    And he still is, in history and the minds of those who have listened to him. He was also a proto-scientific genius in terms of whomever so can be such with a mastery of Vedantic understanding. And that isn't to say his way of knowing was less than science, but rather where science came from and owes a great deal of respect ("...on the shoulders of giants" as it were). To read any random passage in this book is to gain a glimpse of enlightenment in its many but also unified and elegant aspects. Highly recommended.

    As Ken Wilber writes in the preface to the Inner Directions version of these same Talks, Ramana is "the greatest sage of the 20th century and arguably the greatest spiritual realization of this or any time." If you are interested in the highest spiritual truth, this may be the only book you will ever need. ADDENDUM: If you like these Talks please check out Aham Sphurana: A Glimpse of Self Realisation, available on Amazon in both paperback and kindle formats. Aham Sphurana is similarly a transcription of dialogues between questioners and Bhagavan, recorded in recently found notebooks. Another disciple of Bhagavan, Sri Gajapathi Aiyyer, wrote meticulous notes after days spent with Bhagavan. He is a different author and so a different voice and Bhagavan seems to come alive, providing excellent teachings consistent with the overall teaching. Great care was taken in verifying the authenticity of the notebooks.
    In telling people about this book, the content of which is taken from the notebooks, I've compared it to unexpectedly finding a lost Shakespeare manuscript!

    Ramana Maharshi realized a rare and high state of enlightenment at a young age. His teaching was framed by the experience and requirements of those who sought him out and asked him questions. It is therefore mostly answered in terms of Hindu tradition, but he would sometimes quote from the Bible or Buddhist teaching , to illustrate a point. As a true master he was sometimes humorous, sometimes profoundly insightful and, when appropriate, responded with silence. This book seems to be an accurate account of his teaching years and is therefore a treasure of immeasurable importance to those who value spiritual literature from an impeccable source.
