Time Tunnel To Londinium Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 30 ratings

David is an ordinary ten year old boy who sometimes gets a bit bored with school work. By a freak chance he ends up travelling backwards in time, and visiting London two thousand years ago.
He makes friends with a Roman boy and is able to use his time tunnel to help the boy out of a difficult situation. This gives him the inspiration to do the best piece of homework his teacher has ever seen.
This book was written for an eight year old with the age group of 8 - 11 (keystage 2) firmly in mind. The first feedback came from my own kids who range from 4 years to 14, and the target demographic definitely enjoyed it and got the most from it.
Several paperback copies of the book have found their way into our local junior school where they are much sought after.

Olli started writing websites for fun and ended up creating a website about his Grandfather Frank Kingdon-Ward who wrote 25 books and innumerable articles in his lifetime.

That website led to a small paid writing commission a 1,200 word article for "The Great Explorers" Robin Hanbury-Tenison.

He began writing a story for his children which morphed into a completely different book from the original concept.

Meanwhile, he wrote and published "Time Tunnel to Londinium, the first in the "Time Tunnel" series, also written for one of his children. These are short stories for children with an equal mix of fun and education, the first two books are set in contemporary London and Roman Londinium, the third, "Time Tunnel at the Seaside" is set in North Devon and features WWII, and the fourth visits Anglo-Saxon England on a school trip in East Anglia.

In 2017 Olli finally published "Children of the Wise Oak" under the author name Oliver J. Tooley (this was to distinguish the older content from the "Time Tunnel" books).

This, and the second in the series, "Women of the Wise Oak" are set in the 1st century BCE and feature history, overlaid with fantasy from a Celtic perspective.

He created Blue Poppy Publishing for this series, and is now publishing books by four other authors as well.

His most recent book series features a cool suave feline detective, Felix Whiter, who works for Animal Intelligence Services, or A.I.S. His boss is a female mouse called M, and there are a host of other characters. It is VERY silly.

Olli lives in North Devon with his family, having moved there from London in 2011, where he presents regular local radio shows featuring unsigned bands and local authors, writes, gets involved in local politics, and sometimes helps his wife care for their kids.

Although this book is aimed at a younger audience, I think anyone could enjoy it. I certainly did. I don’t know very much about what London was like two thousand years ago, but the author helped me to revisit it through the eyes of a ten year old boy. The story itself flowed along effortlessly and kept my attention. There was a sense of adventure that I’m sure children would appreciate. All in all, I found the book to be entertaining while it shared information about the sights, sounds and customs of the past. My thanks go out to Mr. Tooley. Beautiful job!

Although a children's book, I thoroughly enjoyed this. Ollie is obviously a parent as his children's characters are so believable and I loved the time travel. I have enjoyed his adult and junior books and recommend his books to all. If you haven't read any, you are missing out!

Time Tunnel to Londinium by Olli Tooley

I was intrigued about the era involved in the book and eager to see how the author introduced younger readers to the historical aspects of Roman London. I was pleased to find that there were plenty of prompts in this amusing story to encourage younger readers to investigate Roman London in greater depth. The time-travel aspect is very simple, though not exactly explained, but fine for the main character, David, to have other adventures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventure story of time travel to Roman London!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 4, 2024
This book had all the ingredients of a child's adventure story – a child who sets off alone, without parental knowledge or permission, to explore a secret portal to another world. In this case it is Roman London that the time tunnel leads to, and the plucky hero makes a new friend and encounters some scary situations that require quick wits to escape from. He even gets to eat some very odd food. Altogether both the child reader and the adult are entertained and informed, about our history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get kids into history
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 4, 2017
Great book for getting kids into history. I for one know so little of our Roman past. Very digestible and a good length to keep the interest of the young ones whilst giving them a passion for history. History shouldn't be taught, it should be experienced with books like this.
