The Other Side of Here
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
“I’m a man of regrets, my love. I can always think of a thousand ways I could have done things better. But I don’t regret him.”
Married for nearly two decades, Luca and Sebastion know what they want from life and from love, but they certainly don’t expect the shake-up that is Alexander Thomas. Their marriage has been open since the start, but it’s not until Luca sends a wrong text that they realize there might be room for something new. Something a little bit more permanent. The only problem is, Xan’s already taken, and the man he’s with is dangerous.
Xan’s life has been off the rails since his parents died, and with his current relationship turning toxic, he’s not sure he wants to inflict his chaos on the lives of two men who don’t deserve it. Luca and Sebastion are worthy of so much more, and Xan isn’t sure he’ll ever deserve the chance at their unconditional love. After all, he’s been engaged to a man who can’t stand him for two years, and he still can’t find the courage to leave. But when things go from bad to worse, Xan knows something has to give, and he realizes then the only difficult step to take is the first one.
Some relationships are meant for moments, and some are meant for forever, but none of these men know how their story will end until they’re standing together, on the other side of here.
The Other Side of Here is a MMM stand-alone romance with a happily ever after. Please see forward for content warnings.

I love M/M/M books. Open relationships, throuples, and the like are my favorite type of books to read so I was really looking forward to this one.
Sebastion and Luca have been together for close to twenty years, they have a bit of an unconventional relationship, one that doesn't always make sense to their friends. Through it all, they have each other. You can see that in the notes that they write to each other at the beginning of each chapter. The love between these two bleeds off the pages. It's that love that helps them fall for Xan. It might not make sense, but after reading the book, it's clear that if Luca and Sebastion didn't have the love and respect for each other that they do, they wouldn't have been able to open their hearts to Xan.
Poor Xan, my heart absolutely broke for him. He needed so much love and care. I hated seeing what he was going through. I'm not going to lie, reading books with this subject matter is hard for me. Until you live it you don't actually know how hard it is to do what Xan ultimately does. He not only removes himself from a very difficult situation, but he opens his heart once again.
This book hurt. A lot. Not only Xan's situation but the love these three have for each other. It's beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. Because sometimes love isn't enough. Sometimes love isn't forever. Sometimes it's not the right time for love. I really love how EM Lindsey handled all the turbulent emotions in this book. They could have easily made everything better by the power of love and the magic of sex, but they didn't. It's one thing I appreciate the most in their books. The emotions are real and they're not just brushed over.
I loved every single second of this book. Luca, Sebastion, and Xan don't have a perfect relationship, they've all been hurt and haphazardly put back together, but that's what makes them all great together. The Other Side of Here is a beautiful book about love and life and finding yourself at the right time in the right place.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2024Okay so first and foremost this is a slow burn but not for all the best reasons. I’ve never seen a healthier dynamic represented in a romance novel. We love taking time to heal even when it’s hard. I only wish the ending wasn’t so rushed.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2021I am a HUGE fan of male x male romance novels, and I just recently discovered E.M. Lindsey. And I am soooo happy I did. The writing style is incredible. The stories are just captivating. While, in my opinion, nobody tops my biker boys (Broken Chains series, I'm so in love with Smokey, Kicks, and Gunner) this book is a very close second to best story ever. The story line is original. Xan, Bas, and Luca are normal and relatable people (as opposed to the young perfect runway models most MM romances portray). I will definitely, definitely be reading this again. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2021What an absolutely amazing story this was. I always know I'm going to love a book by this author before I even crack it open but this one was just so beautiful. The growth and real development of the relationships between these men was heartbreaking and sweet at the same time. Everything happened exactly as should and Xan's growth was the best part of the story. My only regret is I'll never get a Luca hug :) Can't recommend this book highly enough.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2021** spoiler alert ** When I finished this book, I needed some time to think of how I should put my thoughts into words.
On the one side it was an enjoyable book, on the other side it had too many things that didn't work for me quite well. A 3 star rating still means I enjoyed it, and I think that's the overall feeling I'm left with after finishing.
This was my first book by E.M. Lindsey and their writing style works for me. It was easy to read and because of that, I was pulled into the story easily. All three characters were nice and sweet, felt organic and true. There was quite some more angst than I expected with Xan's ex Max, but the struggles he went through were very realistically described and they made me feel for him. It's an understatement to say Max wasn't a very nice person to him, but all the excuses Xan used for staying around and being in a toxic, unhealthy relationship for so long, seemed legit. It was about his own insecurities (a lot of them caused by the way Max treated him) and finding his goal in life, the fear of claiming his spot in this universe.
