Hallie Clarke has been through the rumor mill so many times that she barely feels the sting of the lies anymore. With her impenetrable walls steady and in place, she leaves her infamous high school days behind and sets off for University of Michigan, with only her beat up, old guitar for company. Or so she thinks.
It isn’t long before she attracts the attention of her too hot to handle neighbor, Nate Harris. She tries to fight her intense attraction to him, but with his sweet words and chiseled abs, her walls of ice begin to crumble around her. Hallie soon finds herself opening up to Nate, letting him in to her world of music, and sharing secrets she swore she’d take to the grave.
The hot new romance causes more than a few heads to turn on campus, and old rumors begin to surface, threatening to pull them apart. Their connection is strong, but will it be enough to hold them together when the rumors take a dangerous turn?
Or will Hallie be left to fight it all alone?

    I loved this book!
This book is about Hallie, who is finally going off to college after being bullied during he high school years. After a something horrible happens in high school, she just keeps her head down and concentrates on he education so she can get a scholarship to the college she wants to attend. Hallie isn't very close with the sperm donor, her father and he mother would rather hang with the men that come through than to be a loving mother to her daughter.
When she gets to college she meets her new room mate Codie. Hallie isn't very good at friendships with girls or boys but Codie wiggles her way in and they become BFF's. Hallie doens't really know what a BFF does but she is willing to give it a try.
Once they are in their room they meet their neighbors, Nate and Ryan (friends for a long time). Nate falls head over hills for Hallie but Hallie not to sure what to think about that. She hasn't had the best experience with boys but she finally breaks and lets Nate in.
Hallie starts to get bullied again and something horrible happens that causes her to be kicked out of college. Everyone, Nate, her father and the Dean believe the stories so she has to head home. She finds her mother very loving and that's what Hallie needs. After and life threatening accident, Hallie's father finally realizes that his daughter was telling the truth and he steps up to be the father she needs. Will Nate come around and if he does will it be to late? Can't wait for the new book to come out so we can see what happens next.
I know you will enjoy this book as much as I did!!
    Happy reading!!

Wow what a story. Hallie has a past that destroyed her high school years along with absent parents and now she's built an ice wall around her thoughts, her emotions and her heart. She's smart, witty and determined to start over a stronger person as she moves from Iowa to Michigan to go to college where no one knows of her past. She has a spunky roommate Codie, who tries to loosen her up a bit but it's hard.

The first day at college the two girls meet their neighbors Nate and Ryan. Ryan takes to Codie and although there's heavy attraction between Nate and Hallie, they fight the pull until they eventually give in.

Nate feels so much for Hallie and she's slow to open up to him but feels the same as he does until the past comes back to destroy Hallie. Hallie is misunderstood and has been set up and I can't wait to read book 2!!!!!

This was a tough read the story made me so tense and upset I know it happens but reading all the bullying that happened in this book makes me so sad for our youth. It is hard to read such horrible things and how some people choose to accept it and try to ignore it. Where are the teachers and other people should stand up to bullies. Social Media should monitor such horrible things and shut down the bad stuff, free speech is one thing but bullying is never acceptable.
I cannot wait for the possibility of a next book with the way this story ends

This sounds awful, but book was good enough. I know it's not something you might want to hear. I have read tons of contemporary romance books in past few years. And if I had read this earlier, I might have given more stars.. but now.. I liked it, it was good, I read in in one sitting. I will read the next book of the series. So good enough.

This is the first book of 2, which I didn't see in the description. Good for teens and young adults. It could use a lot of editing.

I loved the story line because it kept my interest. It made me want to read faster to see what happens. The only negative thing I could say was I wanted to read more lol. I can't wait to read the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars you have no idea how much I loved this book

Argh! you have no idea how much I loved this book! I could put the damn thing down, I took it to the toilet, the bedroom. I even had to take it with me on the car journey (which I never do) as I had to finish it before going to see a movie I've been wait forever for, otherwise I wouldn't be able to concentrate! Even throughout the movie Hallie and Nate were on my mind!

let's talk about Hallie! She has to deal with a lot of crapola in her life, some of it due to childish bullies that want to make her life hell! her attitude to them... She didn't give a hooha about it! She let them get on with it. but like everyone else, there's only so much one person can take before they break. I connected with Hallie from the first page and I wanted to protect her much like Nate wanted to.
now Nate *Le sigh* hello new book boyfriend material! He's hot, geeky and he's a protector! I love love love when men go all alpha and will do anything to protect their women, it just does something to me! I wanted to punch him a couple of times and tell him to get his head out of his behind!
The ending is totally not what I was expecting but I'm actually happy with ghe way it did. I hope it's maybe a sign that there could possibly be a book 2? Annie? Yes? Please?
well done Annie on another amazing read! one that will be in my heart for a very long time!!! if I could give it more than 5 stars, I would!

