The Stars That Sing (Stories From a Post-Break World) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 236 ratings

In the post-Break world of superpowers, not everyone is lucky enough to be born in the Free States. Some labor under the repressive lash of Steel's regime. Others die young on the war-torn streets of the dirty South. And then there's Old Baltimore, where Lord Legion's thousand Eyes fill the night sky.

Samara and Cornelius James are two children growing up too fast on the streets of Old Baltimore. The only thing they know for certain is that their lives and their deaths are to be used as Lord Legion deems fit.

Escape is impossible. Rebellion is futile. Hope is a fairy tale.

Until the day a stranger is spotted on the city streets, and the world they know starts to shift.

Stories From a Post-Break World are short tales that take place in the same post-apocalyptic superhero world as See These Bones and the rest of the Murder of Crows trilogy.

Chris began as a gleam in someone’s eye, but birth and childhood were quick to follow. He’s been fortunate enough to live in Spain, Germany, and all over the USA, and is busy planning a tour of the distilleries of Scotland.

He currently lives in Nevada with his angelic wife and ever-expanding whisky collection and occasionally ventures outside to peer upwards, mutter to himself about ‘day stars’, and then scurry back into the house.

Chris is the author of multiple fantasy series: The Murder of Crows, The Many Travails of John Smith, The Storm Who Rides, The (Second) Life of Brian, and Stories From a Post-Break World. He regularly shares status updates on his author website..

Very enjoyable short story from the post-break world. Gives a good insight into Lord Baltimore and the Void Singer referenced in the original trilogy.

I don't know for sure if this is the case, but it seems kindle authors are paid for word count. If that's the case, then in order to make a short story "worth it" it has to be marvelous. And this work was excellent.
Technically part of a broader universe, I don't feel you need to read any other books as this felt like a standalone work. Give it a shot, love it for what it is, then jump back into the broader universe.
Finally, the book takes place in a world where the presence of super powers had generally negative consequences. So you can call it a DC or MCU type book, but truthfully it's a character study and all the better for it.

Not only is the style of these books amazing, the content amazing, and the tone but the way that they tie into the original trilogy just BLEW MY MIND! These are amazing stories but the original trilogy is honestly the best super hero series I've ever had the privilege to read!

Loved this addition to the "See These Bones" world. More history, more space, more ache, for the world and for individual characters. And some marvelous body horror as well.

Punch characters out via central casting, give some characters a backstory that isn't shown in depth so it barely serves as plot bait and doesn't develop them at all. Don't go into detail with powers.

All of that can be found here in Chris Tullbane's latest tale. Its a very short, fast read that honestly left me feeling like he either needs to write 6-7 stories of this length and put them into an anthology for his universe, or he needed to develop this into a full story.

Because he does have a story here. Quite a bit in fact, but the format of a short story means we don't see much. Even the climax is from the point of view of a young man who is hiding outside the villain's base as another goes in to end a reign of insanity that's been going on for decades.

Just needed more for me to give this one 4 stars.

Loved it, and love the setting. Well-written and dream-like, poetic and just enjoyable. This short story has so much more to say than the words it contains.

I really liked the 3 short spin-off of the Post-Break World. It was interesting enough that it could have been side stories in the original story.

I'm not a fan of short stories but this makes for an interesting little addition to the Murder of Crows series. It's as good as the author's other stuff but it's too short.
