Life in the south of France is full of ups, downs, twists and turns. It is full of memorable, and sometimes odd characters, both human and animal. This set of stories is divided between tales of St Remy des Cevennes, a market town, of and Morbignan la Crebe, a small village, both located the Languedoc region of France.
The stories set in St Remy focus on a group of expats who call the town home, at least for part of the year. These characters are of many different nationalities and are all both amusing and interesting. The stories of Morbignan are more concerned with the local French citizens and with their cultural and personal peculiarities.
Full of humor and understanding, these stories are a follow-up to the author’s first book, At Home in the Pays d’Oc .
It is impossible to give details about any of the stories without ruining future readers’ experiences. Let me just say that the stories are nearly all wonderfully written, funny, touching, and definitely worth the readers’ time.
"Tales of the Pays d’Oc" has left me in a quandary. Do I buy a house in St Remy and join the Saturday Club or in Morbignan with its vineyards and truffles? Ms. Stoner has written a delightful book, even better than her first. I look forward to more of her writing about the south of France.

Tales from the Pays d’Oc comprises a series of short vignettes of life in a French village, where expats and locals mingle amicably (more or less!)
At first the anecdotes seem unconnected, but as the stories layer upon each other we become familiar with the characters and also the gentle rhythm of Mortignan life.
The characters are a delightful blend of idiosyncracies and eccentricities, making the majority of tales good-naturedly humourous, often with a small twist in the tale (or tail…pets feature here frequently too). We meet ‘Cheeky’ Kiki, the 60-year-old teenager; Simon the expert party delegator; and Visitor, stealing food and hearts alike; among many, many more memorable characters.
Despite the old-fashioned atmosphere of the rural life, the tales are set in contemporary times. This can have startling effect as references to broadband, Breaking Bad and Amazon punctuate the sepia-toned idyll.
I would definitely recommend this collection to anyone looking for a warm, easy read that leaves you feeling like you’ve been sipping beer on bench in the village square, as the sun warms your face and the world passes by.
Saturday, a hot and dusty market day in late August. In the Café de l’Ane the rag-tag band of expats and ne’er-do-wells who comprise the Saturday club are once again assembling for the weekly gossip-fest.
They bustle into their seats, disposing around and under their chairs their carrier bags of cherries and onions, their baskets laden with fromage de chèvre and saucisson, their clandestine and rather greasy paper bags concealing the Vietnamese delicacies they are strictly forbidden to consume in the café.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2018Format: KindleTales from the Pays d’Oc is made up of a collectio of short stories about life in a French village. As you read through each story, you realize they layer up, and connect in ways you aren’t expecting.
The characters are what makes these stories work so well. Some are eccentric, some are humorous and often the stories have a small twist. I really loved each character I was introduced to and I couldn’t wait to learn more.
This is an easy read, that relaxes you and gives you something positive to reflect on. I highly recommend checking it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Relaxing and Highly Enjoyable Read
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is not my normal type of read, but what I read left me pleasantly surprised and very relaxed, reading the entire book from cover to finish in just two sittings. The author takes you on a wonderful journey to the Languedoc region in the South of France, where you are plunged into a series of witty and entertaining short stories of a group of ex-pats living out their lives in this lesser known wine growing region. The stories are engaging, thought-provoking and above all else, funny……. particularly the one about poor old Blackie! Patricia’s brilliant writing style pulls you into the page, forcing you to feel the climate, ambience and café life that the local town of St Remy has to offer. I for one will be buying some ‘saucisson’ when I go to the supermarket this week! I would recommend this book to any one that just wants to simply unwind, and you’ll love how she tackles the issue of local gossips! Great work Patricia 😊

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer genius in every single morsel of these bite size temptations
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseDo you fancy a tipple of laughter? I can thoroughly recommend ‘Tales from the Pays d’Oc’ – what a treat!
Patricia’s Tales from the Pays d’Oc are tasty morsels of France spiced with other cultures. I peeped into the worlds of Morbignan and St Remy les Cevennes via Patricia’s giggling goggles and it appealed to my nosy nature. How I enjoyed the ‘babble of accents’ from: French, Dutch, German, Swedish and English inhabitants. The ‘gossip fest’ tempted me throughout the stories. Amusing and poignant observations are thrown in for good measure.
All the characters are vibrant, and I love the way the style of each story reflects the personalities. Sheer genius in every single morsel of these bite size temptations.
French culture is explored, dissected and presented on a plate. The villagers are stubborn and reluctant to change but sometimes surprise you. There are amusing, everyday incidents, but as you weave in and out of the characters’ lives, you get to meet them several times.
Morsels of Morbignan are ‘tres amusant’. Each story made me declare: ‘Ah, or ‘Je vois’ or ‘oh la la’. The author transported me over the English Channel and made me think in schoolgirl French (minus the accents). Desperate for the denouement of each tale, I burnt a stew, but it was an excuse to open a bottle of French wine. These stories would make a perfect Sunday evening TV series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A carafe of wonderful tales
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOutside my window, it's grey and bleak, but inside my heart is still warm, in the Languedoc region of France.
In the sequel to her first delightful anthology, Patricia Feinberg Stoner takes us to the poetic-sounding market town of St Remy les Cevennes and the village of Morbignan la Crebe.
From the very first story, Tiger Walk, I was hooked, as a cat walked through town, with the 'sun not yet cruel' casting 'a friendly glow over the market ', and introduced us to our motley characters.
And what a colourful, 'rag-tag band'... And what bizarre and wonderful stories they weave.
The chapter headings themselves are a joy: witty, original, fun... 'The man who went four by fourth', 'Of vines and wines and the prospect of babies', 'Boar war's ..
The author has a superb voice, a dry sense of humour that had me laughing aloud, and keen observation, combined with an occasional soupcon of pathos. Two utterly beautiful pieces of writing are: A dog called Useless and The Boy in the Water. Sublime!
I also enjoyed Bond's cartoons.
As an expatriate myself, I recognised the pictures of an odd bunch of non-French fleeing their northern countries - and problems - to never really fit in with their idea of a southern idyll.
Heartily recommended. Encore!
And please excusez-moi for not being able to work out on my Kindle how to insert accents...
