First, I would like to start with the many things that I liked:
Just from the description of the book, I knew this would be right up my alley. Giant spiders, and other giant insects? Sounds like an old monster movie, and I was excited to dive right in!
The book starts off by providing a lot of background information. I feel like certain details could have been included more throughout the story. It was refreshing to see Evie, the main character, acting more rational than other scary story characters when she first sees the spider outside her window; she even has the sense of mind to take pictures of the spider just in case no one believes her story. It was refreshing to read a scary story that did not use clichés. The characters are smart! They take time to make plans, are able to unlock a door and leave a house while under attack, and start a car without flooding it.
The first time I laughed out loud was after the spider breaks into Evie’s room and is hiding somewhere inside. Maria (the mother) seems worried about the predicament, but not too worried. She offers for Evie to share her bed for the night. If I had been Evie, I would have left Michigan and headed for Ohio. I spent quite a few pages waiting for the spider to randomly appear in scenes that took place in Evie’s house.
There were some issues I ran into while reading:
At school, before things get a whole lot worse, Evie starts to hallucinate giant bugs killing the people around her. I know it’s supposed to show how tired and stressed she is about what is going on, but it seemed out of place, especially considering that her hallucinations do not reoccur.
There are character deaths in this book, but I will not be spoiling anymore for you readers. I will say that the characters who do die, do so very quickly. These quick deaths also lack details, which is nice for readers who don’t like over the top gore, but it does make it easy to miss when a character dies. There was a time or two I had to go back and reread a page or so to make sure that character was actually dead.
Lastly, there are a few editing mistakes, including many unneeded dashes and commas that occasionally took me away from the story. I think the book needed one more edit to catch mistakes (pg. 83, Kelly and Steve hug Kelly, pg. 91 has a formatting error, and pg. 129 uses the word ‘instinct’ instead of ‘extinct’).
When I had about 40 pages left, I had to pause my reading. But I found myself thinking about the book while I was away and I was excited to get back to it and discover how it could possibly end in so few pages!
The book ends on a sad, but hopeful note. I liked the lack of information, and the idea that there are still giant spiders and insects out there. The story leaves itself open for a sequel, and if there ever is one, I know I will definitely read it!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2023I'm not going to ruin the book for anyone but I am going to say this book will have you wanting more. I normally never finish a whole book without wanting to take a few day break. I read this book with no break but pizza rolls. Great job to the author I would highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to get lost in another realm.
