Abysmal Accusation is a great courtroom scene where ex-partners tell their versions of events in court. The stories are different, but overall tell the same tale of failed attempts to get back items. It’s short, but well-written and a very interesting concept that could easily be expanded upon. You will spend the entire story unsure who to believe and which parts of whose story is right, until the ending hits you!
Grieving Governors is the second story in the collection, and it is connected to Butler’s book Identity Crisis, only this time from the point of view from the scientists behind the changes. Having read Identity Crisis first definitely helped me to understand the story better, and I recommend you read that book first before reading this story, as you get a better into why these tests are being done to children. A great companion piece for sure!
The Taste of Tranquility is the last story, and it revolves around a friend group. After an argument, one of the friends, Bobby, moves out and a new roommate (Elizabeth) moves in. Elizabeth suggests pranking him and in general giving him a hard time. It escalates into multiple job losses and a mugging gone wrong. While Bobby does have his character flaws, it is hard not to feel bad for him. The other characters think what they’re doing is all in good fun, when in reality they are the villains of this story and should have stopped before it was too late!
Overall, all three of these stories are a fun read. The blank pages between the titles and the story was a little odd, but that was the only negative thing I have to say about this collection. If you’re interested in a variety of bite-sized stories, this collection is for you.
