning, it’s only meant to be glorious for a moment before it disappears.
Or maybe it’s something more.
Too Like the Lightning is a steamy small-town, age-gap romance. It’s perfect for lovers of second chances, coffee on the back porch, thunderstorms, poetry, and happily ever afters. 85,000 words.

About the author

Having lived in Miami, Chicago, and NYC, I eventually ended up twenty minutes from where I was born, in Nowhere, Virginia, where the days are quiet and the stars are bright. I share a big old farmhouse with my unbelievably supportive family, a terrorist cat, and the world’s most neurotic dog.
I am nerdy about lots of things, including but not limited to classical rhetoric, the lives of the saints, Egyptian mythology, Shakespeare, contemporary fantasy, and the Muppets. Nevertheless, I am fun at parties.
I like rainy days, long drives, and cuddling. I drink more coffee than I ought.
I write everything from gay erotica with a D/s edge to sweet-with-heat MM romance. I hope you enjoy it.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2022I feel like my words wouldn't do justice to the perfection that this story is. I finished the book 3 days ago, but I still think about it every day and in every hour. I just can't let the characters and their story go, and I find myself in a need of re-read it right now. Is it possible to feel this strongly? To want to re-read it after just finishing it? To fall in love with people who aren't real, just words and emotions on pages?
I fell in love with this story sometime in the early chapters. When I found out that Andrew, whom POV we see the story, is the older one in this age-gap relationship. When I found out that Andrew isn't perfect and he suffers deeply. When I saw that Andrew is seeing himself old (at 34) and unattractive? Anyway, when I saw Andrew, when I really saw him, I fell in love.
Then came Coley, and he felt the pull too.
Coley is 20, and as we're seeing the story from Andrew's POV, we don't know that Coley is straight or not, just assume as Andrew does. And Andrew's gaydar suggests that Coley is straight... ;)
The story is written with beautiful - not kidding, beautiful words. Travis writes so beautifully and so deeply emotional. I loved reading this book, every page is a gem. The world and character building, the emotional arc, the romance and the erotica - wow, the erotica! It was so pure and REAL!
Loved how they got friendlier slowly and how cute Coley was with Andrew. Loved how Andrew was anxious but deep down was so hot for Coley and couldn't wait to put his hand on him, or vice versa.
And when the cat was out of the bag... wow. I didn't see that hotness coming. Andrew's depression and anxiety with his job and his love life (or ex-boyfriend) was so well portrayed. Coley's friends and job was quite different but they were well written too and I enjoyed the gardening stuffs. The 14 year age gap doesn't look as big, especially seeing that Andrew is only 34 (which is NOT old!), but I loved how it was portrayed. Andrew was concerned (while he forgot that he had a bigger age-gap with his ex-boyfriend), while Coley not so much.
The casual things they did, being naked in a house, eating breakfast, laying in bed, going out in the rain, sex in the garden... :) All of these made the story more real. And the 4th of July day... ahhhh. The strawberries!♥
The ending was super sweet. It has the awaited drama, because no HEA is worth a damn without fighting for it, but it was so greatly written too and with perfect emotional background. Nothing and no one was perfect but they got to their HEA and it was worth everything. (but I'm a little concerned about Andrew's decision, because earlier he said to Coley that being a teacher is what he is and loves doing, so... what now?)
This whole story is so real, both the characters and the setting they are living in. You feel you could meet them on the street, hug them and talk to them. This story is the realest thing I've read in a while.
Travis' magic is an added bonus to this story, because without it, it would be just another age-gap romance with depression and anxiety. There are hundreds of stories out there with this, but somehow this stands out. I love the way Travis writes and how he uses the perfect words. Beautifully written is the perfect description for it.
Gender and sexuality of the author is the last I think about when I'm reading a story, but sometimes you can just tell if it's written by a gay male author, it's more authentic and more life and real like. And I loved this fact in this book.
