Temptations of a Duke's Daughter : A Mystery Regency Romance (The Duchess's Investigative Society Book 2) Kindle Edition
Solving a murder is dangerous business. So is falling in love…
Chastity, daughter of the Duke of Daventry, will not stand idly by while her sister is suspected of murder. Since no one wants to help, she’ll take matters into her own hands. The plan? Simple. She’ll disguise herself as a servant and investigate. But when her ruse leads her to the enigmatic Lord Kendall, Chastity soon realizes nothing in her life will ever be simple again…
As much as Valentine would like to ignore the scheming beauty who claims to be a servant, he simply can’t. He needs her. Bringing his footman’s killer to justice would be impossible without her, because the vivacious Chastity can do what he can’t—talk to people and gain their trust. So, he’ll accept the chaos she brings into his life. Accepting her into his heart, however, is another matter entirely…
Fortunately for Chastity and Valentine, intrigue has a way of putting lovers on the path to happily ever after. But first, they’ve got a killer to catch…

About the author
USA TODAY Bestselling Author Samantha Holt is known for fun, witty, and usually steamy historical romances. She's been a full-time writer for longer than she ever thought possible having originally trained as a nurse and an archaeologist. She's a champion napper, owner of too many animals, mum to twins, and lives in a small village near the very middle of England.
She's usually writing (or napping) but when she's not, Samantha is plotting (books of course!) with her husband, drinking coffee, climbing hills that are far too high for her fitness levels or visiting stately homes and pretending she's posh.

If you're not sure where to start, why not try:

