- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2017Short stories are so fun to read. Strange ones that make you think are even better. The imagery had me seeing the story in my mind. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a little mystery. Well done Mr. James.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2018This short story will grab you and not let go! Everything is not as it seems. In classic E. H. James fashion, I am left wanting more. I give this 4 stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2017Canadian author E.H. James is a prolific writer of short stories – stories hat test the imagination and call forth ghost like thoughts of the dark world about which we know very little. James is part of that conundrum as there is no biographical information on this gifted author – whether male or female, training, experience in the world at large – as though that is meant to be part of the mysteries presented. We learn that James has read and researched in the areas of parapsychology and metaphysics, for the past 40 years.
THE VISITOR’S ROOM is a fourteen page short story that shares a strange day on a psych ward where Amy, a seventeen year old patient is awakened by Charlie, accompanies her roommate Melanie to therapy only to discover that her friend and fellow patient Angela is checking out of the psych ward that day. Bt that is only the first strange event that makes this day unique – Amy meets Mary whom she doesn’t know but Mary insists Amy asked for her – ‘“Amy, you’ve been here almost five months.” “I’ve been here three weeks.” Mary nodded. “I know.” “You’re not making any sense.” “I was the same, but then I saw the truth. We all do eventually, but not all of us are ready when we should be. But, Amy, you are ready. You are. That’s why I’m here. Everyone here is trying to make the transition. The problem is, most of them don’t know it yet.” “Transition?” Again, the sound of water. Dripping. Trickling. “What is that noise?”And that is the final discussion for an event that ends Amy’s questioning…
James writes very well indeed – the atmosphere created in such a short story usually takes a full length novel to capture in the hands of others. Think Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft, Stephen King, Clive Barker and Anne Rice. Watch this author carefully. Grady Harp, November 17
