Born in Fire: An Epic Space Opera Odyssey Series (The Long Way Home Book 3) Kindle Edition
Both Jan and the Penguin need to rise like phoenixes from the flames. There’s only one way to do it, and that’s to make a deal with the Dark. Jan and Bjorn must continue their mission, pursued by both pirates and officials, and diverted by other demands.
Everything seems to come together unexpectedly. A daring theft gives them the key to succeed, but to unlock the data, they need to travel to a place that they thought only existed in bar-room tales. There, Jan must listen to voices from her past, look into the mirror of her soul…
And lay her life on the line again.

About the author

Author of the long running Urban Fantasy 'Bite Back' series and the Science Fiction series 'Among the Stars' and 'The Long Way Home'.
Mark was born in Africa and left out in the sun too often.
An early interest in philosophy and psychology was adequately exorcised by tending bars. And while trying to enroll in a class to read Science Fiction full time, he ended up taking an engineering degree which splendidly qualified him to move into marketing. That in turn spawned a late onset career in creative writing.
When not working, Mark gets high by the slightly less conventional means of a small microlight aircraft, or down and dirty on a mountain bike.
He lives with his family in the south of England, but can often be found in the Rockies.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSpoiler alert, the story does not end here. I predict There will probably be more than one book to follow. A little less action and more complex plot development that the first two books in the series but still very thrilling and satisfying. Characters are Great. Narration is top notch. And no language or proofreading errors!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe Long Way Home series is the second Henwick series I've loved. This one is Space Opera at its finest, with all that means - characters you love and adventures that thrill.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSidequests continue to complicate Jan & Bjorn's mission to bring
back vital terraforming tech to their struggling homeworld. After
having taken on a princess-in-(secret)-exile as crew, and undoing
the revolution in her system, the "Acid Penguin" is in dire shape
and getting repairs puts the crew further in hock and down the route
of becoming covert pirate-hunters for the Xians, who, while they
are generally decent sorts, have their own motivations and internal
divisions, putting the "Penguin"'s original mission pretty far down
on the list of things they worry about.
Leading to Jan and her cohort undertaking a dangerous mission to a
planet of tech-gurus who may be able to decrypt vital data, but who
may also be experimenting with forbidden AI tech and who may have
their own reasons for their guests to stay permanently.
Good fun, and the end notes make clear something I had not realized
before: Jan & Bjorn's adventures happen in the same universe as
Henwick's "Name" books (though considerably earlier on the timeline).
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI love the characters. I love how they move through challenges. Yes, this is space opera with deus ex whatever all over the place but it is a delight to have it all play out. And now I really need the next book please. :)
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI'm already a big fan of Mr. Henwick's 'Bite Back' series (if you don't have it, stop here and get it), but I wanted to get a few books into 'The Long Way Home', originally released as a serial, to see if his excellent writing translated into a different style. I'm happy to say, it does! The main character, Jan, and the alternate, Bjorn, are two soldiers plucked as kids from a planet with a religious fundamentalist society to serve in the Space Marines in exchange for funds their planet critically needs. Six years later (the government unilaterally extended their 3-year enlistments), they discover that the government has screwed them over again by way of payment, and the processessors the colony was sold are the wrong type. This starts a desperate race to get enough funds to save the colony and a series of adventures that are realistic, tightly written, and exciting reads. I initially found the technique of alternating viewpoints by chapter a bit jarring, but it supports a more complex and nuanced storyline than a single-viewpoint narrative, which I appreciate. I'll definitely continue buying the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLove the Bite Back series and when I saw these sci-fi books thought why not. So glad I did. Totally enjoyed reading these 3 books. The continuing battle to do the right thing and try save their community as well as saving everyone else is entertaining.
Can’t stop now need to know if they save their planet and find that lost colony.
Keep writing please Mark
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt’s emotionally astute, imaginative and engaging. The two MCs are great characters just trying to save their planet and community, as they fight their way through one disaster after another. If that isn’t conflict enough, their world was founded by members of the Church in Exile, a thoroughly isolationist and pacifist religious group, that is forced to send six members to be soldiers—in hopes their wages will buy the equipment needed to enable their planet to support human life. Nothing ever turns out as expected though, especially for this crew.
I felt that including the aspect of faith/religion in the story really deepened it a lot. The irreconcilable conflict between the MCs’ childhood beliefs and adult lifestyle/experiences really served the story and made for moments that were often deeply touching.
I am really looking forward to more books in the series and hope they come soon. Very Soon, please?
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis series, and this third installment, are a multilayered storyline, with intricate characters and a plot that appears simple but actually is not. We have new interactions with more unusual characters and a couple of worlds which are difficult to quantify. This book 3 ends on a positive note, but the story does not end here, it pauses enough to encourage the reader to continue.

5.0 out of 5 stars another great book! read it
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is not LitRPG but as a long time TTRPG gamer (40 years) it speaks to me! This is everything that I would want in a campaign.
From the MC’s interactions, to all the stunts they pull!! Mark Henwick you have done it again. Now hurry up and release book 4!

5.0 out of 5 stars I have a plan...
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe first book of the series felt different after re-reading the Amber Farrell series, I think the origjns as a series of "episodes" in the author's newsletters comes through. But the plan steadily came together, the penguins are marching in the same direction, and the following books developed into a great series. Can't wait for the next episode

4.0 out of 5 stars Another exciting read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNow that they have found allies, our unlikely heroes are zeroing in on the head of the pirate network but need help cracking the computer code. Unfortunately the only people that can help them have an agenda of their own. Once again Jan needs to use all her cunning to stay one step ahead of their enemies as well as rescue an AI from termination. A well written and fast paced storyline that kept me hooked until the very end. Cannot wait for the next book in this series. Highly recommend.