▶ There Are Plenty More Dukes in the Sea (The Inheritance Clause #1) is a fun, steamy read focused on the Templeton family as they fight to save their inheritance.
▶ Wake Me With a Kiss is a sweet, fairytale romance. Twists on Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella are also available if you love a clean, fun read.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2024I enjoyed reading this book.
Chasity & Valentine were wonderful characters.
The villain part was too short, but didn't take away from the story.
I am looking forward to reading the rest book in this series.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2021Can they let the past go ...
It has been a while since I have read this author, the usual too many books to read and not time enough. Why I decided to not let this upcoming pass by me without reading it.
And I am glad I did it.
It is much different from the novellas I last read, first it is a full length story, second it is with more mature characters.
Chastity thought she married for love, but what a sixteen year old truly knows about love. She soon discovered only her breeding, beauty were an asset in her husband’s eyes.
Left widowed rather young, she now enjoys her single status and has no plan to marry again an put her self respect under someone else thumb. Plus she is quite proud of the work she does for their investigation society, as she is not one to sit idly.
Valentine is quite the recluse, he has forsaken society a long time ago, unable to forgive the gossip mongers their cruel hearsay and what it pushed his father to do. He is a simple man of simple needs and is back in the city only because he can’t refuse a Duke’s invite.
They meet, well they clash upon their first encounter. On the same night, Valentine’s nephew is found dead, a supposed suicide and the blame points toward Chastity’s half sister.
To restaure her sister’s reputation, Chastity sees not other way than instigating it under a maid’s disguise.
This was a fun read, with a lady not afraid of hard work and a grumbling Earl who is more bark than bite. Their chemistry scorches the pages, yet their past still stand between them, between her bad marriage and his secrets, they are oft at loss about what they feel and how to act about.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2021Loved the book and Chastity and Valentines story. When a young footman is found hung at the stables on the Dukes property it is assumed he committed suicide. But when they depict the illegitimate daughter of the Duke (Eleanor) not in a good nature with the dead footman, Chastity decides to investigate who actually killed the young man. He was the footman of the recluse Earl but what no one knows is he was also the Earls nephew. She decides to get a job as a maid in his household.
When she actually runs into the reclusive Earl she is stunned to find out he is the same man she ran into during her sisters Ball and the knight the footman was killed.
Valentine realizes it’s a mistake but he wants to know who killed his nephew so he concedes to have Chastity stay and see what she can find out. What both did not realize is the attraction between them. Her second chance at love and his first.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2024Investigation dragged and incomplete. End villains' story was abbreviated. Lies and shame delay movement forward. Contrast rich vs working poor.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2022The hero and heroine are enjoyable and their interplay is fun to observe. The murder plot and investigation by the heroine was unique, but it would have been better if she actually employed some investigative techniques.
The hero’s secret set him in a little bit of a bad light, as he kept his living nephew at arms length to protect his dead sister’s memory. And the villain and his motive turns out to be a let down.
But what the mystery plot lacks in development, the romance execution makes up for it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2023Chastity is trying to find her sister, Eleanor. She should be enjoying their youngest sister, Cassie and Luke's engagement ball. When she reenters the ballroom, she runs into a wall, no, not a wall, a man. When he turns to leave without an apology, Chastity is livid! He is not only rude, he has also ruined her new pair of slippers by stepping on her toes! While debating whether he owed her an apology, there was a scream. What is going on? She immediately goes to find out what the problem is, and her nemesis is right behind her. When they get to the stables, they discover his footman has hung himself! Only unknown to her, he is more than just a footman to her mysterious gentleman. Who is this man? Why is he so angry about his footman's death? How will Chastity solve this problem withoutgettingherselfintrouble? Did the footman, Julian, really hang himself? Read this great story by Samantha Holt to find out.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2021A great story that grabbed me from the first page and kept me intrigued until the end!
The Investigative Society was at it again, but this time with a murder close to home! At her sister's wedding ball, Chastity had first had her feet trod on by a rude, hautey man, then, a footman was found dead with a note about a "lost love." A drawing in the paper the next day implicated that her sister was that woman!
That rude man was the Earl of Kendall and it was his footman who had died. But the young man was actually more than that and when he found Chastity trying to investigate, they came to an agreement.
Suspense, a building attraction and wonderful characters, have me only wanting more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another brilliantly enchanting story in the series
This is another brilliantly written, and enchanting story that continues a great series. This steamy at times plot is full of wonderful characters, and a suspense story while also having a fearful romantic journey, that has a happy ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The only way to get rid of Temptation is to yield to it." - Oscar Wilde
There is no greater satisfaction than reading a wonderful novel that is worth your while. It engages all your senses. I liken it to secretly enjoying a decadent piece of chocolate.
Chastity and Valentine, the Earl of Kendall are our inspiring protagonists. An unintended meeting at a ball see them encounter their first 'skirmish' out of many. Chastity is a widow of 10 years, and at 30 is the eldest daughter of a Duke. Her marriage left a bitter taste in her mouth, so she resolved not to repeat it. Valentine blamed society's arbitrary frivolities for the deaths of his sister and father and became a recluse.
A murder committed at the ball unites Chastity and Valentine to uncover the identity of the real murderer. Thrown together at close range, they soon realise they have much more in common than not. Soon, their strong attraction for each other, burning brighter than 1,000 suns bond them together stronger than gorilla glue. From there, there's really only one outcome for our dashing hero and his beloved heroine - a HEA.
Resistance is futile with this kind of temptation. Faced with a swoon-worthy Hero, I wouldn't resist either, but I will happily wave my white flag of surrender. Won't you?
A beautifully crafted prose engages the reader from the get-go. Will read more from this author. I highly recommend this to all Romantics in the Kindle world. This is my opinion. Yours may vary.

2.0 out of 5 stars Americanisms spoil this story
Surely Miss Holt is aware that we have never called anyone involved in law enforcement a Sheriff in England not in regency times and not now. Why do American authors spoil their books for UK readers by persisting in the use of Americanisms. Please note we do not eat buscuits for breakfast or call streets blocks we do not have drapes we have curtains and its nevet fall but autumn. Its annoying and disappointing to read these words in this otherwise excellent authors work.
