The Space Between (The Walsh Series Book 2) Kindle Edition
Patrick Walsh needs a win.
He needs a good year. He needs something to—finally—go his way.
After their father's slow, angry death, the Walsh family’s third-generation historic preservation architecture firm is back on its feet and Patrick finally stands at the helm.
Andy Asani is not what Patrick expected from an apprentice. First, she’s competent. Not just that, she’s scary-brilliant. Second, she’s obsessed with historic preservation—and the only person outside of Patrick's partners who shares his passion for crumbling buildings. And most troubling of all, he’s obsessed with her.
He doesn’t need her complicating his life but he wants her more than anything, and she might just cost him everything.
Andy Asani doesn’t want to fantasize about her boss.
She’s not that girl and she doesn’t want to turn into that girl. She’s too busy kicking ass at her coveted apprenticeship and exploring the best Boston has to offer in hot yoga and cool nightlife. She’s not going to throw any of that away because her boss won’t stop rolling up his shirtsleeves and glowering at her.
Until she throws it all away.
Their plans are about to undergo some major renovations.

GAH!!!!! Do I love me some Walshes…it’s like disgusting how much I love this series and I’m only two books in…two people! This is a seven-book series, do you understand how screwed I am!?!??! It’s a real and true problem…and I’m all about it. But…luckily, for once in my life, I’m being smart about this and I’m savoring the heck out of this family. After I finished Underneath It All , Lauren and Matt’s book, I realized that I was completely addicted…so I’ve rationed myself. It has yet to be seen how strong my will power is, but I waited 5-ish months between Matt and Patrick, so we’re calling that a victory. Considering Sam’s book is next…I’m not thinking I’ll be able to hold out long on the next Walsh indulgence, cause the addiction is real and true and freaking amazing. Alright…so if you have absolutely no idea what I am babbling on about - The Space Between is the second book in The Walshes Series…it can be read as a complete standalone but there is some overlap from the first book Underneath It All - it’s all completely explained but the character dynamics make it totally worth reading in order.
Andriel Ava Mazanderani Asani…yeah it’s a bit of a mouthful, but Andy suits her perfectly. Oh my goodness, what to do with Andy…part of me loved her to pieces and part of me still doesn’t know as much about her as I wanted to. She is a puzzle…unique and complex and different…which was a new experience for me in a heroine, because I was torn – I liked it and yet I needed more from her. In some respects she is an open book – her love for architecture and preservation, her quirky obsession for socks, her foodie tendencies….I loved learned all these things but I could feel so much more possibility and depth from her. I don’t really know how to quite explain it because I can think of ways she did open up but like with her past and her family, there is at least one big thing that we find out in passing (that she and Patrick had a convo about) and it’s something that I felt was pretty crucial to her character and I was sad not to have experienced that first hand. I was aching for more of a connection with Andy because I did really like her. But I can’t deny that I loved seeing her come to life with Patrick…she was a different person with him, more her and that was worth everything.
‘Patrick: Factors?
Andy: Yes
Andy: I'll tell you Friday night
Patrick: You're not giving me much
Andy: I've given you quite a bit
Andy: Probably too much
Patrick: I don't think so
Andy: That's just it, Patrick
Andy: I get the sense that there will never be enough for you’
Patrick Arden Walsh…a real live human version of Optimus Prime and I L-O-V-E-D every single freaking second of it. I adored Patrick from the very beginning and I couldn’t stop myself from letting that grow and blossom into this wild obsession of adoration. He was majestic…yes, I did love that he was a Rugby Sex God (stealing Andy’s words…but it paints quite the amazing visual image and I liked it a lot!) but it was so much more than that that made me love Patrick. His intelligence is off the charts…like blows my mind and kind of makes me drool a little bit. His tenacity and drive…his take charge attitude (really loved that!)…just every little ounce of his brain intrigued me to no end. Then his humor…his sharp wit and sarcasm…he had me cracking up constantly and there is nothing I won’t do for a man that can make me laugh. But good lord have mercy…Patrick’s heart is amazing…the way he loves his family, in their own particular brand of messed up love, it’s still all kinds of wonderful but especially the way he loved Andy…just ah-mazing.
