Editorial Reviews

Review

This series presents a fascinating and original take on the zombie apocalypse story. I was drawn in from the opening scene...and I found myself instantly connecting with the fate of the Spencer family. The writer did an excellent job interspersing the family's story with details about the broader world. Every time it seemed that something was understood or under control in that sphere, the story would shift to reveal a new wrinkle in the plot.

I loved this book overall & to me the ending was very satisfying. I started off thinking I would give it 5 stars but by the middle dropped it to 4. When the vampires arrived it came perilously close to dropping to 3 (personal taste thing, I don't like vampire/werewolf stories give me ghosts, ghouls, zombies - almost anything else in fact) However, it picked up again & I loved the mystical/supernatural stuff. Occasionally some of it seemed a little bit show offy but I find I can overlook the negatives of any story or movie if it's good enough, and this was. The digressions can be annoying but I find the same with Stephen King, and while they are annoying on the first read, because you're wanting to find out what happens next, on subsequent reads I think they add more depth to a story. I bought this as an ebook & like it enough that I'm going to order the paperback for when I read it again. Because I will read it again. This Plague Of Days is comparable to King's The Stand or Robert R McGammon's Swan Song.

This was an interesting new take on the end-of-the-world theme that so many recent books are based on. It was well written and the characters were well developed and believable. For the most part, they were likeable, and the ones that needed to be despised were true to type. At the end, however, I was left a little disappointed that the message always seems to be people are ruining the planet and we just need to eliminate most of them to get things back into balance. When there are not enough people to do the basic labor of survival, nothing else gets done either, no writing, no painting, no inventing, no innovations. However, I think you will enjoy this book. It has enough scary stuff and enough thought provoking stuff to keep you reading right up to the finish.

I really, really like Robert's way of writing. The book was so well done. The character building was wonderful - you really feel something for each character and can place yourself in their shoes. I am a lover of paranormal, dystopian novels and depth of story as well as intelligence in writing style, and Robert has it all. Humor, wit, depth, intellegence and an awesome way with words/writing. If you love Steven King's type style (think The Stand - but better), if you love stories where you can "see" what the author is meaning for you to see in the book, you will love his style. I'm off to go read his The Haunting Lessons book, which I'm sure I'll love as well! Try This Plague Of Days. It really is worth it!

This is a really good three book series. I came to it thinking it was a zombie apocalypse series but they don’t play a particularly main role, which is fine. Just wasn’t what I was expecting. So the main story revolves around humans and “evolved humans.” Other reviews liken the series to The Stand and Sixth Sense combined, and I can see that. It’s well written. There is pretty good character development all around. Definitely gory at times. The main character is interesting and well written as a “on the spectrum” character. As he fixates on language, I like the various plays on English words, many I never thought of. I took Latin in high school, so I enjoyed the Latin phrases hinting at parts of the later story.

I read the first part of this trilogy on it's own and I really enjoyed it. Shortly after I came across the complete trilogy all in one book thinking it would be great to not have to go looking any further in order to read the whole trilogy. Unfortunately where the first book was intriguing with a unique cast of characters and an unusual plot that seemed full of adventure and potential. The middle part of the trilogy started off strong as the characters and plot continued to evolve but as the second book went along it began to feel as if things were doing down and dragging on. By the third book the great plot and incredibly well developed characters became lost in a myriad of details, and far too many other dragged out concepts. I found myself more wondering when it would end rather than how it would end. Too bad because I had so enjoyed the beginning of this trilogy and had high hopes for the rest of it. Unfortunately for me, the longer the story went on, the more all the parts of it that had so engaged me became more and more diluted to the point where everything that mattered most to me about the books seemed to have been taken away. I was really disappointed because as I said before this was a trilogy that had incredible potential.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! Chute's Magnum Opus.

It took me a while to warm to this novel. I read it over an extended period. The whole notion of a dystopian zombie universe did not really appeal to me. But, Robert Chazz Chute is such a good writer, I knew that if I stuck with it, I'd be rewarded. And I was. I'm tempted to use an expression like "sprawling epic," to describe what I've just finished reading, but, although "epic" is appropriate, "sprawling," with its sense of messiness and lack of control is absolutely wrong. This is a carefully written novel from beginning to end, with events occurring as far back as in "Season One" having their payoffs in the final chapters. Their are surprises that I had not the anticipated in the slightest that suddenly recast elements from earlier in a new light.

Chute has a penchant for writing horror, and although there are some horrible scenes in the book (as well as numerous humorous ones, too), ultimately it is a story of hope. Don't worry; you will not be smothered under a treacly, sentimental ending, but you will be provoked to think about what's truly important in life. I am grateful to have read this wonderful story.

Really enjoyed this book. Not your usual post apocalyptic thriller. Which made it all the more interesting. I really enjoyed the extremes of humanity displayed throughout.
