- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseUnlike the author, I have not had infertility issues myself. I do have family and friends that do fall in the statistics of the 1 in 8.
While reading The Sun Will Rise, I had to take a deep look at myself. Did I say the right things? Have I been supportive? Did I cause more heartache to the already heartbroken couple? Teaching me how to be a comfort to those who are in need.
Sarah Hill is a powerful writer, and her stories will touch your soul. The Sun Will Rise is her 3rd book, and for me, each book is amazing in it's own way. You find yourself completely drawn in. Not only to the characters, but the setting. For me, I can see myself there at the campsite - watching Marissa make pancakes in the dirt under the picnic table.
I highly recommend The Sun Will Rise, it is a wonderful book that allows you to see into the world of a couple in love and how their love helps heal their heart.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book was very well written and shows every emotion that infertility will put a couple through. Sarah Hill doesn't pull any punches about the truth and pain the main characters Jordan and Kolby deal with on a daily basis. The Sun Will Raise brings to light times when family and friends mean to be supportive and caring but in reality, things they say or do can be painful to a couple struggling with infertility.
I also loved the personal stories at the end of the book. Seeing the real-life struggles of couples makes you realize how truly blessed you can be. Great job Sarah Hill keep bringing us your AMAZING stories!

- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseYour heart will warm and break for the lovely couple, Jordan and Kolby, as we follow them along on their struggle with infertility. I was immediately engaged and connected to this couple. Their dialogue was so real and easy to hear in my mind. Jordan wants a child so badly, that it's almost criminal she doesn't have one.
My favorite thing about this book is it doesn't shy away from the hard topics. The situations and conversations that play out are so utterly real that it's hard not to get involved with these characters' lives. Hill has a true talent for writing stories that get under your skin and into your heart. This book needs to be discussed. I know I could talk about it until the end of time. The endless doubt and worry and trying not to get excited was palpable.
Marissa is a delightful child, and I adored her scenes, until I didn't, and you'll see why. Not since Jodi Picoult, who also writes about the real stuff, have I felt so moved and defeated, and to love a book that kills you is remarkable. Well done, Hill.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book was so raw and powerful. It really helps you to see and understand what those who struggle with infertility go though. It pulls you in from the first page all the way to the end of the book.

A story of infertility, heartache, and finding beauty regardless of what happens, The Sun Will Rise makes you feel for its characters so deeply. It’s clear that Sarah Hill poured her heart and soul into this book, and it certainly paid off.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOnce again I was so captivated and drawn in to the book and made it hard to put it down. A subject such as this one is hard enough to even think about and for Sarah to be able to write about her own experiences the way she did, so much respect.

4.0 out of 5 stars Poignant - tugs at the heart strings!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was such a raw and poignant read that was heart breaking at times. The Sun Will Rise is a story about Jordan and Kolby, who want nothing more than to become parents, however they must endure a battle with infertility that leaves them drained, despondent and somewhat broken until an unusual solution seems to present itself - but not without further heartache and difficult decisions being made.
Sarah Hill gently pulls the reader into the story and the world of a couple who continually fight feelings of helplessness as they try to realize their dream of having a child together while watching their friends have children of their own. The author gently guides the reader to understand (no doubt through her first hand experience) how certain seemingly innocent conversations with friends can quickly become upsetting and even condescending around the delicate subject of trying to conceive a child. The ongoing cycle of hope followed by disappointment was tragic, and provided a real insight into how crushing this is for couples trying for a child over a long period of time. This beautiful story has many heart warming scenes to compensate for the sad ones, however there is no denying that Sarah Hill has done a great job of expanding the readers understanding of the cycle of hope and grief in the context of infertility struggles. Love is what pulls this couple through in the end, but no spoilers as to how their future family looks - you will have to read for yourself - highly recommend!

4.0 out of 5 stars A bittersweet and poignant read about infertility
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA bittersweet and poignant read about infertility and the effect it can have. Jordan and Kolby are a normal, American couple trying to have a baby. Sadly, like many, this dream is proving elusive. As their friends around them fall pregnant with ease, the pressure and disappointment grow harder to bear, and Jordan, in particular, feels her heart break with each month’s disappointment.
This may be a hard book for some to read, especially if the premise is painfully close to your own experiences. However, the author deals with this sensitive topic with tact and gentleness. It’s clear she loves her characters and aches at the situation she puts them in. I felt that perhaps the subject was personal to the author, as there was a knowingness and familiarity that exceeded merely doing her research.
It also struck me how unusually wonderful the character of Kolby — Jordan’s husband — was. In my experience, men are not normally this sensitive, understanding, or willing to stick it out for the ride. But that might be just cynicism gained from dealing with unsympathetic and emotionally immature men my whole life.
Jordan and Kolby’s journey is heart-wrenching and sad. Although the book did not end the way I predicted, it was all the stronger for that and ultimately had a brave and loving message.

4.0 out of 5 stars A heartbreaking tale of loss
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe sun will rise tells the story of Jordan and Kolby, a couple who have done everything right but who still can’t get pregnant. It’s a story of infertility but it’s less about the treatment options and more about the perpetual sense of loss and longing that you have to live with when you can’t have a child.
Having never wanted children myself I found it difficult to connect with Jordan. I hasten to add that’s in no way the fault of the author; I talked about this book with my mum and she assured me that much of what the author writes about is true to life. She’s even lived through some of the scenarios that the author describes. Side note - clearly my mum didn’t have infertility issues, but she knows people who have struggled with this issue.
Over time, Jordan and Kolby leant to accept their fate, but they’re repeatedly reminded of the fact that they can’t have children, and they’re thoroughly tested towards the end of the book. I liked the ending, but I won’t spoil it.
Overall, The Sun Will Rise is well written and I imagine if you have or want children then you’ll find it an enjoyable read, although maybe enjoyable is the wrong word. It is heartbreaking after all. Even I shed a tear at the end!

4.0 out of 5 stars Touching, distinctive and personal
Format: KindleVerified Purchase‘If I were in your shoes’… The main thread to this book concerns a couple and their struggle with infertility but, for me, a wider message it illustrates is that you can never truly share someone else’s shoes. Every struggle is so individual and, while there may be similarities with others, how a person feels consumed by their own situation is unique to them.
Jordan and Kolby are desperate but unable to start a family. Their love for each other makes them want to reduce each other’s pain, rather than share their own burden. Their friends, out of kindness, try to help them but are frequently saying or doing the wrong things.
While the book highlights the commonness (1 in 8 statistic) of infertility issues, the most illuminating part for me was the collection of personal accounts from 8 contributors at the end of the book ... each story so different, and each so touching in its own way.
Well done Sarah Hill for even attempting to write such a book, and for sharing so much from painful personal experience.