‘Breaking our connection, I gazed into Andy's heated eyes and smiled when I saw her beautiful and flustered. She was different, at once dark and light, and a warm flush hinted at her cheeks.
"There you are," I whispered, my hands framing her face, my thumbs stroking her delicate cheekbones.
"I've been here the whole time."
"No," I murmured. "No, you don't let me see you."
Andy's lips pulled into that tiny smile, and she wrapped her hand around the nape of my neck, drawing me to her and capturing my mouth in a hungry kiss. Her lips communicated more in one kiss than any combination of words. She wanted this. She wanted me.’
Oh-em-gee…it doesn’t get any more perfect than Patrick and Andy…it was blatantly obvious from the start…the intellectual compatibility, how he challenged her and she loved exceeding his expectations…how passionate they were about preservation and that totally geeky architecture conversations they would have….and the shared love of cuisine, I could live for years on their lunch dates. Their sexual chemistry was off the charts...but it was only heightened by how in tune they were with each other. The angst and drama was mainly focused in Andy’s direction...I understood part of her reasoning, don’t get me wrong but her actions and what she was saying wasn’t always in line with each other…and it was frustrating for me because of the effect it had on Patrick – I’m sorry, I love that man and I hate to see him in pain. He never put himself out there…ever and the first time he does and he gets yanked around more times than a yo-yo! And even at the end…when everything blows up…I saw Andy’s point but most of what they were fighting about was miscommunication and hurt feelings and then she was just being flat out stubborn and I mainly wanted to smack her upside the head…God love her, she was the smartest ding dong ever.
"I want this. You. Us. I want the language that your eyes speak and all of your quirks, even if they drive me effing crazy. I want you to live here with me, I want you working next to me, and I want everyone to know. I want us to be like we are now, but… I don't want any more secrets."
I stared at him in the bright city darkness, blinking while his words caught fire in my belly. "I want that, too."
A dazzling, childlike smile filled Patrick's face, and he laced our fingers together. "Good.”
Kate Canterbary has got me by the lady balls and I’m so down with it. Her writing, her style, her flow, her characters, all of it is totally effortless and I cannot help but fall into it. I love the humor, the dialogue and the banter, the amazing connections between all of the characters, not even just the hero/heroine…it’s all magical. What makes this series stand apart from any other is this family…The Walshes. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve read series about families before and loved them…but the Walshes are different. They’re flawed but I love them because of their flaws…because their flaws make them even more amazing, which is saying a lot. I love this family so much…I mean we get a lot of Walsh family history in Underneath It All but there is so much more to go…and it’s hard, harder than I thought…but it only makes me love them more.
"I figured out I won't turn into a sadistic b________ if I lose you," I said against her racing pulse. "But I'll do whatever it takes to keep you. I love you too much to let you walk away." Her fingers curled around my cheek and I leaned into her caress. "I don't expect this to be easy, Andy, but you're it for me. And I think I might be it for you."
Looking up, a tiny smile pulled at her lips and she nodded.
I wish the ending had been drawn out just a little bit. The solution to everything was fine but I needed a little more resolution, a little more conversation and a little more time to really enjoy Patrick and Andy. Either way it still felt authentic to them…which is always very important to me. I can already tell this is one of those series where I’m going to fall deeper and more madly in love the further I get...and I’m already up to my eyeballs in adoration, so this is about to get fun! Sam is up next with Necessary Restorations and I’m really excited to see what happens with him – he’s a bit of a manwhore, which I love but he’s got a lot of history (he’s a Walsh – they’ve all got their issues, but Sam is a little more special)…so many opportunities and I’m pretty sure they’re going to shred my heart to pieces! #WalshLover
An apprenticeship under Patrick Walsh is all Andy ever wanted. She was already highly attracted to the man's mind and ideas and now she wants to literally be under him. Why did he have to be so so very attractive? Absolutely irresistible... Oh hell...
A delightful read, this second installment in The Walsh Family series is a grumpy/grumpier romance. It has the "forbidden" aspect of the mentor / mentee relationship but soon enough we see that it's Andy who holds all the power in the dynamic. I love their bickering and their inner monologues.
