A Temporary Situation: An employee/boss gay romantic comedy (Tristan and Dom 1) Kindle Edition
Disaster strikes when Dominic finds himself having to work in close proximity as Tristan's P.A. The man is infuriatingly unflappable, infuriatingly good-humored, and infuriatingly unorthodox. In short, just infuriating. A late-night rescue leading to a drunken pass only complicates matters further, especially with the discovery that Tristan is both straight and engaged.
Hatred turns to tolerance, tolerance to friendship, and friendship to mutual passion. One thing's for sure, if Tristan sets his sights on Dominic, there's no way Dominic has the necessary armor or willpower to keep a force of nature like Tristan at bay for long, no matter how unprofessional a relationship with the boss might be. He may just have to revise everything he previously thought and believed in for a chance at love.

About the author

H.L Day grew up in the North of England. As a child she was an avid reader, spending lots of time at the local library or escaping into the imaginary worlds created by the books she read. Her grandmother first introduced her to the genre of romance novels, as a teenager, and all the steamy sex they entailed. Naughty Grandma!
One day, H.L Day stumbled upon the world of m/m romance. She remained content to read other people’s books for a while, before deciding to give it a go herself.
Now, she’s a teacher by day and a writer by night. Actually, that’s not quite true—she’s a teacher by day, procrastinates about writing at night and writes in the school holidays, when she’s not continuing to procrastinate. After all, there’s books to read, places to go, people to see, exercise at the gym to do, films to watch. So many things to do—so few hours to do it in. Every now and again, she musters enough self-discipline to actually get some words onto paper—sometimes they even make sense and are in the right order.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2018Dominic and Tristan's story is funny, sweet, heartbreaking, and in the end, lovely. Dominic thinks that the CEO, Tristan, is self-serving and egotistical as much as he is beautiful. When an emergency has Dominic reassigned to Tristan, he isn't willing to play nice, especially with his underlying attraction to his new boss.
Between Dominic and his attraction to his boss, his boss setting him on a date with a man who's a player, and Tristan being engaged to a model, their timing is never quite right. When it is, Dominic doesn't truly believe that he and Tristan could have a long, loving relationship.
I loved how in-depth this story was. Getting to know both men and seeing their relationship develop was delightful and I was sad to see it end. It was a wonderful read that I highly recommend!!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2022A Temporary Situation is a fun, lighthearted office romance. While this title is part of a two-book series, it definitely works as a standalone or read out of order.
Romantic comedies are fickle things as one’s brand of humor is fairly unique, but I felt this one was very light without any of the mundane or overblown comedy that can sometimes grow old by the end of a book. I really liked that that A Temporary Situation is the very opposite of what I’d expect from a workplace and boss-employee romance. Tristan was so unlike the typical CEO portrayed in contemporary romances and it was a breath of fresh air…even if he left me scratching my head at times. Ultimately, I loved his quirkiness and unruly behavior. I also really enjoyed how open he was with this sexuality and feelings. All in all, Tristan is definitely one of those characters who left me smiling.
I found Dominic similarly likeable. He had a nice steadfastness that complimented Tristan’s personality well. Additionally, I really liked how the reader gets more of Dominic’s real thoughts and personality as the book and his relationship with Tristan progressed.
