The Storm in Her Smile (Stories From a Post-Break World) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 269 ratings

In the post-Break world of superpowers, every town has a story, and Mobile, Alabama is no exception.

In Mobile, the waters have finally receded, but the streets run red with blood. For the past few years, the city's been the domain of the Melendez brothers; crime lords, murderers, and would-be kings.

Charity is forgotten. Compassion is a lie. Weakness is death.

Until the day an electric motorcycle rolls into town carrying a lone rider in black. They call her the Queen of Smiles, and she has a job to do.

Stories From a Post-Break World are short tales that take place in the same post-apocalyptic superhero world as See These Bones and the rest of the Murder of Crows trilogy.

This story shows us as the character known as the "Queen of Smiles" finishes up a mercenary contract that takes her to Mobile, Alabama to kill a crime boss. Its short, simple and mostly interesting.

However, it is just a vignette. There is little beyond the story and this tale just gives us a few scenes in the life of our otherwise unnamed main character. We actually get very little information other than the fact that she's a shifter of some kind and her clothing appears to be part of the shift. Honestly, this tale manages to dehumanize her more than she already was after the first 2 books in this universe.

But, its a simple short story, and provides some neat scenes, so I'll give it a low 4 star.

The Queen of Smiles is probably one of the most interesting characters in the author's post-break world. Everyone loves a mystery, after all.

Loved the story, especially how it had a different feel from the main book. It makes it feel like a living, breathing world. I can't wait for more.

I dislike short stories but this one does flesh out an interesting character from the Murder of Crows series. It's up to the author's usual excellent standard.

Fortunately, this is not the end of the story of the Queen of Smile (for me, at least) as I didn't read yet the full novel of Her Majesty. I was keeping it for dessert, after reading the 3 spin-off books of the Murder of Crows. I really wish there will be plenty more about this world, as it seems there is a lot more that could be written about it.