We get a lot of Walsh family goodness and, though it can be read as a standalone, you will appreciate it better if you read the previous book.
Narration: Narrated by the same duo as book one, Christian Fox gives a completely different performance! Talk about talent! Lucy River is also great as Andy.
Rep and possible triggers: Andy is half Jewish, half Persian. Toxic relationship with a parent; feelings of inadequacy; secondary character suffers from diabetes and other chronic illnesses
In Book Two of The Walsh Series, we get Patrick and Andy Asani a sharp as a tack architectural student that has her eye on working for Walsh Associates as their newest apprentice intern. Andy has done everything she can to make this happen for herself, but what she didn't count on was her reaction to Patrick Walsh upon meeting him....
"Everything about Patrick was assertive. Staring into his hazel eyes, I immediately knew it wasn't limited to architecture."
I absolutely LOVED Andy's confidence not only in herself as a woman, but in her ability as an architect. The strength of character that she exudes in the way she addresses life and what she wants out of it, is incredibly sexy and I think Patrick just didn't know what to make of it or her when they first meet. Personally I think he was so drawn to her that he just didn't know what to do with himself. Patrick has such an intensity to him which is so alpha in my mind and I immediately thought oh this is going to be good!!!
"His harnessed intensity brought the walls closer and thickened the air. His stare was cool and observant, and I experienced a profound sense he could slough away my layers with one glance.
Once Andy joins the firm and begins working with Patrick on a daily basis, their undeniable draw to each other was apparent to me, unfortunately, it wasn't quite as apparent to our H/h....or was it? What Patrick did know is that Andy's ability as an architect was amazing and he couldn't help but be impressed with her. Meanwhile, Andy is doing her best to stop having all sorts of dirty thoughts about Patrick, because, you know, he's her boss...
The fact that Andy is a strikingly gorgeous woman has not escaped Patrick's notice that's for sure. But what drove him crazy were some of her other characteristics....
"It wasn't enough that her primary mode of communication was eyebrow arching; she needed to add some riddles and obscure references too.
And let's not forget to mention Andy's fascination with wearing knee socks with some great patterns. I found the fact that Patrick was bound and determined to get her out of these socks so he could worship her entire body quite sexy. Adding in that they both like to "play" in the bedroom just makes the sex in this book that much dirtier and fun at the same time....
"As much as I hated to admit it, the facts weren't lying. Patrick gave me the best orgasm of my life. I'd be willing to argue it was the best orgasm known to womankind. If there was a contest for that sort of thing, I'd happily write up any entry."
As much as these two weren't looking for something permanent, they were so right for each other and as time moves in the book and they spend more and more time together, they had to admit what they both wanted and what that would mean for everyone involved; Andy's family was more dysfunctional than Patrick's but on different levels. As I watched their relationship grow, the way Ms. Canterbary wrote their story made me fall more and more in love with these two as a couple. They're bright and witty, incredibly sexy and most importantly the ying to the other's yang.
But can they both admit it to each other? Can Patrick's entire family be on board with Andy being part of their lives permanently both in and out of work? Can their different backgrounds prevent them from finding their HEA or will they be able to build what the perfect HEA looks like for them? Pick up book two in this series and you'll find out. As an added bonus you'll experience a great quirky sexy read too!

So here I sit gobsmacked by how wonderful The Space Between was, and now I have to read the whole series.
Call it a lesson learned. One I’ll still need to learn many times, I’m sure… but so worth it!

Some authors are inconsistent in the quality of their books - not this one. Every character is well rounded and stay's 'true'. They are all thoroughly believable. The hero and heroine are immensely likable, that's not saying the hero didn't behave like a complete chump at times but he made up for it in the end.
The quality of writing is among the best I have read. There is so much depth to these books with some good side stories involving supporting characters. The sex scenes give of smoke they are so hot - and this comes from the emotion/feeling conveyed by the author, how well she develops the relationship between Patrick and Andy and how believable it all is.
I feel like these are friends - the characters seem so 'real' I feel like they must exist somewhere. This, along with book 1, are two of the best books I have read this year
