The Nothing Men: A Post Apocalyptic Dystopian Zombie Thriller Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 169 ratings

What happens when zombies recover?

Three years ago, the Orchid virus swept the globe, turning millions of people into violent predators known as Redeyes and raising fears of mankind’s extinction.

But as a war that had no precedent raged, the hordes of the infected slowly began to recover. Eight months after it began, the pandemic ended, leaving behind a battered world and millions of survivors haunted by the memory of what they had done in the grips of the infection.

Ben Sullivan is one of those Redeyes. He’s lost his family, his home, his entire life. So when an act of kindness gives him a chance at a fresh start in a community of those like him, he jumps at the opportunity.

But his new friends may be concealing explosive information about humanity's brush with the apocalypse, information that the authoritarian government would just as soon keep hidden forever.

Branded as a terrorist by the U.S. Department of Reconstruction & Recovery and a traitor by his fellow Redeyes, Ben must stay one step ahead of a relentless Reconstruction agent pursuing him and unravel a conspiracy that threatens to change America forever.

This is the first and only zombie thriller I’ve read that deals only with the aftermath of the breakout. I found it to be clever, well-written, and a refreshing break.

David Jessie cranks out another apocalyptic tale putting one against the government. After the world suffers a global pandemic virus causing infected victims to attack uninfected people, one survivor takes on the government's new department who don't want the problem to end. This is nothing new in this field. The ending was not believable and easy to predict.

Imagine a "near apocalyse" where in the peak of the terror of zombie like infected, with millions infected and turned into beings capable of violent atrocities without caring, with half the world dead...and it just stops. The infected recover and return to normal mental faculties, albeit able to remember every atrocity comitted by their hands.

A page turning premise is found in the first 3 acts, particularly the description by the main character about what it was like to be infected and to recover. The author wisely intersperses his back story with his current phlight in a world that doesnt know what to do with the recovered (although i would have liked to hear more about the hero after he returned home post recovery)

The author squanders this incredible premise with a final act that has a weak endgame. I ended up sympathizing with the villain and his very legitimate fear of the recovered descending into violent madness again, when the writing was pushing me not to. He used weak tropes of villains flat out Monologueing and sudden out of nowhere aids to the main heroes.

This is not your average post apocalyptic story! Kazzie explores what our nation would look like if people were infected with a “super bug” virus, that creates zombie-like symptoms. The unique spin? What if those infected recovered after essentially destroying life as we know it? How would they reintegrate into society? How would friends and family treat them? How would the government deal with such a massive crisis? This story answers all of that and more. A vivid look into what our world would become in light of such a catastrophe. You’ve got to read it to believe it!!

David Kazzie takes us along for a fast-paced, well-written ride with The Nothing Men.
This book is a new take on the genre- the author tells the story of a man who recovers from a virus that made him into a violent killer. The man, Ben Sullivan, once had a family, a nice home, and a successful career.
After the virus he wakes up to a very different America- he’s now part of a group of marginalized citizens who aren’t trusted. Those who had been afflicted by the virus aren’t hired for jobs and have to scrape out a meager existence. His family is scared of him and he can’t go home. Ben also has to struggle to live with the memories of things he did while he was infected by the virus.
The plot is chilling in its outline of how a government can persuade its citizens to get on board with inhumane practices by playing on their fears.
I hope Kazzie follows this up with a sequel.
    Highly recommend.

I enjoyed this book. The story was a unique take on the typical zombie apocalypse. The characters were well developed and I grew to like them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A post apocalyptic thriller with a twist

What would you to if you woke up to find you'd lost your family, your friends and were feared by everyone you met all whilst being marginalised by the government. This is exactly what happens to Ben after he wakes up from the Orchid Virus, not only a pariah but suffering from flashbacks of the terrible things he whilst under the influence of the virus.

Trying to piece his life together by any means necessary a chance event leads Ben to fall in with a group of people who drag him into a world that makes his life a whole lot harder.

Hunted and hated by everyone Ben must fight to uncover the truth, and, make sure everyone hears it before it's too late.

This is one of those books that as soon as you have to put it down you want to pick it right back up again. It's a refreshing take on this genre and I don't recall any other books that had any sort of functioning government which adds a new twist on things.

Highly recommended and if you like this I'd also recommend the Immune series by the same author (and vice versa)
