- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNo one seems to know that something is going wrong in Portland. Everything think & everyone is being overwhelmed by sick people who die & are reanimating.
Our cast of characters are evolving from our author. Quite a few, but each page is clearer as to whom they are. A retired army grunt, a black man he meets at a police station, a homeless gentleman & the cowboy who saves his life. Three young people, an overweight sissy (?) Who plays computer games, the college student who feels sorry for him, & the ice cold blonde who takes no prisoners.
Let's not forget the doctor & her patient saved in an overrun hospital. We also have the stay at home mom who killed her husband & son and is in a major depression.
They all finally come together. But in their haste to get away from the annies & a crazed Japanese musican named Ace & his band of delinquents ,confiscate a Stryker from the military.
Our friends are trying to escape from an overrun colosseum only to be close to said Stryker when the military takes no prisons & downs the stolen Stryker. In the confusion one of our would be heroes is badly injured & will not survive.
(don't know the author killed this character, seemed to be a good leader . Maybe the next book will answer that question.
Loved the book. Tremendous book by the author...👍
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe good:
The story is great. The zeal that the author has for describing the gore and brutality of his world is great if you're a zombie fan. The characters are also enjoyable and well developed enough for you to feel it when bad things happen to them.
The Bad:
I'm not sure who was the editor/proof reader..... but they suck at their job and probably need to find a new line of work. Typos and words that are only partially printed ( such as the word "end" obviously being what was meant to be printed but only "e" appears in the text ) I always find this to be jarring in a novel and it pulls me out of a what is a very enjoyable story. I'm sure this point won't be an issue for everyone but, when the author writes about military rank / time in service it is obvious that he has no military experience and didn't consult anyone who does. He also swapped some characters ranks back and forth in the same chapter.
Overall this is one of the best zombie books I have read. I enjoy how character stories do not go as other books and movies have conditioned us to. I order the next two books with 70 pages left to go in this one........ hope they got a better proof reader.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseZombie and apocalyptic novels are a guilty pleasure of mine, and I've read many. This book (and series) stands out with characters you care about (and many you dislike) with unexpected twists and turns.
Enjoyable from start to finish. Read the first and if you like that, know that they stay as good with the rest! Recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2023Format: KindleVerified Purchasei actually started this book thinking it was another i'd been planning to read. upon realizing this, i almost put it down, but i got attached to a couple of characters & was intrigued by the way they were written, & then i burned through the whole book in around 5 hours. the characters are incredibly well-written, the world-building is impeccable. this is, hands down, one of the best apocalyptic reads i've had in a while. i am literally about to start the second book because i simply have to know what happens next!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI loved this book. Truly a nail biter at every turn of the page. Couldn't put it down!! If you like apocalyptic books, I would highly recommend this. I quit reading zombie books along time ago. All of them were a been there done that kind of book. This one offers a fresh perspective on the subject and isn't like all the other ones!!! Absolutely well written.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2025Format: KindleVerified Purchase2.5 Overall, unfortunately, there is nothing new here. There were very few truly good or likable characters. I ended up not caring who lived or died. The ending was abrupt and open-ended.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGreat series, great writing, lots of typical zompoc situations as usual (with generic zompoc) but it's well done and doesn't go on forever with each segment you've read/seen a dozen times over.
Just be ready - the books start at $3 which feels "indie" to me, where I like it, but the cost quickly ramps up to $10 per book which is far from indie to me. So be ready to pay quite a bit more than you'd usually pay for an indie series to read on.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI always like starting series that have solid origin stories, learning their rules and conventions. This one was a solid start to a great series. I like how everyone had stories, all of varying lengths. There were a few I thought would last and a few I thought would end quickly, but I’m excited to see what happens next!

5.0 out of 5 stars An action packed adventure
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really enjoyed this perspective of the beginning of the zombie apocalypse. It's an adventure filled with fascinating characters that are likeable and relatable in a setting that is easy to imagine. Well written and hard to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastically written zombie novel.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis Rotten World is something I bought on a whim. I don't often read horror, for some reason, but I have read a few zombie novels here and there and loved them.
What really grabbed me was the very human situations this story starts with. A homeless man sleeping under a bridge, a man in a bar drinking after a long day before going home to his wife and child and a gamer insulting people as he kills them in Call of Duty.
Then all hell breaks loose. The danger, the fear and the risks are something I felt. Every time. Whenever it seemed that characters were stuck I was thinking "Well, how are they going to get out of this? Or am I reading another death of someone I love so far?"
And make no mistake, without spoiling it too much, nobody seems safe in this first installment. There are situations where characters you think will live because they have a name and a personality, but no. They can and, in some cases, will die.
I also loved the change in who's perspective we're seeing the story from. One minute is Zeke, then Clara, then Joan and so on. Sometimes seeing the same situations from different angles and perspectives. It's fantastic and so well done. I always wonder who's side is going to be seen next.
On top of all of that, there is the evolving personalities of the characters. Rudy going from a rude, know-it-all gamer to a scared kid. Katie going from the fed up housewife to the seemingly-uncaring. Zeke being...well, Zeke in everything he does, but with evolving morals and thoughts. I love these characters and I hope that those that survive continue to evolve in a way that makes sense in a world that makes little to them, anymore.
And my final point: I love how the zombies are done. They have the trope of walking arms out. They shuffle and gurgle and moan. They're taken out by a shot to the head or too hard a hit. But the rules of them are established so well. Even The Walking Dead's rules seem to be able to be bent somewhat for plot reasons, but here? It's established and it's kept to. Bites turn you, death makes you become one, they can move underwater due to the lack of needing to breathe. Hell, even getting their blood in your eye will turn you. Just the way the rules of the zombies are set up is fantastic and something I have seen some zombie stories ignore, simply because "The reader knows the rules." Not without you telling us them. And we are told them here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome zombie fiction, with one small complaint
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI'm re-reading this series and had forgotten how enjoyable it was. Book 1 is a great depiction of the start of the zombie apocalypse. If you enjoy zombie fiction this one is a no-brainer.
My only complaint is it feels like it could use a review (or a second one) by an editor. There is often repetitive or redundant sounding text that takes me out of the story.
As an example: "They ran under the shadow of the bridge, and when they emerged into the sun, there was more sound behind them as more of the dead fell to the soft grass behind them." While technically correct, the use of "behind them" twice in the sentence is distracting and not needed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fan fiction
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNot bad but not great- written like fan fiction. I did finish it though but predictable and not very unique