While there were some elements in A Temporary Situation I thought a little too easy and underdeveloped, specifically in the realm of Tristan’s easy acceptance for his burgeoning feelings for Dominic, this audiobook routinely left me in a good mood and had me smiling throughout. The narration reflected the writing style’s bright and breezy tone, making this an easy and fun listening experience. If you are looking for something lighthearted to listen to while you pass your day or drive away, I’d definitely recommend A Temporary Situation.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2017I've read a number of boss/PA themed books and this one is top-notch. I absolutely adored Dominic (the PA) and his snarky sense of humor. I can't count how many times I chuckled throughout the story. The boss, Tristan, is a bit of an oddball but that just makes things more interesting and fun. Stories filled with angst and heavy emotional issues are great but I really appreciate books like this one that are on the light side but just as riveting. Any time that I find myself eagerly looking forward to what happens next in the story and I willingly give up sleep time to read more, I know I've found a treasure. This one is a true gem which I highly recommend. Hope you try it!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2017Unfortunately, unlike other readers, I found this book a disappointment. There are big spoilers in this review. You've been warned:
The story is written strictly from Dominic’s POV - first person. At first I didn’t mind, but as the story progressed, I really wanted other POV’s. Dominic begins as, and continues to be, a – well, let me just say it - he’s a jerk. The author gives Dominic a weak reason to dislike his boss/company CEO, Tristan Maxwell. So what if Tristan gave an interview where he refers to his employees as minions doing his bidding? Well, sure, a reasonable person could resent that. I certainly wouldn’t like to be described as a minion. But when Dominic goes to work for Tristan as his PA, and the interview is proven wrong in all respects from day one, Dominic still persists in trying, and saying, he dislikes Tristan. Yet, here's Tristan insisting on Dominic addressing him by his first name (which a nasty employer wouldn't do); bringing Dominic coffee in the morning (which no employer in the world, or OK, in my experience, would do), and other acts of kindness. Tristan treats Dominic, and everyone else, with respect. Dominic can *see* that Tristan’s a good employer. By now, a reasonable person might ask: “Oh, by the way Tristan, can I ask a question about that interview you gave..?” But this doesn’t happen. And that's just all wrong, because Dominic’s hissy attitude over that interview drags out for a long, unbelievable length of time. It’s a dreaded “Big Misunderstanding” to keep Dominic from liking Tristan too much, too soon. But it’s a silly
and unbelievable misunderstanding, as misunderstandings go.
But then there’s a *second* “Big Misunderstanding” when Tristian shows his attraction to Dominic. Let’s make that his love – a really sweet, adoring love. And Dominic STILL acts like a jerk. OK, I can understand, partly: from straight to not straight is a big step, and Dominic’s rightly wary that Tristan may break his heart by going back to a woman. Dominic is afraid this is all an experiment to Tristan. That's reasonable, but then the author throws Tristan’s former fiancée, a one-note b*tch, into Dominic’s face, to drive home that Tristan (may) want children. (Like, surrogacy and adoption don’t exist?) And Dominic just RUNS AWAY. He doesn’t talk to Tristan! Some emotional wariness is totally legitimate, but completely shutting himself off, not answering his phone, not talking to Tristan even though they’ve been together for a few weeks now? That's even more unbelievable than the first misunderstanding! Who behaves like this? I know it’s just a romance novel, but real people wouldn’t act like that. Especially not in these days of the accusatory, hit-send-before-you-think, texting generation. Who shuts off and leaves somebody without at least some half-baked excuse or attempt at justification? But then, if the author allowed the two men to TALK, they wouldn't have been kept apart juuuust that bit longer. Ugh!
An M/M romance, just like an F/M romance, can be overwhelmed by sexy scenes at the expense of emotional connection and character development. But I have a complaint that in this story, there’s almost no 'scenery.' Tristan's first time with Dominic is described, but after that, it’s just Dominic telling the reader there was a hot encounter or two, along with some start/stop teases thrown in. I’m not looking for excess, but, given that I wanted emotional and character growth from Dominic - and that wasn't happening... and I still wanted Tristan’s POV – and that wasn't happening – I would have happily settled for more, ya know, woo-hoo. But there isn't any.
Oddly, though the story is apparently set in London, and the author is English, it didn’t have much of a Great Britain-ish-presence. A couple of “bloodys” are said, there's a reference to the "tube," and I think a “whilst” may have popped up, but frankly this story could have been set in Any Big City, Anywhere.