Oh, my god. I knew I won't shut up about this book, but wow, it was a long review. I just can't wait for it to release and for everyone to read it, because it's the best thing that could happen to you. READ IT.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2022Andrew's life seems to be falling apart. First he lost his teaching job at a small college when the staff had to be downsized, and that lead to the breakup of his relationship with his partner, who also happened to be the department head. To help him get some distance and a new perspective, Andrew's best friend offers the use of her husband's old family retreat in a small Florida town for the summer. On arrival at the small house in the middle of nowhere, he's greeted by the stunningly beautiful son of the caretaker, who shows him around and seems just as sweet as he looks. There's definitely a mutual attraction, but the age gap as well as the limited time Andrew will be around holds him back.
In some ways, “Too Like the Lightening” reminds me of an American version of the recently reviewed Davo. In broad outlines, they're very similar: Two men from very different worlds who can't help but give in to an irresistible attraction to each other despite the limited time they seem destined to have together. But, beyond the broad stroke similarities these are two very different stories.
The book is entirely from Andrew's point of view. A bit beaten and battered by life, he is a sympathetic character. We get a rather vivid picture of someone who probably lives in his own head just a little bit too much. He's certainly a flawed hero, but it's still easy to appreciate the seemingly no-win situation he finds himself in with Corley.
We only get to know Andrew's love interest, Corley, through Andrew's eyes. Even discounting Andrew's very rose-tinted perceptions, the young man seems very sweet. He's depicted as full of youthful exuberance and optimism, although by then end I got the impression that perhaps Corley was probably the more mature one in the relationship. That seems to be a common aspect of age-gap relationships even in the real world.
The Big Dramatic Event of this story is baked into the plot from the very beginning. It's no surprise, as the characters even agonize over it as the book progresses. What keeps you turning the page, or swiping left in the e-book, is seeing how it will play out. It definitely didn't go exactly the way I expected, which made it all the better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite, lush, perfect
Oh I just loved this.
It reminded me of reading a Roan Parrish which is the highest praise. The wordery was sublime, the feelings were delicious and the author does that magic thing in a romance where we all know an HEA is coming but somehow you're still anxious at how it's going to happen, who's going to stop being an idiot first? And how??? That's no mean feat.
This book was a joy. Andrew and Coley are both loveable and their growing feelings for one another are tangible even when neither of them dares say it aloud.
I read this on KU. I'm about to buy a digital copy and I'm adding the paperback to my birthday wishlist. I shall add this author to my very short one-click no questions asked list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic story!
This is the first book I’ve read by Beaudoin and I’m already chafing at the bit to get to another one.
Poor Andrew.... reeling after losing his academic contract and foreseeing only a lonely summer ahead with too many questions about his future and no answers whatsoever, and then there’s Coley who (subtly) bursts into Andrew’s life with enthusiasm and optimism for his future, and it’s heartwarming to be a part of the reading-audience that watches how these two people fall in love. Oh there’s bumps along the way, but that’s what makes the story intense and captivating. All in all, it’s a wonderful story.
And thanks to the author for making it available on KU.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written, lovely romance
I adored this book, the author's writing style, and Andrew and Coley's story. The characters and their stories felt so relatable and true. This book was so soothing that it made me want to run away from my own job and start my own landscaping business.

5.0 out of 5 stars An author Who can write
The book writing is sophisticated, the descriptions of the nature surrounding the two MC are enchanting and fascinating. A slow burn love growing while swimming in a pond or dancing in the rain. A lot of sex, possibly too much, a real dissonance with the poetical ambiance. I will follow this author, because he really can write.

4.0 out of 5 stars not just a summer fling
What happens when college professor takes refuge in rural Florida for the summer after his life in Virginia implodes, and starts putting his pieces back together. He starts a summer fling with a younger man, and stumbles into forever.
Wow, I loved this. It’s told in first person, singular POV. The pacing and plotting is good, lovely character development, and the author does a really great job conjuring time, place, and the MCs feelings, what he’s living through and struggling with.