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid start to the series!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 31, 2016
This is the first book by Annie Hughes that I've read, and I really enjoyed it.

The book's told mostly from Hallie's POV as she starts college. She's closed off, strong willed, and determined to leave her past behind her. I admit, during the first few chapters, I was torn between wanting to hug and slap her. The way she kept pushing people away irritated the hell out of me, but as her past is revealed, I completely understood her thought process and the need to start afresh.

Codie, her roommate, sees Hallie for who she is and is determined for the two of them to become friends - and her loyalty to Hallie far surpasses first impressions.

These two characters are realistic and elicited real emotion from me. I could imagine myself hanging out with them. It's relateability that I loved about them.

Then there's Nate and his sidekick Ryan. At first the reader is led to believe that these two guys are walking, talking man whores, but they manage to worm their way into Hallie's heart, and that of the reader.

While I enjoyed this book, it's not quite a five star read because some parts of it slip into slight cliche territory - particularly Hallie's character. It seemed that, despite her past, she can do no wrong and only thinks of others. This isn't a bad thing by any means, I just felt sometimes that she was a little too good to be true.

The Sound of You is a solid start to the series, and even though it ends on a cliffhanger, it didn't leave you wanting to rip the author's head off. It's a natural end to this part of the story and felt true to the characters. The book is well paced and never falls flat, and you find yourself rooting for each of the four main characters. I can't wait for book 2. Hurry up Hughes and get it written!

As always this will be spoiler free, wish me luck!

Hallie Clarke is everything I have come to love about Annie's writing.
    BAD. ASS. FEMALES!
The world needs more of them, "May we know them,
    may we be them,
    may we raise them"
I think the quote actually talks about strong women but same difference, right?

Hallie has worked hard at building an ice wall around her heart, keeping everyone out, enter Nate Harris (it's always a boy isn't it 😉) who makes it his mission to try & chip away at that ice. Hot damn that boy is not giving up on what he wants but who will win the battle?
Both driven to get what they want the journey was certainly amusing to this reader, with quite a few laugh out loud moments.

Technically Nate wasn't alone in his mission to crack Hallie, he had her collage roommate Codie & his best friend/roommate Ryan. The boys live across the hall & the 4 form an awkward sort of group getting by on sarcasm, humour & shameless blackmail by the boys to get Hallie to cook for them.

There were some scenes that made my heart literally hurt for Hallie but some I just wanted to shake her & say OPEN YOUR EYES! The past comes back to bite her in the ass a few times so I can't really blame Hallie for being so closed off.  Read it & put yourself in her shoes, not sure I'd have half the spirit she does if I went through those situations.

Annie seeing your writing evolve makes me so proud to share this journey with you! I can't wait for more, I need book 2 NOW!

I don't know how many times I have read this book already. It's one of the stories I just love to revisit.

Annie has created a perfect story. Complicated girl with a past and a hot as sin guy. All set in college. Can it get better? Yes it can!

Ms. Hughes has talent to create a story that grabs your attention, your heart and is not willing to let go until you have felt every single emotion she poured into the book.

    And here is no different.

Hallie is a college girl with a past she is not proud of but at the time she thought it was necessary to act as she did. Where Hallie's mother loved her she was preoccupied with her boyfriends. Dad. Yeah. Issues are only a mild word to use. He wasn't abusive but simply wasn't really there. And college was supposed to be a fresh start where no one knows her. But unfortunately past is a b*** and catches with you when you start being happy. And Hallie started being happy after meeting Nate. Mhm. Yumminess.

Where she starts getting comfortable drama starts. And of course it's caused by a jealous ex of Nate. Queen B is not happy about being dumped and is blaming Hallie and not her shining personality.

We have drama, fun, laughter and so much more.

    Loved it. 5 stars.