So I've spouted off about what I *didn’t* like -- what did I like about this story? Well, there was the counter-balance of sweet Tristan to take away the bad taste of Dominic. Tristan is adorable. He’s warm, he’s cute, he’s funny, he's the nicest boss … But I wanted to be in his head, not just Dominic’s. And the author is a good writer, her writing is descriptive enough to create Tristan and some cool subcharacters, b those dreaded Big Misunderstandings … grr. Quick, back to likes: Tristan is a unique creation and the subcharacters, with the exception of the one-note fiancée, have a “real” feel. The flow of the plot, even if I didn’t agree with some of the plot elements, was quite OK, at least until the breakup, when the story stagnates. Sure, the reconciliation is fine - of course I like that they do get back together. But it’s frustrating that the reason they broke up is due to Dominic's determination not to have one simple conversation. Which doesn't take place until Dominic's sister too cutely/conveniently takes the initiative and contacts Tristan. Contact that should have been Dominic's doing - with extra groveling!
While there are things I liked about the story, the silliness of the two Big Misunderstandings and Dominic’s insensibility toward Tristan and his feelings, outweighed what I liked.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely and Funny x
When I first started this I was only going to give it four stars...but oh boy Tristan just won me over big time.....This author is new to me and I can't even remember how I came across this book but I'm so glad I did....This is a really funny book....Tristan is just amazing....To say he's a CEO of his own company but how he acts he's almost childlike....or like Dom calls him a puppy....He's always eating...has no qualms about being with a man even though he's engaged to a woman at the start...He's afraid of spiders and lets Dom know......He doesn't let Dom down...In fact it's Dom and Tristan's ex who do the letting down...although his ex was just being petty...I love these two....There isn't too many sex scenes just lots of banter between them...It really is an amazing book and just a pity it's not available in paperback..Will definitely look up more from this author x

5.0 out of 5 stars Adorable! I loved it!
I just loved this book! After several months and many other books I'm still thinking about it. It was cute, sweet, funny and the characters were adorable! Meanwhile I have read all the other books by this author and they were also very, very good but this one is my favorite and absolutely perfect and I didn't want it to end!
Dominic was so relatable, a little insecure, but no pushover. Loved his snarky comments! He was completely clueless at times, especially when it came to Tristan, but in a totally cute way. He never came across as stupid or mean. And Tristan was such a cheerful and positive person, I liked him from the start. Also loved that he didn't seem to be bothered at all when finding himself attracted to a guy when previously he had only been with women. His attitude was just great!
Some readers thought that the book isn't terribly realistic when it comes to the storyline. Personally, I didn't get that feeling at all. I mean , which romance story could actually happen in real life exactly the way it was written in a book? None. Most real-life stories would make for a pretty boring book. And who wants to read that? I can suspend a little disbelief in order to enjoy an otherwise fantastic read. And on an emotional level this story got everything right!
I could have happily kept on reading for another 200 pages, laughing and swooning and fervently hoping for these guys to get their HEA, that's how much I loved the writing, the story, the characters, everything! Such a feel-good, funny and cute book! So happy I found this author. She's on my auto-buy list now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read
A hot boss and a cute PA, what a combination , it always pleases me. Dominic is definitely cute but he has misconceptions that have biased his feelings. Tristen, the boss, is at times jovial and friendly and sometimes kind of goofy, but he is a total sweetheart. These two, working together, prove to be a riot, it sure gives us a fun but sometimes angsty read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved this book...
I'm so glad I took a chance on this book. I usually stick to books in KU but someone in the M/M Book Rec Group absolutely raved about this new author. There is so much banter and amusing characters, I'm besotted with Tristan, he's just so bloody adorable. I did find that Dom became frustratingly stubborn towards Tristan and I kinda wanted to kick him up the bum. This book is so sweet n sexy, I read through the night, waking my hubby up with my outbursts of laughter (ooops)
This is definitely a book I would recommend. I think the author may have a new stalker...

4.0 out of 5 stars Unterhaltsam
Nette Geschichte, mit einem recht sarkastischen Protagonisten, der letztendlich aber doch sein Match fand. Danke für ein paar unterhaltsame Stunden. Hat Spass gemacht zu lesen.
