Tangled Fortunes (SimCavalier Book Three) (The SimCavalier series 3) Kindle Edition
London, 2046. A nuclear explosion rocks the world. The SimCavalier knows exactly how it happened, and that the terrorist threat of more destruction is deadly serious. Intelligence from a coalition of cyber security leaders and a dead body floating out to sea from a nuclear facility confirm her worst fears - a familiar cybercrime syndicate is behind it all.
Cameron is desperate to protect her family and joins forces with a group of undercover hackers to fight against a rogue militia and a global cybercriminal network. Her trusted lieutenant, Ross, reassumes his old criminal identity, but is doxed by a grey hat hacker who could bring the whole delicate operation crashing down.
While the international coalition picks off the cybercriminals one by one, the terrorist militia counts down to their next attack. The pressure is on, and the stakes are as high as they can get.
"Stepping up a gear to reveal a worldwide network of strong characters on both sides."
”A nice blend of sci-fi and thriller genres. Highly recommended reading.”
The tangled web spread across the globe is believable because the villains behind it are believable, fallible and very human.”

About the author

Kate writes novels and short stories that range from humorous sci-fi to dystopian visions, cybercrime and urban horror, and also serious non-fiction (as Kate R Baucherel).
She has been embedded in sci-fi since childhood, from her first glimpse of the Daleks from behind the sofa aged five through listening to the BBC Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy broadcasts and being blown away by the first scenes of Star Wars on its original release. As a child she wrote her own Dr Who and Star Wars stories and occasional scripts for friends to act out in the park. She progressed to reading her dad’s collection of Wyndham, Bradbury, Clarke, Heinlein and Asimov before discovering Iain Banks, David Brin, Terry Pratchett and so much more. Kate works with emerging technologies and future visions and sometimes it's hard to separate the day job from fiction!

- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2022Plot lines from the previous two books are even more intertwined here, and the solid team isn't as invulnerable as it had seemed. Baucherel's characters are complex, messy individuals.

Loved the crypto and blockchain setting.
Baucherel is a brilliant storyteller. I love reading her stories. Looking forward to more to come.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2020This is the third volume in the series of adventures of a cybersecurity firm in London in the near future. The technology is spot-on (which continues to delight me as someone who is in the field). The characters are well drawn and the team of researchers operates as a well-oiled machine. This time around they have to find a collection of cyber criminals, one of who assumes four different avatars to elude the authorities -- just barely. You probably should read the earlier volumes to get the most out of this one. It is a nice blend of sci-fi and thriller genres too. Highly recommended reading.

SImCavalier to the rescue again. Keeps up the high standard and technical accuracy of the previous books.

5.0 out of 5 stars fallible humanity in all its shades of grey
It had been a while since I read the first two books in the series, and with such a complex web of intrigue and so many disparate characters it could have been difficult to pick up so many the threads of narrative. It is a testament to the author that within a few pages I felt back home in the simcavilier's near future world.
Mz Baucheral has a way of taking complex emerging technology and projecting it forwards to the every day, of making it understandable without over complex explanations getting in the way of the story. This sets a vision of the near future that just feels right and real. So disbelieve never needs to be put on one side. This is a very possible future, both bright and dark.
At its heart however, this book, as with the rest of the series, is just good storytelling. The characters old and new have real humanity in their fallibility, the villains are not just villainous anymore than the heroes are just white knights. The tangled web spread across the globe is believable because the villains behind it are believable, fallible and very human. While the simCalivers team with all its own fallibility and complicated relationships with each other is equally believable.
The plot while outlandish in some degree never feels outlandish while your in the moment, which is a fine art for any writer to achieve.
in all its a delight and I look forward to the next in the series, and all those threads untangled in this one and left tantalisingly hanging before us

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeping up the good work
I had the luxury of reading all three books for the first time within a short interval.
Not only does Kate keep developing characters that I find interesting and want to know better, but the world is unfolding in a consistent and logical way. The bonus for meis that I can now see recognisable locations that help bring her futures to life for me in a more personal way that before.
I have also discovered through Kate, the Harvey Duckman series of short stories. While I find her Finch stories less to my taste, she has exposed me to an amazing array of talent writing now in the north of England.