But what didn't work for me was the development of the relationship between the three men. It felt too much like insta-love (which really is my least favorite trope), because to me it seemed Luca's intense caring and worries came much too soon. Logically Xan cared for them, because he was in a bad place and Luca and Sebastion were there for him, trying to help him and comfort him. He needed people like that in his life. But the falling in love was, again, too soon. I never felt like they had the deep connection I needed for them to have to feel their longing and emotions.
And at some point I had a feeling all the excuses about Xan not being ready and about Luca blaming himself for pushing Xan away, became a bit repetitive.
There was very few time where they all three were together on page and making their relationship work. And even though there was a HEA, I wasn't left with a feeling of satisfaction.
I have to admit that towards the end I did start skimming a bit, because it took too long for them to get together and I wanted to be there already. And on another personal note: I disliked Xan's name. Alexander would have been just fine for me. Or Alex. But I found Xan a bit annoying. Like I said, that's just me.
So, all in all, this story had it's good and it had it's bad. I don't regret reading it, it was still enjoyable, but with too many things that didn't work for me personally.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2021EM Lindsey can write an incredibly emotional and unpredictable (in the best ways possible) story that lingers long after you read the last word of it. This one is going to take me some time to digest emotionally. The writing was exquisite, and the characters were so expertly crafted. I’m not sure I’ve read a better example of a loving, complex polyamorous relationship, nor a better example of integrating and healing from interpersonal violence. It’s an intense read, yet also incredibly hopeful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best. Story. Ever (although I’ve probably said that before about Lindsey’s books).
“You’ll never reach the other side of here if you don’t start walking now.”
I have profound respect for authors who share with their readers snippets of their personal life struggles, and Lindsey is no exception. They say that this story was fourteen years in the making, and it’s evident that Lindsey wrote from their heart in the telling of what was to become the love story between Alexander, Sebastian, and Luca.
While domestic abuse and its resulting emotional trauma are horrific, this story speaks to the courage of one’s individual spirit, and with the love and support of special people, there will be “the other side” as we make the journey to emotional health and happiness.
PS to the author: Thank you for selling this book on KU. The message of this story will stay with me for a very long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautifully written book about abuse victims
This is a beautiful slow burn about first love, young love, abusive relationships, polyamory, finding love again , found family. There are so many feels and you really get to know the characters well throughout the book. Very moving and heartbreaking but great at the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful
This was a very thoughtful and emotional book. Alexander (Xan) is in his early 20s and struggling with an abusive relationship when a phone number mix-up leads to him meeting Luca, and then Sebastion, an older happily married couple who are also open to opening up their relationship.
There were several things that gave me pause when I first saw them - the potential power unbalance inherent between an older couple with a lot more relationship experience versus a young man who is currently in a toxic relationship and who has limited experience, especially about polyamory. However the book does address this directly and is very aware, and I found the discussion and recognition of their three different experiences and perspectives very thoughtful and considered.
The relationship negotiation of polyamory was something I enjoyed a lot, as again it emphasised a sense of balance and recognised the importance of communication in a way that really appealed to me. I found it very helpful that although Luca and Sebastion had had various types of non monogamous relationships, they were also new to the concept of a permanent, committed triad.
I liked the recognition of aging and love of older bodies too! Always love the 'not there it'll put my back out' talk!
This is very much a slow burn, which was definitely required, and for me had a hopeful HFN ending, which set up the hope and communication needed for a very long term relationship (although ymmv, others may see it as a more straightforward HEA)
CW: Toxic relationship, abusive relationship, gaslighting, homophobia, age difference
*Thank you to the author for the ARC*

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved this book
Another well written book from EM Lindsey. Luca & sebastion were a great couple. Sebastion had endured so much pain to be comfortable in life & his relationship. Yet they both had so much love in their hearts to share with another.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth it
This book is definitely a slow burn, it's emotional and fraught with a sense of hopelessness. It's not all sunshine and roses, things have to get worse, hearts are broken before things can get better, before people can heal. I really think this helps the story to be authentic and believable and overall what leads it to be enjoyable.
