Cruel Promise: A Titan Falls Prequel Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,608 ratings

"You shouldn't have put yourself back on my radar, princess..."

He's right. I shouldn’t have kept watching.

I was only 16, but every time I was around my best friend’s older brother, I lost control of my senses.

Tempest Callahan.

Sea glass eyes. Sculpted, marble body. And a crooked, ruthless grin.

Then I witnessed something I shouldn’t have.

I stood frozen in place instead of running for my life.

Four years without him should have cured me, but when he sneaks up on me at my freshman orientation, I’m done for.

Again.

I can’t resist his touch or how he makes me feel.

Then his loyalty is tested, and he’s forced to make a choice that could cost us both everything. Stupidly, I thought he'd make the right one.

I knew he was a bad guy. I saw it with my own eyes.

But I never believed how twisted he’d become.

--

Cruel Promise's lush, gothic scenes and deliciously dark hero can be enjoyed as a standalone.

First off this book deals with darker themes but at its heart its a story of a guy who would/does anything for the girl he's in love with( even if he doesn't know that he's in love with said girl at the beginning but its obvious to the reader!). Tempest is both the villain and the hero in the story. His back story isn't pretty. His father sells him off to Miguel Rossi to pay a debt. Before that he's was at some elite boarding school Briarcliff with a sordid secret society that got blown apart( hint read Rival, Virtue, Fiend and Reign by Ketley Allison but I didn't know about them prior to reading Tempest, so it can be read as a standalone because you get the back story.). Miguel trains Tempest to be a killer, etc. Tempest is already a pretty smart guy. Ardyn is Tempest's little sister Clover best friend. Ardyn was kidnapped at 10 yrs old by three bad guys thus she's dealing with some trauma and has bodyguards. Her other best friend Mila convinces her to seek out to an art auction. Clover has her brother Tempest pick up Ardyn and Mila. Ardyn is shy but she's had a crush on Tempest since they were kids. Mila also has a thing for Tempest but he's not interested. His car is only a two seater. He has Ardyn sit in the middle area with Mila in the passenger seat. Ardyn sneeks out without changing into her black evening gown loaned to her by Mila. Needless to say she has to change in the car on the way to the art show. Tempest is a gentleman as she changes but sparks fly between the two. He drops them off at the art show/art auction but he thinks something not right. After a run in with a limo as he's trying to pull out into traffic, he knows he has to get the girls out of there. Clover meets up with Ardyn and Mila inside they go to the basement for the auction. Ardyn has a mild panic attack and has to go to the bathroom. She gets lost and witnesses a murder which once she thought someone saw her she runs. Tempest finds Ardyn. She tells him what she saw or thinks she saw( remember she's still dealing with trauma from her kidnapping), he pushes her out of the danger in the building telling her to meet up with the girls he's ordered them a car. Ardyn stumbles outside panicking from what she witnessed. She finds Clover who's with Mila. Mila has a flask and urges Ardyn to take a drink. The car shows up taking the girls away but a car accident happens. Mila dies in the accident. Ardyn retreats into her 10 yr old self as a result. Clover tries to keep her friend in the present. Then the story jumps ahead two years to Titan Falls University where Tempest a fifth year student is helping his little sister Clover move into her dorm room for freshmen year. Ardyn arrives as he's about to leave. He's livid to see Ardyn again. He blames her for his sister getting hurt, etc. He wants her gone. Clover tells him no she's staying as does Ardyn. Ardyn ends up taking a business class taught by a Professor Rossi who's TA is none other than Tempest. Rossi wants to know if she remembers anything from the night of the accident. Tempest says she doesn't. But Ardyn she there to find the truth of who killed her friend Mila. After the accident Ardyn's parents put her into an mental institution. She's been fighting for control since that night. Tempest does everything to get her to leave school. Her being their is risking everything he's done to protect Clover and Ardyn. But in the end he can't fight his attraction to her anymore than she can. Some crazy stuff happens ( I won't spoil that, its too worth the read to find out!). In the end the villain can be the hero who risked everything for the girl he always loved but never figured it out until he almost loses her but a good friend points out why they have always loved each other. Rio is that friend. Ardyn gets the truth. She also realizes no matter what she loves Tempest. She loves the villain. This book blew me away. I loved every twist and turn. This is the first book I've read by Ketley Allison and I loved it!! I plan on going back to read other books she's written especially the Briarcliff ones I mentioned above. Apparently the start of Tempest's story but like I said above you don't have to read them to understand this book. I can't wait for Clover's story to unfold with Hunter or maybe Rio. Well we wait for that book. I highly suggest you read this one. Its worth it. So worth it. Enjoy!

So, this book was dark and made me think a lot. I liked that the main male and female characters were both jaded and had trauma, but they could still see the good in each other.

Tempest was a loner who always put up walls to protect himself. He hurt others before they could hurt him. But he still loved his sister, and that kept the good in him alive.

Ardyn was a child who went through two traumatic events that made her lose herself and her sense of safety and control. But she kept pushing forward because she loved her best friend and wanted to find herself again.

These two are like oil and water. Tempest hates that he's drawn to Ardyn and blames her for his problems. Ardyn has been interested in Tempest since they were kids. Now that she's back, he has to face the choices he made and hope Ardyn doesn't remember the last night she saw him.

I read this book last instead of first. I always kind of wondered about Ardyn and Tempest’s story but didn’t realize there was a prequel. Too bad, it was fantastic and really would have helped me understand the other books quicker but it all worked out. All the characters are extremely well fleshed (pardon the pun) out and stay true throughout all the books. Obviously, the story unfolds seamlessly as well and carries the reader along on a sometimes violent, frequently sexy and always wild river of emotions. Read sequentially, and back to back! Just 5!

    Do I Recommend: unsure

First of all, I want to say this book is different than anything I’ve read before, so I give it definite props on that front. This a dark college romance with some mafia and witchcraft thrown in and a sprinkle of cult. That being said, a part of me wishes the story would have leaned a little bit more into the witchy/ ghost aspect, which I feel like it could have done without fully transitioning to a paranormal romance.

I’m addition to the story being unique, I also really liked Ardyn and Tempest’s characters. I enjoyed seeing Ardyn grow from all the trauma in her past and watching Tempest realize there was always someone truly seeing him. The story was interesting, but felt like it dragged at times. Additionally, I felt like the pacing of what we’re shown of their relationship was a little off resulting in the end feeling very abrupt. They didn’t truly get together until the last 15 minutes of the book and that made it feel like their story wasn’t complete. Given how the story was going toward the end, I thought there was going to be another book about the two of them, but then the story wrapped up all of a sudden. It also caused the transition from the hardened Tempest we’d seen pretty much the whole time to the version who is soft for Ardyn at the end to feel disingenuous in my opinion. Almost like he was a robot flipping a switch. I also feel like Ardyn making all of the big discoveries in the last 10-15 percent of the book were just quickly swept away by the explanation of “oh, I know he’s bad but I love him”, which isn’t a problem in and of itself, but it just moved too quickly from point A to point B to feel reasonable. Ultimately, I guess I wish we could have gotten a chance to really see their relationship grow whereas this felt like an unsatisfying end because, just like so many romance movies, it essentially ends immediately after the kiss sealing their relationship. There wasn’t even an epilogue about their future. I’m hoping the next book, which is supposed to be about Clover, and (I’m guessing) Rio, will give us more of Tempest and Ardyn’s relationship. I also hope the next book will continue with the storyline but given the description of the first book, I’m not holding my breath.

Finally, while there’s a fair number of spicy scenes, I just didn’t really feel that connection between the two main characters in the majority, especially given the unsettling context one of them occurs in. Additionally, I’ve read several stories when the MMC craves the blood/pain of the FMC and wants to combine that pain and pleasure, but in this story, it just felt more about Tempest taking what he wanted rather than doing it for her in any capacity, which further reduced the connection I felt. At times it just seemed like a delusional, love-obsessed girl allowing the bad guy to use her because it meant feeling like she was getting what she wanted even when she usually wasn’t.

This story acts as a bridge between the earlier series and the newer Titan Falls series. It’s been a while since I read the earlier ones but you can enjoy the story without having read them.

Titan Falls is an area with a dark history - it only makes sense that the students who attend the university there have equally dark pasts. Ardyn and Tempest are no exception. This is a best friend’s older brother/bully romance. There’s a lot of potential triggers so take the warnings seriously. Despite that, the read is worth it.

Great story. I really liked his broken character. I'm curious about Rio overall. He was a mystery. Also I'm curious about Miguel. Will he have a book? I thought there could be more character dev on every front but I guess it's a thing of mystery. I'm not a fan of Clover
She was very snarky and cruel at times.

This book was a mix between a mob book, a secret society book and the supernatural. I haven’t read anything quite like this before and it was great!

Loved the chemistry between Tempest and Arden - both if these characters are so unbalanced and just what the other needs.

I haven’t read the Briercliff series but I will definitely be getting to it.

This book was really good. It was really dark, and I loved every second of it!!

some parts of the book were really difficult to listen to, I felt really sorry for Arden at times because of what she went through.
Tempest is a massive alpha hole, but we all love a bad boy like this who proudly waves his red flags for all to see!!

The story was quite gripping and had me hooked from the beginning. The world building was good, and I liked all of the different characters.

Im looking forward to reading more books set in this world.
